    I've been a real pilot for years and this is well done for a very quick how-to. It's edited and done the way we want, you just give us the information we want quickly with clear concise commentary. Well done.

    7 yr old video that i just stumbled on. I have been playing FS9 since 2004 and i knew how to program the gps but i never knew the autopilot would follow it. I mainly fly VFR but i am getting ready to go flight school so i am trying to fly actual arrivals. Like the real world pilot said this is a 5* video. Straight to the point. No lame ass music or going off and talking about stuff that does not pertain to the video. I definitely have to go watch his other videos on the GPS. I know this is this is FSX but the GPS on FS9 and X are virtually identical.

    Thank you so much for this extremely helpful and clear guide!
    Can this method somehow be integrated into an IFR flight plan? I have landed, am now sitting at the gate, have just chosen the next destination via GPS as per the first half of your video, but now I want IFR to guide me there (altitude, heading, ATC centres, etc.), rather than relying manually on GPS. Is there is way to integrate this or is the Flight Planner function the only way (which then auto-loads the GPS anyway)? Thanks a lot!

    The GPS in FSX has so much more to offer than that though.
    I have found how to use it, instead of the in-game chart, for finding VORs and NDBs and Airports in emergency situations because the GPS tells you info about the airports (like runway length) faster than you can click on it in the chart.
    P.S. The GPS in a couple of the Glass Cockpit aircraft (I think the Mooney Bravo is one) has a much different GPS than the others/the one in this video.

    Cheers Jack, I was looking for a good explanation of Garmin GPS, and I found it here. My only issue was the CRSR PUSH button on the GS 1000, as found onboard the Beech Baron 58; it is super fiddly to operate with my mouse cursor. I got there in the end after about 3hrs!!!!!! If anyone else has aggro with this switch it will work but it has a very fine point to click on with your cursor.

    Ugh, Im so confused. So if you were at crusing altitude when you did this activating the approach would be an instant nightmare as the plane descends at a sickening rate while making an almost 90 degree turn to land on the runway properly.
    If you weren't at crusing altitude/speed, how did you learn when to begin descent in flight and what speed you should be at when you activate the Approach Hold?
    I'm so frustrated that I flew for an hour and a half under the impression that the approach hold/auto pilot would automatically line me up properly with the airport runway that I was landing on, instead all that happened was it flew me straight into the ground with the runway at a 45 degree angle difference from my direction. I don't understand what I did wrong... like 15 minutes out I checked the heading of the runway and the ILS frequency and loaded those numbers into my Course dial (in auto pilot box, the knob all the way to the left with orange cross lit up on it) and the Nav 1 frequency COM (and yes it was active).
    Boeing 737-800, if anybody cares. I don't know why everyone makes Approach Hold sound like it automatically lines you up with the runway of whatever Airport you have selected in your flight plan and all you have to do is just manually set it down at the end. Because that is NOT what happens..

  • @nobudgetkalle

    I like your videos and I appreciate the work you put into them, but can you please go into more detail about how to do all this? I tried using autopilot, setting a flight plan from KIAH to KDFW and doing an ILS approach and landing on 13R, followed your videos step by step but my GPS/autopilot et al. acted completely differently from what you showed in your videos and I ended up over flying my runway at 3,000 ft at about 180 knots.

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean Load to Final and Activate to Final? As loading is just getting ready and keeping it on standby whereas activating it actually engages the flight plan. And no idea on your second one - sorry!

    On the list of approaches, what's the difference between ILS and GPS.

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ILS uses the guiding system to bring you down to the airport, you use that if you’re going to land using ILS. Otherwise use the GPS approach

    Your videos are amazing man, but I have a little problem, I don't know the airport code wich I'll be taking-off it, so I can't program the GPS, also I have a question, what's the diffirence between this and the fms thing?

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! You can look up the airport code online (like Fly Away Simulation or Wikipedia). The GPS isn't available on most commercial aircraft, the FMS is the main flight computer

    • @godlystoupid
      @godlystoupid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JacksFSVideos I know but, I want alot to work with the fms, because like... You feel like a legend when you program the while flight with it, but I can't it's so difficult and people who make tutorials just order us to make this and this and does not explain "why is that for?" "How do you do that?" I mean you got the point.

    Umm, don't you need to contact tower before you even attempt to create an approach?? They're not gonna appreciate an unexpected landing, they're the ones that determine which runway's free for you to land on!! lol

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but then if you're using ATC, you would use an ILS landing for most airports, if not, then ATC will tell you the runway and then you can set up the GPS for landing

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Activating the Approach is for when you've saved the approach earlier and you're now going to activate it. You would then need to Activate-Vectors-To-Final as well.

    Anyone know if there is a way to manage the descent using GPS? I'm thinking more for runways without ILS where there is no glideslope to follow? Is there anything in the GPS that you can use to create a glideslope or do you kinda have to guess it using VS and making tweaks to match the PAPI's (which is how I'm bodging it at the moment) can GPS manage the climb/descent rate or is that outside of the scope of the FSX GPS?

  • @abnormaalz
    @abnormaalz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video. I wonder, how do you make a manually make a flight plan (with VORs and waypoints on your route) without using the FSX planner, but hardcore programming in the GPS itself?

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure for the GPS itself, after all, real-life commercial aircraft don't have a GPS. In real-life, pilots will use the FMC, otherwise you will have to use the FSX planner

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the exact same as normal FSX, Shift+3 (but some aircraft can be different or not even have a GPS). I do explain the difference in the video, but Load is just getting it ready, but the aircraft wouldn't be able to follow it yet, nor would you be able to even see the line on the GPS, then all you would do is hit activate to see the line etc. as Activate is getting to that bit straight away :)

    i have a quick question. when I choose vectors to land the gps gives me a really odd trajectory, it has lots of turns and often it doesn't line up at all.
    do you know how I can maybe get a better approach without me circling around the airport 5 times?

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first vectors should simply be a straight line (unless you go past it). Have you tried it at different airports?

    • @ThomasDeWolf-tt6xd
      @ThomasDeWolf-tt6xd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JacksFSVideos I have tried at multiple airports and very often its a straight line and then it lots of turns. so I shouldn't follow the complete trajectory? at 108 mile ranch (British Colombia) it just doesn't line me up at all. I also have another question whats the difference between those approaches? overall I just want to say that I have found your tutorials very helpful. thank you!

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You just want to follow that initial line towards the runway, none of the other turns around it. Once you've landed, you can just ignore them. They're there for other approaches and/or for going around. Glad my videos have helped tho! Thanks for watching :)

  • @luckarm5481
    @luckarm5481 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m kind of confused since I’m new to aviation. Can you make waypoints with gps?By waypoints I mean custom waypoints or do I have to use the flight planner and do real life pilots have custom waypoints? Or they just use the thing that you explain in the video?

    • @JacksFSVideos
      @JacksFSVideos  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In real life, pilots use the FMC to create custom waypoints. For many FSX aircraft, the FMC doesn’t work. I’m not sure if you can create custom waypoints in the GPS, I’ve never tried it, but pilots wouldn’t use the GPS at all - only in light aircraft
