    I love this machine and it makes great coffee. However, there was a problem when I first started using it, beans would get "stuck" at the top and not go into the grinder. This occurred often, and I would have to push the beans down into the grinder (using the brush/spatula that comes with the machine). This had to be done every second time I wanted a coffee- it got aggravating after a while, a machine at this price should not have these problems. Solution: Forget contacting the manufacturer- useless. However, I found that unscrewing, and removing the inverted cone shaped plastic "guard" the part poking out of the coffee here 1:27 solved the problem. it seems the slant/incline in the coffee "funnel" area is not steep enough. Since removing this piece- no problems, I'm enjoying great coffee at every serving.

      Happy to hear you found a solution to your problem. That sort of things happens every once in awhile with gravity fed grinders. We have it happen occasionally on $500 stand alone grinders.

      I am having this same problem, and it seems to be common with this model. This is the first helpful tip I have read - the experts blame it on oily buildup from beans. My beans never clogged on my faithful Gaggia, and this one started doing it on the very first day. If this works, it will be the only thing which prevents me from returning the machine.

    This video might cause a lot of grief for the new owners of this machine. You really shouldn't turn the mill dial unless the grinding motor is running.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi FS, Thanks for the comment. You are correct. One does need to be cautious about adjusting more than a step towards a finer grind without the grinder running. It's okay if beans are ground out. Also okay to adjust to coarser setting without grinder running.

    I love Delonghi machine, my first Delonghi machine was esam 3200. That was very good machine, I used it for 8 years. After that I bought my second Delonghi machine was ecam xs, it was a piece of junk cuz cost down too much. Especially the grinder, can’t let coffee beans go down to grind very well. It was frustrated cuz each time you guessed the coffee beans down to grinder or not. I am not destroying the company. I just said something honestly. I hope the company can review the machine cuz the company makes a good machine, don’t let me lose trust. Thank you!

      Hi gf, Thanks for sharing your experience. Guessing you made many 1000's of drinks on your ESAM 3200 over 8 years of ownership and took good care of it. Sorry to hear you are having problems with the XS. Hopefully you have contacted Delonghi with the problems you are experiencing. In my experience been feed problems can be easily solved. They are often the result of a partial clog in the delivery chute. Common causes of clogs are dark roasted beans with visible surface oils and/or excess moisture finding it's way into the grinding system from spills or high relative humidity. I have no idea if that's your machines issue - just a possibility.

    I have the De'Longhi ECAM23120SB machine that has a LONG button in addition to the single/double expresso or single/double long. I can't seem to get the LONG button to work properly, I'm sure its operator error but I can't seem to find a video on how to use the LONG button properly. Also to get a Long cup when using grounds. Please help!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Charisse, Your machine uses a press and hold method to program the amount of coffee delivered. To change, press and hold the button you wish to reprogram until coffee delivery begins. When coffee delivery begins release the button. When coffee in cup reaches desired level press the button again. The machine is then reprogrammed for that amount.

    Hello! I've received this as a gift and I'm so scared to use it because I realize it was pricey and I don't want to break it! What are the best type of beans to use with this system? Look forward to hearing from you!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi Mae, Stay away from beans which have an oily sheen on the surface or are flavored with a coating on the beans. Both of those may glog the grinder over time. Other than that just about any beans will be okay. Is there a particular style of coffee/espresso you like? If so let us know and we'd be happy to suggest some beans that will work well in you machine. Some advice: Use a finer grind for espresso and coarser setting for longer coffees. Also coarser for darker roasts and finer for lighter roasts.

    I have this very machine for over a year, and so far, it's been problem free....except now, the frother is acting up. There's a little bubble with hot water "spitting" out sideways where the frother meets the O-ring. I remove and clean the frother and the small black insert every time I use it. After everything is dry, I insert that small cone-shaped plastic, followed by the outer chrome/steel frother. Both are jammed as high and as hard as I can, in order to get a good seal against the non-removable spigot's O-ring. It is now impossible to steam the milk. Is there an separate add-on I can purchase? Or can you replace the frother parts?

    I followed your directions to adjust the mill (where the beans are located) to a finer grind, and it has broken my machine! I should have gone to the official instruction video which states that you shouldn't have to touch this dial, but if you do, there are VERY specific instructions as to how to do it - not like you are showing here.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kerry-Lou Brehm Hi Kerry-Lou, Sorry you are having an issue with your machine. In what way is your machine broken? Is the grinder turning when you try to make a coffee but then does not make one? If that's the case, it may be a clog in the coffee delivery chute. That can happen if grinding extra fine with dark roasted and/or oily beans. Please understand this video is not titled as an instructional manual or how-to for the machine. It's a demonstration video showing capabilities. Adjusting grind is quite common so it's odd the other video says says you should not have to touch the dial. Could you provide a link to that video? The printed manual for this machine states the grinder should not need adjustment initially, but can be adjusted if needed. The manual clearly states "the grinding adjustment dial must only be turned when the coffee mill is in operation."

    • @kerrylou3
      @kerrylou3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Whole Latte Love Thank you for your answer - the video is on a disk that came with the machine - it shows the dial on the outside of the machine - that's OK to alter, but the one inside with the beans is set at the factory. They say in the event that it needs to be changed, to change it one click at a time while the mill is running only. That's what I didn't do. In your video you move the setting from coarse to fine when the mill is not running, and you move it several clicks at one time, (they way not to do that). You say that if one wants to change the strength of the coffee one should alter the setting on the inside, where the beans are. The coffee dripped out very slowly, and after my husband, (upset husband:-) fiddled with it for the weekend, he got it running again. I appreciate now that this isn't an instructional video, and I should have just looked for the instructions that came with it.

    Hello, great work with your videos. I have a question. For espresso, what level of tempteture do you recommend? I cant find anywhere what LOW or HIGH tempreture mean. How many C° is low and high? Thanks

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi, Thanks for the comment and question. For espresso I almost always use the high temperature setting regardless of the machine I'm using. IMO only reason to use a lower temp is if you detect too much bitterness or maybe if you are using very dark beans. Actual temp typically runs in a range from 92-96C - keep in mind this is internal brew temp and not temp coming out of the spouts or in your cup.

    I've experimented a lot with grind setting and dose on this machine, but it always seems to deliver ~30g of espresso in 10 to 12 seconds, counting from first drip, which seems very very fast to me. Everyone asserts 25-30 seconds as optimal. Is this normal for this machine?
    I've read that it uses a 15 bar pump, which might explain it. However, I've also read that it is reduced to 9 bars and the only reason a 15 bar pump is used is to make flow rate more consistent. Attempting to set the grinder to its finest setting and the dose to maximum, the result is often a shot that is delivered in drops, not as a consistent flow.
    If the very quick delivery time is a consequence of high pump pressure, is 10-12 seconds for ~30g an acceptable time? Or if it's not because of the high pump pressure/the pressure is actually reduced to 9 bars, should I grind finer and accept that a shot will come out a drop at a time, or is this still normal in this case?

    Hi Whole Latte Love, I'm new in this ride and bought this machine.
    A simple question, how did you extract a coffee with so much crema like this in video?
    Tried many different variations on hopper or coffee strength and I just get a slightly crema on top.
    Is that all coffee beans related or I'm doing something wrong?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Marcus Vinícius Mota Hi Marcus, It may be the coffee as different coffees produce different levels of crema. What type of coffee are you using? Depending on your tastes, you might want to try an Italian style bean blend intended for making espresso. Many Italian style blends contain some Robusta which is known for producing crema - even in coffee that isn't exactly fresh. Robusta gets a bad rap in some coffee circles as being an inferior coffee. But, in a bean blend it contributes to the overall flavor profile. See the links at the bottom of this comment for some well known crema producers that we carry. If the flavor of Italian blends is not your thing then stick with very fresh Arabica beans and use within a few weeks of the roast date. Other tips for crema in super-automatic machines: Use the finest grind setting and highest dose settting. Here are links to good crema producing coffees:
      Lavazza Super Crema: www.wholelattelove.com/products/lavazza-super-crema-whole-bean-espresso-coffee

      Hi Whole Latte Love, thank you for your explanation! I'm using Arabic beans on my Delonghi machine, I've tried 3 different brands around here (Brazil), good to know that Robusta is the bean I'm possibly looking for.
      I believe I proved a Robusta in a coffee shop long time ago, but I wasn't initiated in this coffee lover lifestyle.
      Can you send coffee overseas? Or you don't suggest to do this because they will not arive fresh (30+ days for sure).
      I'm intending to find good blends around here first, to get a fresh coffee and try.

      Hi Luis, Honestly nothing in that price range which does not use a smaller pressurized filter basket. It limits coffee dose and fakes the extraction as the basket restriction cause the pressure of espresso brewing process and not the puck of coffee as in standard non-pressurized basket. The best and lowest cost entry level machine with commercial size components and non-pressurized brewing is the Gaggia Classic: www.wholelattelove.com/gaggia-classic-ss-brushed-stainless-steel-semi-automatic-espresso-machine It's currently $329 For best results you'll want a decent burr grinder as well. The machine is factory set with a test run of delonghi beans and no adjustment is needed. Just fill the water tank and everything just works, out comes a perfect coffee. It won't run well on oily beans as they gum up the auto grinder feed chute. Use Delonghi beans. This is european manufactured to a high quality standard too. Looks much better made than the chinese made Breville machine I looked at. The steamer has a auto air intake that needs no skill to use unlike the so called traditional steam wands. Your machine should continue to operate without issue with the light on but you should descale your machine as soon as you can. Don't let it go more than a week or so. Scale can eventually clog your machine's boiler. Here's a link to the descaling procedure in the machine's manual. It's on page 15: www.delonghi.com/Global/InstructionManuals/EN/EN-5713214231.pdf

      The machine is letting you it needs to be descaled. Very important you do this. Descaling removes calcium and other mineral deposits in the boiler. If you let it go to long the deposits can damage the machine. Please refer to the machines manual for the descaling procedure.

      The descale instructions are on page 15-16. If not followed exactly and to completion it is possible the machine thinks the process did not complete. If you believe the descaling process was followed correctly, then we advise doing it again without using the descaling product - just follow the process, but using plain water only. Be careful to follow the process exactly as described to completion.

    We have had the S model for 6 months and the only stupid design feature of it is the need to flush the machine at intervals. We use RO water for drinking and for the coffee machine because we have bore water on our property and I just hate wasting water that is perfectly clean. Delonghi made a huge mistake in this design with not having a cancel mode for the scheduled flushing

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi g, Thanks for the comment. I understand your not wanting to waste the water. The flushing on startup and shutdown is part of the cleaning process for internal components and helps keep the machine operating properly. Hopefully you are not using pure zero TDS RO water in your machine. That type of water should be remineralized prior to use. Water with no minerals can be corrosive to metals in the machine. It also causes over-extraction of coffee resulting in bitterness.

    Hi Whole latte love, I have this machine and here lately I've found water in the puck bin, would you happen to know why? Any help would be appreciated.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some water in the grounds bin is not unusual but excessive amounts can indicate a problem. One possible reason for excessive water is a brew group in need of cleaning and or rebuild. The screen of the brew group can become partially blocked by coffee oils and residues. Also some O-rings in the group that may be due for replacement.

      +Whole Latte Love Thanks for helping, yeah, lots of water accumulates in the bin so I'm pretty sure something isn't right in the brew group. Do you think it's something I can fix or should I send it out for repair? Do you rebuild/repair damaged components?

      Hi Johnny, Delonghi is one of the few brands for which we do not provide service or stock parts for. Your best bet would be to contact Delonghi Tech Support directly You can find their contact info here: www.delonghi.com/en-us/customer-service

    How do I switch on the ECO mode? Or is it an automatic feature on this machine?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can turn it on and off. Here's a link to the manual for the machine. Procedure for turning on/off Eco mode is on page 11: www.delonghi.com/Global/InstructionManuals/EN/EN-5713214231.pdf

    I have Magnifica S and after few coffees I had a problem. Machine displayed error "Empty container".
    Nothing could fix it until I moved the coffee in the grinder container. Coffee created dam at the entrance to grinder and so the error message

      +StagArmslower I am willing to bet you're using oily beans...that is a no no with this machine and you risk gumming things up along with possibly damaging the internal parts.

      Hi YZ, Thanks for the comment. It's all food safe materials used - they're good to go in California which has some of the strictest regulations for that type of thing.

    how many esspressos can it make in a day?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Catherine, It can make an espresso every minute or so. Sometimes when we get that question it's because someone wants to use a machine in a commercial setting. We would not suggest that with this machine. It's intended for home and office use.

    Will I be able to practice latte art with this machine?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi JT, Probably not. Most super-auto bean to cup machines I've worked (and I've used most) with are not capable of producing a froth quality which works for pouring latte art.

    Yeah, nah it is not automatic if you still have to prepare milk by yourself. I prefer something that comes with a milk container.

      Hi G, We call those one-touch machines. Very convenient!

    • @timsmith3743
      @timsmith3743 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually switched from a 1-touch to this, and find a lot less cleaning is involved. Yep not one touch, but the milk quality seems a lot better (not commercial quality), but more that satisfactory. But yes, if I have to make 4+ coffees in a single sitting I do miss the 1-touch.
