    Hey Steve! I hope you'll ready this. Love the videos you post. Excellent break down of some of my favourite throws. You have given me a great understanding of many of the finer details. Currently reading your book on Judo Winning on the Mats. Thank You for all the excellent work

      Glad you like the book and our channel! I'm working with a publisher on a new Judo book hopefully coming out later this year. Thank you for your comment.

    Can the technique for Ura Nage be similar to preforming a barbell power clean? I feel like when you are getting your legs/hips low, you use your hips to "buck" the opponent off the ground. Would this logic be correct?

      welcomematstevescott sure Will do.. I always try out your stuff in my practice and it all seems to work pretty fine... Have you made a detailed video about osotogari .... If you have please make it its the most. Basic but the hardest throw for me to do especially in randori when the opponent is moving... So far I've only. Learned to properly counter osotogari... Can't do it in matches.... If you'll do it that'll be a great help... Love your work keep it up sir...

      O Soto Gari is one of the most basic throws we use, yet has so many applications and variations that it's really a move that one can never stop studying and trying to master. Check on our playlist that it titled Ashi Waza Leg Sweeps and Leg Throws (or something like that) and we have a fair amount of O Soto Gari videos there. Keep watching as well as we have an O Soto Gari video scheduled for viewing on Nov. 15. It's a good one that one of my best athletes used with good success in judo career. He picked it up while living in Japan and brought it home to us. Also look at our videos with the keyword "cross body" as we have some O Soto Gari from a cross body attack angle on our channel. Glad our channel is helpful to you. Keep watching and we appreciate you being there.

    I sometimes see judokas do kosoto style suplex when they get the underhook on the other side of the throw. Is there much technical difference between the two setup positions?

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know what you are talking about and it's a matter of hip placement-which allows for more body rotation and torque and that produces the lift in the throw. We have some videos on this on our channel so search around on our playlists. Thank you for your comment!

    Hi Steve. this could be a good counter for uchi mata? With the uke's leg between my legs?

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A good way to use this as an Uchi Mata counter is to initially use your hand to scoop between the attacker's legs and lift him up enough to clear his leg from between yours-then throw him with the Ura Nage. Good question-thanks for asking.

      welcomematstevescott would that be legal in competition, since you’re grabbing below the belt? (New at judo)

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't believe you are permitted to use this in the IJF rules, but in other Judo contest rules (as well as in Sambo and other combat sports), it is permitted.

    This technic works to a guy that is 65kg with an oponent of 95kg?

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could indeed work on a larger opponent as is the case with any throw. It's not so much about the strength in lifting an opponent as it is in using an explosive rotational action. Give it a try and see if it works for you.

    this actually looks more like a type of tani otoshi to me. good video

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Kalernor Thanks for your comments. As one of my athletes once said; "No matter what you call it, just call it Ippon." As with a lot of throws that look similar, this could be called a Tani Otoshi as well.

      He lifts him up, so it's ura nage. Tani otoshi is a straight downwards

    Can you do this without a gi

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You can, but make sure that you have a tight grip around your opponent's iliac crest at the top of his hip. Also, it is essential to use your head as we describe in the video and not to allow your opponent's arm to slide over your head. This use of your head literally steers him over in the throwing action.

    Good demonstration, however the throw demonstrated in this video looks alot like Yoko Guruma

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +BillyHandsome This throw is more directly backward than a Yoko Guruma. In judo, this would be classified as Ura Nage (Rear Throw). This throw is common in sambo and considered a basic throwing skill to learn. Thanks for watching and please tell others about our channel.

    I got two ideas for improvement:
    1) first show the technique in realistic speed and then break down the steps, so that we have a better understanding of what to look for. Then repeat it, slow if possible.
    2) Get a girl that can perform it, to show how much technique reduces the strength required. And please don´t get Julia Vins, she may be small, but she wouldn´t prove that point at all ;-)

      Thanks for your suggestions. Pardon my not knowing, but I don't know who Julia Vins is.

      @@welcomematstevescott It was a joke. she´s a real person, but she looks very unreal, like the head of a model mounted on a hairless Gorilla body... AFAIK, she´s only 150cm, but I got no illusions about me being stronger than her... She´s someone, where I can´t look away and confuses me...
      For one, I wonder if she found a method to gain insane muscle mass without ruining her face beyond other typical side-effects.
      Also, on some pictures she does look quite atttractive; a bit on the chubby side, but she´s definitely not cuddly...

    This throw can be executed in Bjj? Is it legal?

    Red belt !!!???

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In Sambo, if you wear a red kurtka (jacket), you wear a red belt and if you wear a blue kurtka, you wear a blue belt. It is not a rank.
