Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

Carly is definitely beautiful physically
But her internal beauty and talent and the love that eminates from her smile is the most beautiful.

I get what Carly is saying. When I was just a little girl, a friend of the family said to me "Your sisters are so pretty - they look just like your Mom...and you look like your Dad". It is true my Mom was a truly beautiful woman - and actually my Dad was also good looking - but the implied comparison has haunted me all of my life. If only people would think before they speak.
True...but at the same time, people shudnt look at it in a negative manner or light. People are quick to take it the wrong way. I do see what ur saying though. But the saying goes " change the way u look at things, the things u look at change"

@Gisselle ST I totally get what you are saying. As an adult, I know that it was probably an innocent statement. What adults need to realize that their off=hand remarks are taken and absorbed by children. In other words, consider the child and keep your comments benign.

It is what it is, you can't put a positive spin on it. So perhaps learn spelling and you may also learn something more worthwhile to say.

Carly seems extremely sensitive. In a good way. I'm glad she has music as an outlet. Being good at art is great for shy people.
Carly also has a dysfluency disorder and music helped her to stop having a stammer. I think she’s amazing too!

I find it so hard to believe that ANYONE could think she’s not beautiful. From an early age, I always thought she was gorgeous and I loved her big mouth and teeth…..I thought it was a beautiful physical trait!!! Her talent and heart exceed her physical beauty though. Dick Cavett ran real talk shows: half-spontaneous, natural, friendly conversations.
He was never out to be clever, certainly not sarcastic or out to hit hard and dig deep for indiscretions. Wanted simply to lead a conversation with celebs ...plus one other presence, a camera, for company.
We'll probably never see his like again, after so many slick "hosts" who pre-rehearse chats to feature a string of comedic and other peaks, never allowing for lulls or troughs, and too often eager to outshine their guests--while they establish that they're as much the 'stars' of their shows as anyone else.
Sometimes he put his foot on his mouth like the anthologic Richard Pryor interview about the meaning of Jive talk.
@@IronMan-tk8uc I wouldn't disagree that he could land out of his depth, for instance wearing scarves as Johnny Carson might pick when in the company of CSN and Joni, for instance: 'groovy' people.

Still, it was real conversations, and the honesty about him that at least I miss. Much as I enjoyed Letterman, say, his sarcasm and effort to trip up his softer-headed guests quickly wore thin for me. Maybe it's the genuineness I miss...
@@bbailey17b Yes. It was a much less cynical time. In my opinion, Carson and Cavett's approach worked for their era while Letterman was perfect for the 90s onwards, especially with guests like the ditzy Paris Hilton or the deranged Joaquin Phoenix.

Also, why do the current hosts always sit in a higher chair position than their guests?
James had a bad heroin habit when he was young, It likely destroyed their relationship. So ironic he is teased about his education here as his father was a well known professor at UNC Chapel Hill. We lived down the road from them at one time as my father taught there as well.
Although I never met him, I do remember hearing about the local boy who was signed to the Beatles label and had gone to London. And later getting "Sweet Baby James" when it came out. My grandmother, who paid for it, looked at the cover and said she was worried he was on drugs. I just liked the music.
Your grandma sounds like the mom in the movie, “Almost Famous”. 😉
Aww I think they made a sweet couple. Both sensitive kind people. Music that still holds up to this day. Fire and rain, one of my all time favorite songs.

These two were married 5 years at this point yet they behave like strangers to each other here. Maybe it was just the awkwardness of being interviewed, but I had to look up the years of their marriage because I got the impression that this was where they both just met.

It appears that she still does...after all these years. I wish people could realize that having an amicable relationship with their divorced partner is better for their children and each other. We all have history and I don't think it's wise to just erase it and refuse to talk about it. I am not sure what I would do in a similar experience, but I have seen divorced people who still hold their former partners in high esteem and I feel that is best for the whole family.

"You're So Vain" is mine. The lyrics are so clever, and I always found it strange that her later songs didn't even come close to that level of cleverness. I almost felt that someone else must have written "You're So Vain" because it was so different (superior) than her other songs.
So different from the vain and self absorbed entertainers of today. These two were the best but so humble.

I have two older sisters, one a local "Beauty Contest " winner. I was the youngest and had to follow in their footsteps in our small town. Wasn't easy. Well, they would both kill for my looks now LOL Rock On, Carly!!!

Carly Simon is very beautiful charismatic and sensual.
Right before Working Girl came out, I remember her calling me (I was in the biz) and whatever else we were talking about (I don't remember), I happened to mention how amazing I thought "Let the River Run" was. She was genuinely taken aback and she goes, "Really??" I laughed at her reaction and said something like, "Yes!! It's an anthem!" She was so sincere and so humble. I fell in love with her right then. The song won her an Oscar later on. Wonderful, beautiful soul, she is.

Carly had stage fright. I understand that feeling. Carly may have been overshadowed by her sisters as a little girl and lacked enough love from her father. What is interesting though is how much people are fascinated by how insecure some attractive people can be. What is also true is how casually cruel people can be by holding appearances over the heads of children. Casual off-hand judgments by people are the thing that seems to fuel millions of insecure people. This is why someone like Janis Joplin was amazing, she never let anyone’s disapproval stop her from being who she wanted to be. Did it it hurt her? Yes. Did it dissuade her from being a singer? Absolutely not.

Analyzing why you are nervous shifts thinking to the right brain. If you ever get caught up emotionally in a movie, think something that requires right brain activity, for example adding numbers, and the emotion is checked.
Although that left brain/right brain philosphy has not been validated by scientific research. After a two year search they found no proof that this theory is correct. More of a pop psychology further degbunked rather than science

When I was about 12 years old I had a big overbite and my cousin asked me why my teeth stuck out so much and I really didn't know what to say. But I'll never forget those words that she said to me. Then shortly after that I had a retainer and my teeth were much better and straightened out by the time I was fifteen I was much prettier than her.

I had curly hair and freckles and I was teased by my peers, so even if my mom said you're pretty, I didn't believe her (she had to say it, she was my mom). Carly is beautiful but if her parents were rich, why didn't they give her braces? Duh. But then, maybe they suggested it and she said no. Writers (back then and now) who put others down publicly for their looks are kicking down, or attempting to make themselves seem more important. It's true even true on social media today. Disagree with what someone says, but don't call them names or put them down. It can be done.

I had to pause the video in the middle and look up images of Carly and her sisters. While they are all beautiful women, her sisters are most certainly NOT more beautiful that she is! Sorry to think she grew up thinking that.

What's sad is that Carly Simon we'll take this inner complex about her to her grave.
To people who know her family background, her father is completely White and her mother has a ancestral background of afro-cuban-European. Stereotypical insinuation would be that her sisters take after her more of her father phenotypically. While Carly Simon takes on some of the distinct features of her mother's African lineage. This could be stereotypically look that as Carly looking less attractive than her sisters because of the insinuated obvious.
