For information as a norwegian guy:
This guy was on Norwegian's got talent when he was like 13 years old and he was amazing already then. He kept on growing through the years. I'm so happy he ended up in the correct side of music! His talent requires a prog band.

So I think he answered why the china is behind him on instagram. Basically he's only supposed to use it for that one section of that song, but if it's in his line of sight he WILL hit it, so he put it behind him so he could only hit it when he absolutely had to. Hence why it looks so ridiculously uncomfortable when he is playing it xD

I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not but as far as I understand it, the second part of the song....Baard was sent that guitar loop which was recorded in free-time with no particular beat used or even thought of...He then wrote a complete drum part to match around that. How he found a steady pulse in there is beyond me!

Baard is truly a genius and what amazes me is how is able to keep a technical groove while having this insane display of energy (I mean this playthrough is the best example), you really have the impression he gives it all for each song.
Then he is an incredibly creative drummer. He has several playthroughs on TH-cam and, while we can recognize his styles, they are all different and showcase a different aspect of his technique/playing. I am not writing that because I am fan of him but they are all worth checking:

    - Rewind

Thanks for this, and thank your patrons. I didn't know Leprous, and it sounds great! Will dive into their music now. Wooohoooo, a new great band found?

another thing of note, Leprous had two drummers for most of their first few tours / first album. pretty sweet. also, make sure you peep the new king crimson live incarnation. THREE DRUMMERS. front and center. one of those being gavin harrison. whom baard does remind me of, in regards to his dynamics and clarity in his performances.

Nice video! Something I think you'd find interesting is in there live version of 'Contaminate Me' they've got not one but two drummers- both synced incredibly well. Even in the midway transition one of them gets up and hits the gong behind them!

Baard Kolstad also performed the drums section of "The Black Page" by Frank Zappa when he was about 19.

The comment about the pinkies made this review for me. I'm a guitarist, and I hold the pick between my thumb and middle finger... and it works for me.

I totally feel you on the Gavin Harrison vibe. He has a very precise groove going. It's almost relaxing in a way and then *BAM* outrageous 2 to 4 bar fill. Then back to chilling. So good!

Breaking sticks and blowing minds is just an every day occurance for Mr. Baard Kolstad
Also, Leprous definitely has metal songs and it's quite interesting to see/hear Baard playing them

Would it be fair to say that this piece is all about the drums, (I'm not a drummer btw), but the vocals and guitar sound out of step to the rythm and his drumming, for me really joins it all together, not just a rhythm piece. I'm blown away!

3:36 Thanks a ton for bringing this up. I might be kind of biased, but I think Baard might actually be one of the best drummers alive right now. Pinkies off the stick are generally frowned upon but when you have results like this, none of that matters. If taking his pinkies off the sticks gives him dynamic freedom like this? Any argument against it kind of falls flat. Like you said, if it works, it works. Awesome reaction!

Not even as request for a react, more of checking out in your own time, the band Katatonia has some awesome drumming, their song Dead Letters has some incredible groove. Subbed man, good stuff

As per technique and which are best - you're absolutely right. There is no "best" because each individual's mind works differently, as are each individual's anatomical structure fashioned differently, which then brings the ergonomic factor into play. Keep a space between the thumb and index, don't keep a space between the thumb and index. Bah! Weckl says yes, ten thousand other drummers say no. And so goes the fundamental fact that there are no fundamental certainties in drumming.
