I was on the r/NHL and there was a picture of Gudas celebrating and literally every single comment is ridiculous. People saying it's classless and bad sportsmanship and even some fans of other teams saying that while they were supporting Florida prior to this, they will now be supporting the Canes. Like, are you not allowed to have passion? Some even bring up Woll is a rookie. Like do they think Gudas even caresif it was a rookie or veteran? I just found it so pathetic that Gudas was being scrutinized for celebrating a series win by other fanbases. Like are you gonna cry if a team walks you off in baseball when showboating a home run?

Expected goals don't win games, actual goals do. I think Toronto got goalied a little bit in this series. You have to be able to adapt though. Playoffs are largely taking two pretty evenly matched teams and seeing which one can adapt and adjust. Generally, the longer the series go the more each learns about the other and the more each has to change things up to find an edge. Sheldon Keefe needs to go. It is absolutely stupid that he couldn't find favorable matchups at home in both playoff series.

I’m not a leafs fan. I am (unfortunately) a Canucks fan, have been my whole life, and for me I always feel bad for Toronto fans until they start talking. Like they seem to have this superiority complex about their team being the best of all time every year and then when they lose from simply just by not playing well enough they blame everyone and everything for it instead of looking at the team. I am very used to watching bad teams because of who I support and there were moments that the Maple Leafs looked as bad or worse than we do. You will never win a series playing like that. Toronto should just offer AM a 7M contract to be generous. He helps get to the playoffs but if you’re going to be paying a guy like 11M dollars he should be expected to preform in the playoffs.

It’s very rare that he plays a game where he doesn’t register SOMETHING on the stat sheet. Even if he has zero points and a negative +\- he’ll at least have some blocked shots, takeaways, face off wins, ect. As a lifelong Leafs fan I agree with you and it's SO frustrating to me. The ridiculous fan comments about how the NHL doesn't want Toronto to win is ridiculous. If the Leafs made it to the final it would be a huge win for the NHL with TV viewership numbers that they could then parlay forward in future TV contracts, showing how high the numbers are. I'm not saying that as a brag, it's just a fact that Toronto has such a huge fanbase. This series was not "rigged." Toronto played well but they just couldn't finish. This is the hardest trophy in any sport to win. Kudos to Florida for being able to take out both Boston and Toronto, and I wish them well.

    • @sevtas8422
      @sevtas8422 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Maybe not the Leafs in particular but there is a clear bias toward American teams in the NHL like abundantly clear. Bettman has shown he is more in favor of American teams than Canadian. It's really not rocket science to figure that out. I don't think the series was rigged either Leafs just played bad but overall when you look at officiating and marketing and other bs choices the league has made you can see the favor tilt the other direction every time. I mean for example putting Chris Lee as the ref for the Habs Knights series in 21. Chris Lee had made the most calls against the Habs out of any team and they put him to officiate that series knowing that ahead of time. They then took him out and replaced him once people caught on. It's ridiculous sometimes. I use that example because it affected the team I cheer for and I don't want to speak for other teams fans but I could name more.

While I fully 100% agree that it's not "rigged" against Toronto I strongly disagree on the other parts, the NHL has no interest in seeing a team like Toronto win since Toronto will always have fans and always make money even if they suck. What Bettman wants is "growth", which in his mind equals American teams winning while creating new fans and investors in the process.

Matthews Marner Nylander all look for it. Doug Gilmour was tougher and more determined than those three combined. They love playing in Toronto because they are coddled by management, they are adored by fans and not held accountable by team or fans or media. They are SOFT! if Matthews would have had to play against Messier when the latter was in his prime Matthews would be curled up in fetal position at the end of bench wanting nothing to do with Messier at all. Nothing will change for them when all are brought back , and oh yeah Matthews wants to be highest paid player in NHL. Good luck finding pieces to put around him to win. Matthews is concerned about making bank and getting out as unscathed as possible by the time he hangs 'em up. And I don't blame him, why should he sacrifice his long term health just because some sad Leafs fans demand it?
The problem is this is a violent league that, quite frankly, scares away skilled players. They take to other sports like football (real football, not eggball), baseball and basketball. Hockey is expensive and violent. People in hockey (and eggball) can get severe long-term injuries, some of which lead to suicide / depression.

    A couple things.
    1) regarding reffing. Reffing changes in the playoffs. Everyone knows this. The refs let guys get away with way more, which means a lot of things that are penalties don't get called, and when that hurts your team you remember it more than when it helps your team. This also means that it's hard to see where the line is of what is and what is not a penalty. I think this is why fans get upset, because they think they're being unfairly treated when actually they're unfairly remembering (because that's how our brains are wired) a fairly even distribution of bad officiating. I will note I thought the reviews in this playoffs so far have been good. Goalie interference has been called on plays where avoidable contact prevented the opposing goalie from making a save, and not called on plays where the attacking player made every reasonable effort to avoid contact, was outside the crease, or didn't affect the goalie's ability to make a save. The goal being called back, quite simply, there was no angle that I ever saw that conclusively showed the puck over the line during play. There's that one angle that clearly shows the puck over the line as Bob's standing up, but he wouldn't be standing up if play had not been stopped, so while I suspect the puck DID cross the line, video can't confirm it, so you cannot call it a goal.
    2) regarding expected goals, the numbers used to calculate xG are based on the entire league, so over long time spans above average shooters will build up a positive goals above expected, and below average shooters will fall into negatives. However, this doesn't necessarily work very well in a playoff series because you are playing against only 1 team, so if you are against a particularly athletic goalie who is above average at saving second and third scrum chances, scrum chances will increase your expected goals disproportionately to actual goals. The fact that almost none of the Leafs had a positive goals above expected suggests that either they were facing above average goaltending, or almost every player saw a decrease in shooting ability once playoffs started, or both. Either way, Expected Goals doesn't matter in the playoffs and advanced stats usually rely on a sample size that isn't possible in the playoffs.

I've been saying it for years, but the Leafs got way too greedy when they signed Tavares. They already had Nylander, Marner, and Auston Matthews, and instead of going out to get a true no. 1 defenseman, they thought it would be a good idea to dump a bunch of money to get a second no. 1 center? Tavares was just as absent as Matthews this series and he's wearing the C...and there was controversy when that happened if you recall. Maybe giving the C to Matthews would have give him a bigger sense of accountability. Not saying he would have signed, but Drew Doughty was a free agent the same year as Tavares and signed for the same amount of money. Alex Pietrangelo became available a year later. Love your content Eck, but you are dead wrong on the Gudas thing. I get that he is excited that his team won the series, but most people would simply skate over to their teammates and celebrate the success. Instead of doing what most people do, Gudas decides to scream in a rookie goalie's face for no reason. There was no indication that this was premeditated because Woll doesn't strike me as someone who likes to chirp. The fact that Gudas thought it was a good idea to make a rookie goalie, who was already put in a tough spot, feel like crap doesn't sit right with me.
I will say this, I hope Woll keeps a photo of that moment and frames it so he can motivate himself moving forward. It's the kind of thing that builds character and I think this will do a lot of good for his drive and mentality.

Florida played "heavy" on the Leafs just like Tampa did, but Florida has meaner guys. Maurice is old school still with a few of the guys who play that way. I didn't like how Bennett took out Knies but they knew he was a threat and they play him hard, that's how hockey is. I was just pissed nobody stepped up for Knies or protected him. Watching Marner getting flappy punched by Tkatchuk and nobody responding just means that Florida has no respect for the Leafs, which they shouldn't.
We lost because our defence is crap and by that i mean they can't get the puck out efficiently like Florida. For example they had 3 chances on the last game to get it out on one play. This happened so many times in the playoffs. I think Woll played fine and glad he was kept in.
I think in terms of contribution everyone did something crucial in the playoffs. Auston with his two goals for one TB game, OReilly doing his job standing in front of the net and making a crucial goal, Marner making an impact and on the scoresheet for that one win with Florida, and being the best play maker IMHO. Nylander with the most scoring and making the game tying goal on the last game. I think Auston got injured when he got hit by the shot earlier in the series. Anyway they played to their max based on who they are. The problem is they are not tough as nails or resilient for the playoffs. Remember we lost to TB last year best of 7? I think the leafs fought hard but TB became STRONGER and made it to the finals, whereas the Leafs looked WEAKER going into the Florida series.

    2. It's tough to tell whether Gudas intended to taunt Woll or not. It's a bad visual, but he also happened to be in the paint when Cousins scored. He saw the goal, and his first instinct was to scream out in triumph. That said, Gudas isn't exactly the epitome of sportsmanship and is known for crossing the line at times, so who knows?

It's kind of hypocritical of eck making this video calling out "leafs fans" after his video talking about how a few fans of a franchise shouldn't represent the whole franchise. (The video mentioning about kings fans) I'm not a Toronto fan, but I'm not very fond of this video calling out a few diehard complainers to call out the whole fanbase.

@@joecornman5271 Eck isn't consistent in what he does. I've seen that part...lol. Sometimes he's actually completely off the mark, as is on this one. It's just blatantly obvious to anyone that Gudas was not just celebrating. He was being a complete ass and intentionally trying to aggravate a goalie that they just scored on. We'll see what happens in the following series. There are players that will go over the top in being an arse in the NHL...and those that will not. I think the league could do much better in policing that line between ethical...and non-ethical just plain nasty behaviour. Does the league really want to breed complete arses....so they can do horrid nasty things to each other?

as a leafs fan, we can allow ourselves to be mad about the refs because some of the calls that were or weren't made had some impact on how the game ended. but there's more anger for our players not showing enough grit and simply ghosting when we needed them most. sure auston, mitch, and john played big roles against tampa but they just couldn't keep it going which is super frustrating. willy and mo were the best of our core throughout this run and this team had some of the best defense and goaltending in recent memory which makes it even more disappointing.

You’re allowed to be mad at calls but so many of you guys act like it’s a unique problem that effects Toronto only. I saw a stat that said there was a major blown call in over 90% of games this year. Not sure if it’s real but you guys need to understand that no one is out to get you but because there are so many like that, we will continue to enjoy your losses.

I started to blame management and players more than the league or refs. So i’ve been in the same spot a lot of leafs fans are in with the refs or league. But look at your star players first they play the game, blame them first not the officials the refs do their best to control the game and have the players play by the rules.

    NBA:
    West- 1st seed v. 7th seed
    East - 2nd seed v. 8th seed

All fanbases have the same ratio of these “bad fans”. Its just that the leafs have the most fans in the nhl so you see more of these comments and people tend to remember and react to negative or salty comments more than the positive ones. Thats why people think this about knicks and cowboys fans too. People say they have the worst fanbase but all fanbases are literally the same.

  • @crusDbumcheeks

Completely agreed. I'm a Las Vegas Golden Knights fan, though that series hurt to watch. The leafs looked sloppy the whole time except the occasional good play. Especially Nylander; for someone who is supposed to be one of the best players on that team I couldn't help but think that was a joke as all he ever seemed to do was float around and give 15 percent effort. The leafs definitely deserved to lose that series, but I think that game specifically should have ended in a leafs victory, especially considering the completely visible angle of the puck crossing the line even before the whistle was supposed to go off. Should have been 3-2 Leafs W with no OT, but I can't imagine they would have been able to squeak out another 2 games against a team that actually looks like they deserve to be there like the Panthers. Go Golden Knights
