Electrical Engineer here. You need to isolate the speaker from the 12V line. Remove the inductor (labeled as coil). Now connect the 12V directly to the transistors instead of through the speaker. Put the speaker in parallel with the transistors, one side to the 12V line and the other to ground. Add a large capacitor between the speaker and the 12V rail with (-) side to the speaker. This should isolate the speaker from the 12V, preventing it from damage. It should also make the audio sound a bit cleaner. Improving on this: Calculate a base input voltage offset to keep transistors in active mode and add a resistor from base pins to ground. It'll reduce distortion.

In my opinion, best he can do is to use two of these 13007 as push-pull topology, not as "quasi-darlington" single ended. It present topology it's easier to get transistors fully saturated, which causes distortion. Second thing is that single ended amps (A class) have less efficiency than push-pull amps (AB class).
On the other hand, testing bass speaker in "free air" conditions is not a good idea. Even a weaker amp can provide some bass if the speaker cabinet is calculated correctly. Enclosure makes at least half of job in providing bass from the speaker.
And the last thing. Wanna see speaker bouncing? Use a real woofer speaker, not noname like this. This magnet looks really tiny, and suspensions of this speaker can be too hard :) Maybe Eminence Lab12?

This is a Common Emitter design with Collector Feedback. The only reason I can see why you would find the need to put the 3 transistors in parallel is to handle larger currents for stable load lines effects (each transistors can handle up to 8 A, 80W, and 400V).
Also since these are switching transistors, they are not the best amplifiers. Nice project.
I would suggest that you use these transistors in Darlington configuration to get higher hfe values.

@jamdvx Increasing the input to too high a level will cause distortion. The standard for input levels to transistor amplifier preamp like this is about 1 Vpp or 1 volt peak to peak.

You could literally use the exact same parts and make something that sounds good , if you build it correctly and not just slap stuff in the wrong places. Never put DC through a speaker. Efen just using an inductor in the collector would have worked better, look up inductor class A amps.

This is a class A amplifier, wrongly designed.
The transistors work "saturated" so in the loudspeaker constantly passes a voltage equal to (Ucc-0.7) volts, which will lead to its destruction.
In order to be functional, a correct polarization of the transistors and an impedance adaptation with a transformer must be made.

    A couple of things...
18W max @12V (1.5A x 8ohm load) With a 4ohm speaker you would double the current and wattage, also if you use a voltage doubler or boost power circuit you can get more wattage. Of course all the components would have to have voltage ratings to support higher voltage and proper thermal heat dissipation as well.
When bridging the output of transistors to split the current amongst the transistors, you must send the output of each transistor through a .1ohm resistor to account for the variables in manufacturing of the transistors.
Only a positive voltage can be applied to the speaker. This would be considered a push amplifier instead of a push/pull amplifier that can also apply a negative voltage as well. A speaker can push out and also pull in to match the waveform of the music.
I am not an electronic engineer but have been repairing electronic, electro/mechanical devices for 40 years and I am certain there would also need to be other support components to create a quality signal output and efficient amplifier.

It's like the first amp I ever built when I was 14. Mine used only a single transistor and a 12V adapter. Your coil is not necessary, unless you want to pass only bass, you should use a much bigger coil. Quick, dirty, and effective, but most certainly not an optimal design (DC goes through the voice coil, raising it's temperature).
This is a class A constant current amplifier (no electrical voice-coil damping/control), open loop (no feedback) and direct connected output (no capacitor).
    Have fun and be safe!

These are not linear transistors, they're designed to switch rapidly, so the distortion is about 10%. Also "powerful" is not a good description, with a 12V power supply and an 8ohm speaker, you should get about 4V RMS voltage, current will be 0.5A and your power will be 2W at the absolute maximum. Ok, it might be 4W with a 4 ohm speaker. That's not powerful. And since music has drumbeats and similar surges, you wouldn't get more than 1W, really. So, what you have made is a 1W fuzzbox.
I suppose if you have an old power supply and nothing to do with it and you're not fussy about all your music sounding crappy ...

So many questions... I have very little understanding of componetized electronics... Always wondered how to do a simple amp like this... But why not use a cap and resistor per transistor? Like i said, i have very base line "youtube" knowledge on stuff like this, but it'd be my understanding that the sound wouldve been cleaner with less distortion if each transitor had a cap and it'd change the hertz of the sound range per resistor used? Am i correct to say you should be able to have used as many capacitors on a device like this and it'd just help carry a load without constantly pulling power? As in that it wouldn't effect anything other than it's ability to have power as it needs it withou constantly pulling "fresh power" from the battery or the power plug?

Chris Bourassa the Toriid coil in series is a low pass filter but isn’t calculated for crossover freq., it’s whatever it ends up. that’s a extremely large coupling capacitor I thought he would filter power with it . The pot could be tied to ground or center instead of open.

    • @FredtheDorfDorfman1985
      @FredtheDorfDorfman1985 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Dave Zimmerman yea, 1,000 uF? I was thinking smoothing cap for the DC supply for sure, not coupling cap. I would have thought no more than 100 uF at the most. Wouldn't a cap that big lose some of the high frequencies without a smaller cap, like a .1 to 1 uF, in parallel with it? I have lots of circuit diagrams of audio amplifier circuits, one high power one with 9 complimentary pair amps in parallel, in class AB, and it only uses a 1 uF input cap. Granted it has a long tail pair differential amp input stage and two additional amp stages before the 9 comp pair output stage, but still. This amp just seems to have sound quality better than I would have thought it should have for no more than it has to it. Also would 1K bias the transistor bases where they would need to be for a proper quiescent point without cutting off the tops of the loudest waveforms in saturation, or the bottoms below the cutoff point? This looks like a common emitter amp setup, but I would have put a load resistor on the collector to the positive supply, a couple of coupling caps like a 1,000 uF and 1 uF for a small speaker like this, or a 4,700 uF and 1 uF for bigger speaker(s,) on the collectors to the speaker(s,) the speaker(s) to the emitters, a biasing voltage divider on the bases and figured out what values it needed for a good quiescent point, and I might have even considered a low value emitter degeneration resistor and bypass cap to trade a little gain for improved stability and linearity of the amp. Of course I could be wrong, my knowledge of electronics and audio amps is limited to what I've read in books and online, I haven't taken formal classes or anything, it's just a hobby, but this amp though meant to be a piece together from old parts, just seems too good to be true, to me.
