I was in the college street in 1972-73 and lived in a hostel of Calcutta University. I'm from Jessore, Bangladesh bordering district. I just finished high school and went 1973 to buy Biology, chemistry and math in English from college street. Those were new books. It took 3-4 from Jessore. Pre- independence in 1947 there was direct bus and train from Jessore to Calcutta. Our district people rarely went to Dhaka.

Poets, novelists, artists, freedom fighters, scientists, teachers, students … coffee house .. is a massive place in the history of India ….creativity probably thrives in a place where the chaos around us creates a sphere of silence and a state of calmness in our minds. Seeing beauty in a wild flower maybe. You raised a very critical question Michael.

I recommend you to visit kolkata during durga puja atleast once. Its the biggest festival of Bengal and I can say that durga puja is an experience everyone must have. From Art to culture to food to lights, everything is there in durga puja. The festival also has the status of unesco's intangible cultural heritage now.
Two other places I'll suggest to visit in kolkata are Kumartuli and Eco Park.

7:39 Asia’s first Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. His pen had such an edge that he gave his national anthems to two countries each. One of the people of India( “Jana Gana Mana”) and the "Amar Shonar Bangla" of our neighbouring nation of Bangladesh. Indian Coffee House has a long history dating back to the pre-independence era of India. Given that colonial Britishers would not allow native Indians to dine at coffee shops, as an act of self-determination, a chain of home-bred coffee houses sprouted across India. Since the year 1958, it is run by a co-operative society of Indian coffee workers. They have many outlets in the country but perhaps no other outlet is as popular as the one known as “Coffee House” on College Street in the central part of then Calcutta, now Kolkata.

College street is where I grew up and spent the first 21 years of my life. The book market is still the same as it was since I first learnt to read. Who's who of India have visited the Coffee House. Bill Clinton wanted to visit the Coffee House, but since it wasnt part of the original plan, his security denied it. The last place is College Square, a place to learn swimming in summers and spend time with your friends otherwise. I used to go 6 days a week to College Square, if not, the week felt incomplete! Keep up the good work.

I am sure they got ovwrwhelmed by the claustrophobic atmosphere. Mike was trying to flee from the place where Rupankar Bagchi was performing.
Which is what the sad directionin which Kolkata has emerged I feel.
People have shed the older customs to pick up the new ideas but who can change the people themselves, it is in the genes, so whatever is picked up , learned and understood the atmosphere remains same, maybe attrractive to many but still oppressive to others.
I think Mike falls in the second group.

That's what my dad used to tell me. He used to protest the Vietnam war against the US in the 70's in Calcutta and they used to gather in the coffee house. So fascinating
