Everyone rises in The Netherlands to the Dutch anthem. It's considered really bad if you don't stand, or even cover your heart at some occasions. Not singing is also considered bad

There's totally nothing special about that XD Find a country where they don't stand for the anthem and show respect for the flag. I mean, just really, that's not a Dutch nor German nor Swedish nor Polish nor Russian nor American thing, that's just completely normal guys. In Poland we stand for the national anthem, for Rota, for Boże coś Polskę, for Z dawna Polski Tyś Królową, for Gaude Mater Polonia and for Bogurodzica. We even stand for a Christmas carol called Bóg się rodzi. And as far as I know the Brits also stand for Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, I Vow to Thee My Country etc. That's quite a common practice everywhere. Btw Wilhelmus is a very specific anthem when it comes to the lyrics, but its music is epic.

Willem van Oranje geeft aan van Duits bloed te zijn. Dit heeft betrekking op de gebieden van het Heilige Roomse Rijk te zijn, waar in de 16e eeuw de gebieden van het huidige Duitsland en de Nederlanden onder vielen. Het is dus pertinent onjuist te beweren dat de tekst zo moet worden uitgelegd dat “wij” thans zingen van Duits bloed te zijn.

My Grandfather was part of the Canadian Army that helped liberate the Kingdom of the Netherlands during ww2. He had a grade 10 education but could speak 4 languages including Dutch. We played this anthem at his funeral. lang leve de koning! R.I.P Gramps 🇳🇱🇨🇦

My brother and I were hitch-hiking through the Netherlands (we wore our Scout rucksacks on which was the word Canada and our flag)............as we came to a city centre where a great crowd was assembled without knowing that they were celebrating Dutch freedom from the Nazis.......as we hiked along.....the crowd went suddenly silent and then parted to let us through......then someone spotted our flags and the word Canada and the crowd went nuts......people rushed toward us clapping and singing.....and we were literally swept up by the crowd and propelled along as the centre of attraction.......we were hugged and kissed and welcomed by everyone......it turned out that a Canadian regiment had freed the city during the war and everyone thought we were young soldier wearing Scout military pattern rucksacks......what a reception we were given.....!
You must understand that the winter of '45 was really horrible for the still occupied parts beyond the rivers. The USA didn't really care to liberate us, they were after the war industry of Germany to get their grubby hands on the advancements made by the Germans in several technologies. If it weren't for the Canadians liberating us, we would have suffered even more because the USA would have taken their sweet time with Germany first.

Ja, the 5th of May we celebrate that we were freed by indeed mostly Canadians. Our Queen was in Canada at the moment. The former Queen Beatrix grew up in Canada, away from the war. We owe Canada, the US, Great Britain, France and Poland a debt that cannot be repaid in money.
and for good reason, the Canadians practically liberated Holland, they also liberated my city. big respect to those across the ocean.

As a US Air Force officer while serving in Europe, my wife and I stood in the main square in Amsterdam as people gathered to celebrate Liberation Day. I remember the queen coming out of the her building and walking right past where I stood. She was followed by WWII veterans of the British and American armies who liberated the Netherlands. She gave a moving speech. But the thing I recall the most is the playing of the Dutch National Anthem. I was moved by its beauty. I turned to a stranger next to me who was Dutch and told him I thought the Dutch anthem was very beautiful. His face lit up and he smiled from ear to ear and thanked me for my kindness. He was very proud at that moment.
How easy it is to be something other than an ugly American. All it takes is something like a simple gesture of kindness and respect.

I am Japanese. I remember Antonius Geesink from Dutch National Anthem. He was the first olympic champion of Judo open weight division in 1964. It means he was the strongest judo player in the world. So many Japanese judokas respect him !

This anthem is basically William of Nassau making a love letter to his country and God. Really beautiful.
To be historically accurate it's actually some delightfully brazen propaganda for William of Orange who was a very wiley politician and - despite what we like to think today-initially didn't want independance from Spain. Only when it became politically expedient for him did he become the great leader of the Dutch revolt.

One of the best anthem. It's so unique and the lyrics are amazing. It's in William The Silent's perspective, and how he has felt loyalty to his land and his people, and even though he has been loyal to the King of Spain, but because of the persecution and rights not given to the Dutch people, he then turns against them. From the royal's favourite to an enemy. The anthem has a very emotional message and tune resonating to a deep wound or a yearning to one's fatherland, and God - in which William of Nassau wants to rely on and all he ever wanted to do.

A friend of mine was a big admirer of André Rieu and the orchestra. He dreamed with going to one of the concerts, but lived a humble life and was never able to; he passed away earlier this year. Big emotional connection with the performances.

Me too. I'm Dutch, I love the melody but the lyrics are as beautiful. The anthem sings of William of Orange, who led the uprising against the Spanish king who then cruelly oppressed it. This war would last 80 years and William wouldn't see its end. But the fire he started never went out, his sons followed in his footsteps and after a long war, the Dutch were finally free.

Although the official national anthem of the Netherlands only since 1932, "Het Wilhelmus" is the oldest in the world, sung from the 16th century onwards. In any case, it is definitely the most beautiful!

Having listened to many anthems, I feel that Het Wilhelmus is the most beautiful melodically.
It tells a story. It's not an anthem about wow look our country is beautiful. It's deeper then that. Way deeper. The whole anthem is an homage to all those who fought for our freedom, and those of other nations in the Eighty Years War.
have to disagree about melody but the lyrics of Wilhelmus are most meaningful even more than the American one (I'm American). Best melody I'd have to say is the German anthem (at least some brass versions of it are incredible).

Actually, until 1934 not the Wilhelmus but 'Wien Neerlands bloed' was the anthem (before the 19th century there was none). So it was only the anthem of Indonesia for 11 or 15 years, depending on your view on the conflict in 1945-1949.

Actually some road, bridge and rail road still functional until this day. All of this can't be obtained without Dutch engineering and Jamet Kuproy craftsmanship.

To tell the truth, I prefer 'The Maple Leaf For Ever' to 'O Canada'.
I agree it's a very slow & static song, but that is because when the melody was written over 400 years ago, it was meant to be played on a church organ. That the song was designed for a church organ can be noticed very well when you listen to the version on the investiture of King Willem-Alexander (th-cam.com/video/zKPoBGe2oNU/w-d-xo.html)

Our Dutch anthem is the oldest anthem in the entire world. That is something to be proud of it. Also Andre Rieu is a typical iconic person here.
