    I would definitely vote for dumping those wood chips in the garden and letting the birds do their part. The pigs likely didn’t produce enough nitrogen to break down the high carbon in those wood chips so the birds would go a very long way in doing that. By the time spring rolls around you won’t believe the kind of soil you have underneath those chips!

    The chickens would do all the work of tearing those wood chips up. Ben Hollar does his garden space with his chickens. If it works for him, it should work for you. The chickens would love it and next spring your garden space will be composted and ready to grow food.

    I would do a 3 way combination. 1. Build the pallet compost system put 1/3 of the wood chips in there. 2. Put 1/3 wood chips in the garden and let the chickens till it up 3. Leave the final 1/3 in the Bacon Bro’s pen and put your meat chickens in there. Then evaluate which does better.

      That’s a lot of wood chips. I like this idea the best of 1/3rds. When I had my garden I used wood chips a ton to keep down weeds and save on watering, yet they would take awhile to breakdown. I didn’t have chickens through. 😂

    Good idea, putting the chicks in that part of the garden.When you put the wood chips in the garden, put green matter and a little soil in there too so the composting process can start faster. When you put fresh chips in the hog pen, don't start with such a deep layer, and put some al[ over every day. in the garden, put green sand, lime and rock phosphate, it will take until next spring to blend with compost and it shouldn't hurt the chickens. Test your soil in the spring to see if it needs any other minerals.

    Jason, concerning the pig poop wood chips...move it to a close place to process. The pallets could be placed near the pig pen. Moving the chips to the garden might be farther to move but the chickens will add to the pig poop and help turn and process for your garden, in the garden. In the pallets, you move chips twice and would need to turn and keep it wet. In the garden you move once & your chickens process for you. Blessings brother

  • @chasviaud4123
    @chasviaud4123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Spot on Jason, chickens loves to scratch manure and any bugs that might be in with the wood chips. After there finished or during them scratching they will leave their own manure which helps the soil become enriched, then till the garden and cover until spring and you'll have some great garden dirt for the next years planting. Good luck and stay safe, all 3 of you. God Bless>

    Love the idea of putting the wood chips into the garden since you do no till. If you bury the wood chips they will sequester nitrogen from your soil to break down. The chicken poop will be high in nitrogen so that will help offset that. There is still time to plant some fall crops if you care to do so. I enjoyed the video as always.

    Put some in with the layers. Keeps the flies down. Put a bunch of small piles in garden put chickens on it. Till it in after they are done. Cover for the winter. Put chickens in pig pin to keep it breaking down. Then put it in pallet box to compost. As you know red clay gets very hard the more organic material you get in it the better you are.

    For moving all those wood chips, you are ready to graduate to a large 4-wheeled or 2-wheeled cart! Like a Gorilla cart or from Amazon (Agri-Fab 45-0101 750-Pound Max Utility Tow Behind Dump Cart, Black) Or a bucket on your tractor? And some helping hands to make the project go a little faster and more fun. I liked the idea of 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 from a sub below. Chickens are your work crew for now. More pigs in the near future. Love your story!!!

    We only hand weed around plant stalks, just far enough back that we can get the rest with the propane burner once a week while they're in the heavy growth stages. Also drip watering (opposed to broadcast or large soaker hose) helps a lot. We have found ducks also eat weeds but leave most of our veggies alone.
