Great job dissecting the "it's about the characters, not the robots" sentiment.
Man, I gotta get into Patlabor one of these days. Really enjoyed the part about the production team keeping the rights and creative liberty of the series since it's pretty rare to see anime/manga that isn't influenced by marketing trends and the like. Glad I saw this before watching Patlabor, great vid dude!
Time to fess up. You did watch it by this point, right? I mean it's not that hard to get into, the first OVA series only has seven episodes and you can jump straight into the movies afterwards.

Thank you for the video! Patlabor is both my favorite manga and my favorite OAV series of all time. When I was a Rumiko Takahashi fanatic in the early Nineties I believed nothing could top Uruseiyatsura and Maison Ikkoku, then the same magazine started publishing Patlabor chapters and I was hooked. Unfortunately, it's also a tough sell if you want to get people interested, 'cause its many qualities can be very subtle: the realism of the technology, the intrigue of politics and corporate wars, the day-to-day life of wonderful characters that feel absolutely REAL, the sense of humour... it's incredibly smart and mature stuff. But lately I've thought about a possible comparison for american audiences: in a way, Star Trek the Next Generation (in the best episodes) can be similar. You've got a crew of characters that are good at their job, following a wise captain, and the interesting thing is not necessarily the plot itself, but seeing your beloved characters react to that plot.
Absolutely based, love seeing more and more people talk about Patlabor.

ahhh, so glad you were able to finish this by the challenge deadline! I'm still kind of a novice when it comes to making these kinds of videos, and you are so good at saying a lot in a short amount of time! The discussion about Headgear reminds me of the situation with BE-PAPAS, the team behind one of my favorite series, Revolutionary Girl Utena. I enjoyed hearing about that - 'tis cool.
What an interesting breakdown! Between this and Kaiserbeamz' video on Patlabor it's delightful to see more people talk about this great franchise. I hope you discuss it again in the future, I feel not enough people talk about the other entries (the first movie and TV series along with the second OVA are my personal favorites).
Your point about "it's not about the mecha" is spot on as far I as I can tell. I'd wager this is kinda the result of the mehca bits of these anime asking the viewer to dig a little further. Not that the themes tied to such aren't obvious in a lot of ways.This is largely speculation on my end, but I have to wonder if the combination of this and the mecha genre's general lack of mainstream popularity with modern anime viewers ends up creating this. A sort of knee jerk reaction to the realization, that "wait, mecha shows aren't just fun action romps meant to sell figures."
Good stuff btw, glad NOVID has highlighted some smaller creators I can follow.

1) Yes, Patlabor's world feel more grounded, more like our world or an equally complex reality, which is a feat in a world where ghosts and Kajui are real.
2) But I really think it is the characters, too. Maybe it is a side effect of the grounded world, but the characters feel more complex and realistic than their counterparts in most mecha I have watched.
Have you ever watched "Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero"? If not, you should watch it. It's a LOT like "Puella Magi Madoka Magica". It's cute, but.....

There's one thing which I think might have been unadressed and which I've always been thinking about: Is it copaganda? I haven't seen Patlabor but I suppose it's relatively harmless if the subject didn't even need to be brought. What does it think about cops?
mmm. i think, on any given day, much of the cast is too comedically incompetent at their jobs to have the effect of portraying police in a positive light. like no one walks away from patlabor thinking "wow giving police giant robots is a good idea, we should definitely do that." if for no other reason than the sheer quantity of oota's wanton destruction of property.

this is the big flaw of the argument, it applies to every mecha, it's just that normies use it as a fucking silver bullet to kill any reason to explain why they don't like mecha
