We just bought a new house that came with a hot tub. I started singing this today to my family. Then I showed this clip to my kids. My daughter asked me if I was going to sing this every time we use it. Yes, kiddo. Yes I am.

Endless years of watching Brown growing up and probably dancing in the living room.
This was an era in the show’s history when SNL was closest to death. Lorne had left and Dick Ebersol was running it into the ground. Yet, one good choice kept it alive. Casting 19-year-old Eddie Murphy saved SNL. He single-handily carried the show through it’s darkest period and made a permanent mark on TV history.
Wow thanks for this knowledge. I always thought it was unlike Lorne to hire Eddie Murphy imho. Now it makes sense. Thanks also for giving credit where it’s due!

A classic
Years ago, our local video store had a VHS steep called the best of Eddie Murphy on Saturday night live. So I played it for my kids who at the time 9,10,and 13 years old. It was all the skits And characters that Eddie had done. We were literally crying and choking in laughter.
Decades later, when they come in for the holidays,
we can pull this clip and others out & still laugh out loud! Watching Eddie host SNL on Christmas 2019 it is one of the best. It was the first Christmas after my father had passed… We needed to laugh out loud.
My kids are now 30, 31 and 33.
I love that video! I worked at West Coast video back in 88. We played it alot!! 😂
That was the first Christmas after my Mom passed earlier that year (glad she didn't have to pass alone like many who died the next year).

Definitely one of Eddie's funniest SNL skits. I saw it live that night and was on the floor laughing. But then he did Stevie Wonder and once again I hit the floor rolling in laughter. Such a great comedic talent!

He will NEVER host SNL or be back again. He was on for the 40th Anniversary I think and it was awkward! He has something against them, I think something happened within his time on the show. Someone will clarify what happened I’m sure
Eddie hosted as far as I know only in Dec, 1984. Famous for that classic Mr. White skit.

And I think a big factor for Eddie only returning 1x since '84 and also since Lorne Micheals came back as the show's "Boss" was this. A skit on "Weekend Update" in the mid/late '90's in which David Spade made a joke that Eddie Murphy's career was "done. " In that period Murphy had several of his films that were disappointing at the box office included a couple that bombed. Not to mention he got arrested in that same period for soliciting a prostitute as well after his marriage to his 1st wife crumbled. I am sure someone else here can confirm. That the general view of it.
Afaik, Murphy is rather hostile to returning since the aforementioned Spade weekend update made fun of him and He took it rather personally since he was so crucial to keeping SNL afloat during his time on the show.
Why Is My Face So Ashy he’s indeed never been back and won’t return. I saw an interview some years ago where he mentioned a weekend update skit wherein Spade really went for the jugular and made fun of his kids or something. Eddie took it personally and said (I believe this was an interview on one of those famous breakfast club shows on radio/satellite) he just didn’t feel welcome and that it was he that held that show off the precipice when Lorne left and Ebersole was killing it. Anyway maybe some day

I think Eddie admitted later that in the skit the water was actually Luke warm to almost cold on purpose so he could do the JB scream accurately as a shock when he first touched it 😂

This skit was one of the most original, entertaining, musical, and hilarious bits ever written. Just as fun to watch it now as it was when I first saw it over 35 years ago.
It also captured the mannerisms of not just James Brown, but even James Brown’s band!

I'm so grateful to have seen this when it aired back in 1983, I was fifteen years old. I remember doing all of Eddie's impersonations... everyone was. That's how iconic he was in that moment.

I was fifteen too this was one the few times i watched SNL back then Eddie was one of the last of the good cast after this they started going downhill in my opinion
