- This week I wanted to bring back Randy “Rawhide” Wurst to cover layering of Survival gear.
Randy did a series of these videos that you can find in our video archive. He covered gear in his vehicle and everything. However, to save time in an already long video, Randy didn’t open every pouch and pocket.

I was diagnosed with cancer at 42 years old, and it kept me from Operation Valkyrie for the last two years, but I beat it, and I will not miss another chance at that. Randy is obviously a family man and dad. If dad's don't carry extra crap around for other family members....the extra crap isn't available for them when needed. Some trips I will pack four extra jackets so I can be assured of keeping mine on me when the temps drop!! Another great gear video.

This tip for hand warmers was told to me by former a former army infantryman from Montana who went on to serve in the guard in Montana and Alaska. During winter, if you're in bitter cold, activate two of the hand warmers. Put them on your throat by your carotid/jugular and have them held in place by a balaclava, gaiter, scarf, shemagh, etc. It'll keep you super warm, keeps you alert, and you won't even notice the cold.
Randy is a national treasure!! Get as many videos with him sharing as much knowledge as possible! He's a dying breed! Not many left like him, and you too Karl. You guys are AWESOME!🇺🇸

I am a former force recon marine. I love your channel. I absolutely miss the comraderie you displayed with the "jabbing" of each other. I never had children but my niece has learned some of my "rules", especially "always bring a jacket" and was a prideful moment on more than one occasion telling my sister and mom when we were on our way out of the house. Like to see Randy's philosophy on different knives and their use. Got a Cold Steel Outdoorsman as an anti personnel knife and am really liking it. Randy and Imri do a great job on the knife reviews.

All is nice when things are calm and one can resupply from the local store when needed, but a lot of people don't realize that in a longer term survival situation, one will not be able to resupply with the same brand of items that they know and love and will have to manage with what they find.. Having the knowhow and ability to adapt on the spot is far more important than the gear brand. This can only be achieved by learning and then practicing.

I get the same grief from my wife, kids, and grandkids They call my over-the-shoulder sling bag Dad's "man-bag" or worse, Dad's "Murse". But I get NO grief when they need some OTC pain meds or a bandaid or safety pin or mints or ??? cause I got most of that stuff on me 24/7/365. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and knowledge, guys!
HAIR TIE...(the elastic band girls use to make ponytails). Works better than rubber bands to hold things together like charging cords. They would probably work well to hold the 2 treatment bottles together.
"Thickster" brand non-latex gloves are pretty thick (imagine that), work well, and can be found at many automotive stores or Amazon.
Outstanding video...Thanks to two great American heros'. I just turned 74 this past Saturday and getting around in the woods on uneven ground is a B***h, so I have added a couple of extra items. Walking sticks, and a "Deer" hauler from Cabelas/Bass Pro Shop. In the winter a pair of Ti Snow shoes. If you have to abandon your vehicle and walk any distance, the Deer hauler will carry 300 lbs, free up your back and make it possible to bring a lot of stuff with you from the vehicle. Wait a sec...Randy's getting heat because his stuff is selfmade? Talk about hypocrits. There is a guy with a sh...load of experience. Everybody should just listen. The selfmade stuff is the best stuff. YOu don't have to like or, you can do it in another way. But this stuff has proven its worth for HIM. Perhaps even I will do it differently. But this man is a treasure chest filled with wisdom. And the experience a man has made in his life - especially if it is a life filled with "little things " like Desert Storm - are priceless for all who follow. Keep on going and thank you very much for sharing.
Great video guys! You only desperately need a light one time to ever after carry 3 or 4 like I now do. I was working the desk 15:00-23:00 at our PD and decided at the end of my shift to ride along with a patrol guy from my shift (they worked 16:00-24:00) for the last hour--mostly just shoot the shit with him. While riding, he got a call of a person who had fallen into a gorge screaming for help. We responded, and we descended into the deep gorge with me in arrears. He was in full gear and all I had was my desk pistol--no light. The gorge was absolutely black. Recent rains had the water racing dangerously through it. Even when yelling, we could not hear each other. He had his flashlight that lit his way, but I could not keep up with him as he raced along. His light was pointed ahead of him making the stone steps on the trail not visible to me. Had I mis-stepped and gone into the water, I'd undoubtedly end up dead in Cayuga Lake. He was unaware of my situation, and I lost sight of him several time as he raced ahead and I fell further behind. I ended up literally tiptoeing my way down in complete darkness with the rushing water inches to my right. Eventually, I found him and the injured young woman. She was about a quarter mile down from where we entered. She had fallen 85 feet from the gorge rim, landing (thankfully) in a small shallow waterfall. She had two horrible compound leg fractures and screamed continuously from the pain. I'm retired now, but I sure learned my lesson. Also, GET WELL SOON RANDY!!

this was a great video. What people who complain fail to realize: Randy used stuff that is Readily available, or easily made. go to your local walmart's sporting goods section, and boom. this is the type of thing that people need to remember when they prepare for the worst, or train for the fight. if shit gets bad, and you end up having to bug out, and go disappear into the woods or the mountains you need to have the right stuff with you. keep em coming Karl!!

Enjoy Randy's survival experience wisdom and always gleam something new from him. Personal hygiene such a toothbrush, hand sanitizer, toilet paper are so important and under estimated items for a survival kit. You really appreciate having those hygiene items, extra batteries, backup gear during an extend stay in the field. I am Karl's age and was 17 when I joined the Army but I can still vividly remember those early lessons from not being properly prepared. You build on experience and Randy has made Survival preparedness an art.

Great stuff, always appreciate both of your insight. Always learning something new, from your insight and experience especially with the vegetation bag for water extraction. So many good ideas and reminders and wants. Bandages are always a must, can't tell you how often I've used them. You are always a hero to children when they see you with a bandage at three drop off a hat as they tend to seemingly always need them. Allows my to go through my bag and fine tune what I can use and not, through application and practice. Thank you both!

Great stuff guys. You are both legends. I have been very lucky in my life to have met many "famous" people. It comes with my job. I have a habit of asking them the same question. Namely: "What is the bit of kit you never go anywhere without?"
I once asked this question to Margaret Thatcher (she was my boss at the time). She, in typical fashion, answered me straight away. She dipped into her handbag and brought out a torch. "I always carry this," she said, "every since Brighton when the bomb left me in total darkness. It has served me well ever since." She was, as I knew, referring to the attempt of terrorists to take her life on 12th October 1984. They murdered five, injured 31, but she escaped (thank God!).
When the bomb went off, (it had been planted behind tiles in a nearby bathroom a month earlier by terrorists), she was plunged into complete darkness. That was never going to happen again, she told me. Well the bomb might, but the darkness wouldn't.
So Randy is spot on with his torch (flashlight) obsession.

Hi Karl, Randy…great video as always. No idea how anyone can bash or make fun of what Randy carries. The guy literally wrote “The Book” on survival. He really is a legend and a wealth of knowledge. Any internet ninja talking shit wouldn’t survives an hour in an austere environment. Throwing out a tarp option for everyone that hits on everything Randy said to a T including the size is the 10x10 (3mx3m) Superlight Tarp from DD Hammocks. Amazing tarp! Edited to add that his cheap tarp is Outdoor Products and can be bought at Walmart, I have had one for years. Great video, can't wait to get into one of Randy's classes!

It was nice to see the redundancy with small critical items. I recently removed some redundancies from my pack feeling like I was being excessive but now I'll put them back in.
I love these videos. Thanks for the content! It's always fun to see what different equipment someone else carries and Randy always impresses! I take all kinds of notes during the sessions with you two. I don't know what you guys think of carrying duct tape, I tend to need it all the time with my sons, I take about a foot long piece of Gorilla tape for each zipper on my pack and wrap it around the pull cords , folding the last 1/4" back on itself for easier deployment. I never have to look for it that way! Awhile back I was shown those compressed paper tablets, Wysi Wipes, those things are crazy useful, super strong and the kids get a kick out of watching them unfold with just a drop or two of water. Maybe they would interest someone on here, thought I'd pass that bit along.

"Pimping the next greatest thing..." when I realized this is when I discovered I had grown past "that guy". Worse is when they bad-mouth even passively something they just tried to sell you in their last video.

Knives, if I could but I work in "polite" company, I'd carry 3 intentional (not counting little blades in multi-tools) - 1 fixed, 1 folder, 1 scalpel folder (they are awesome if you have not tried) for EDC. In "urban polite" I have never had anyone ask for or need a knife. Some even get all nervous when I or another pull out their normal folder to cut a box. They have way bigger knives in the kitchen, but my 3" folder is scary?
In a disaster situation I'll have 6 knives, one for food as I don't want pitch or other nasties on my food knife to avoid sickness unless I don't have a choice. And a short machete.

That red pull saw is a "Cor*na" brand (don't wanna get censored over a freaking brand name), and for the money they are fkn awesome. They are commercially available at big box stores and worth every single penny of the 20-25 dollar price. The longer one like randy had is faster than the smaller one I have now (first big one I had made MANY cuts and lasted years and years) for a price that's borderline a disposable saw. I need to get a big one so I can put the medium in my car stash.

27:29 What we did with those handles of axes or shovels sticking down from our belts, was we tied a boot blousing garter at the hole of the end of the handle there, and hook that around our knee/thigh. That way it doesn't swing around everywhere and get in the way when taking a knee. Another great video! Thank you

Interesting to hear the things he doubles or 6x up on and the places where he spends the money. I carry a lot more varied gear, but that is likely a symptom of having a tiny fraction of the skill and no super threatening experiences other than a couple unexpected overnighters and storms when out and about.
Thank Randy for the knowledge given from experience. I thought it was interesting how much the crap I have matched up with Randy's packing. But noticed that I'm lacking in a few areas.🤔 My man bag started in late 80s a butt pack with canteen pouches on sides and canteens w/ cup and 2qt canteen strap to carry it. Now a Spec Ops butt pack. The main thing I found I'm lacking in is lights.
