How to Make Traps and Snares for Small Game | Tactical Rifleman

  • Now before anyone asks, I will not show on video killing traps or snares. It is my believe for that skill set you would need to be in one of my survival classes, were I can supervise you period.
Always remember it is your duty, & responsibility to check your snares or traps at least once a day if not twice a day. You may need the food, but no animal that gets caught in one of your snares or traps needs to suffer any more than is necessary. Nature is here on this earth assist us in sustaining life, we are not to abuse its life because you’re not responsible or respectful enough of its life!
To be successful with traps or snares you must know first where the game lives and its habits in the area. Snares or Traps are no use to you if there isn’t game to get caught in them! Most of everything you need to know about my techniques for snares and traps you’ll find in the video. I will remind you of some safety issues especially spring-loaded type of snares or traps. Never, never put your body between the trigger and the snare or trap. If it should slip the actual trigger will fly back in your face and cut you or even take out your eye. While I was showing Doc on of my spring-up type snares I put my self between the trigger and the tree I was using to load-up activate the spring-up portion of the snare, and it slipped and cut my me just about my left eye. It just barely missed my eye. He had to make a butterfly bandage to close up the wound. If you don’t pay attention even for a moment you can get seriously hurt. Using the tree for my spring-up mechanism is my favorite way to make a snare, but because you have tension on the trigger system, which is set to go off with very little movement of your snare, the wind can accidentally trigger your snare. Remember an animal has its own idea of where and when it will go somewhere. To increase the likelihood of an animal getting caught in one of your snares or traps you must bate it, and canalize it to entice the animal to go into your snare or trap. There many different styles and techniques for making snares and traps. In the video are the one’s I use, because they work the best for me. Never limit your self in learning any skill set, try other techniques to expand your basket of knowledge!

Love the Ojibwa bird snare! We used to make it with a little twig spring-pole to power the snare, but the weight works fine and is quicker to make. Caught many starlings and blackbirds on the rare Kentucky snow days...and many other days as far as that goes. The birds make great bait for predator trapping.

Randy thanks for this info. I have never used fishing leaders as snares, but man, that takes some out of the work out of it for sure. One thing I have used, that is the same principal for small game is guitar strings. About.18 to .24 gauge works good, and they are ready to go. Also, music stores sell them as individuals for those of us guitar players that break strings. It happens. Anyway, they are dirt cheap, and weigh nothing with a made on loop to use as a running bowline for your snare. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and experience.

Fiance and I've been watching "Alone" intermittently. The lack of bird hunting/trapping has been surprising me, but now I know why! Thank you for the knowledge bomb Randy, I appreciate your secret knowledge! Something I'm not getting... On the rabbit/squirrel trap, how exactly does the animal trigger the trap? I understand the trigger and tree-spring aspect, but I'm not following what part of the animal and why the snare is snagging on? Is the leader line not smooth? Am I just over thinking this one, and the animal steps into the loop on it's way through, and doesn't raise its paw high enough to not get caught in the contracting loop?

Randall, thank you so much for this video, and taking the time to create, hands down, one of, if not theee best bird snare I've ever seen. Pain in the ass huh? I believe it, it looked like you put a ton of work into that. But if made right, that thing could last for such a long time. Challenge accepted, going to try my hand at making something like this.... Thanks again for passing your knowledge and wisdom...

They'll be eatin' when you can't. Got a dove & squirrel feeder not 12' outside my front window that's hanging off a 3' 90 deg. 1/2'' conduit that's been screwed head high into a black walnut tree. The feeders kept filled with sunflower seeds & millet. Them little bastard squirrels were continually hammering it for the sunflower seeds, till I decided to drop the feeder by a galvanized 3/16'' wire cable about 3/4 the length of their body away from the tree trunk. As they stretch out to the feeder with their back leg claws hanging on the tree; I can not only tell what sex they are... but they can only access that side closest to them which allows for the doves perch in which to feed on the other 3 sectors. Feelings are mixed about the feeder from those in the neighborhood who have trouble with squirrels nailing their fruit trees. So @ the of the conduit I'll palm hammer home an apple on the end of it. Hell, for all I know I might be promoting the neighbors fruit desecration's.
It's a smorgasbord deluxe for 2 couples of Red Tail Hawks who'd several times swooped in from the street side of the feeder & forced a dove into my window pane & leaving an oily body and wings pattern on it. Other times they just land on the bird bath & bath themselves while a squirrel sassy's them not 4' away. It might be a good nature show for my junky ass... but it's also riot for someone side-walking their dog & the dog smacks into their instinctive treeing, instead of peeing mode. I know one things for sure about the squirrels and the doves. Both will become mighty good augmentations for beans & rice, if it should come to a continued stay of @ home survival.
Obligements for the trap & snare instructions Randy:
From the hilltop neighborhood of the 36th Division WWI Camp Bowie firing range. 1/504 '71---'74
