Jumping out of a Boom Lift. JLG 80HX Lift

  • Why buy a lift? THIS IS WHY!
Some folks think the rappelling incident was staged. I assure you, that happened. Some of the video footage was recreated, but I presented it exactly as it happened. I really did get stranded, I really was alone, and I really did have a rope with me, and it really was the first time I had brought a rope with me.
Why did I need to be up in the lift to get drone footage? I should have explained better. Of course I can get drone footage standing on the ground. I wanted footage of me up high in the lift. Mainly I was looking to get a cool thumbnail.

Welcome to my redneck amusement park! I hope you liked the video! Some folks think the rappelling incident was staged. I assure you, it was not. I really did get stranded, I really was alone, I really did have a rope with me, and it really was the first time I had brought it. Why did I need to be up in the lift to get drone footage? I should have explained better. Of course I can get drone footage standing on the ground. I wanted footage of me up high in the lift. Mainly I was looking to get a cool thumbnail. Oh, and the pond is 12-13 feet deep in the area where we were jumping. I estimate the highest I jumped was about 35', 10.5 meters. Have an awesome weekend everybody!

We use to jump off a train trestle and a road bridge into the Thornapple River when we were in high school. It was a blast waving at car going by as we would jump.

Well, now we know the REAL reason for the purchase LOL
Imagine driving one of those through a shopping mall with 3"of clearance on each side between a kiosk with $70k worth of hand blown glass on one side and a glass plate storefront on the other. At 3am. Hopped up on caffeine. And getting paid to do it. For two weeks a year. I've had a weird life.

I don't think you were fooling anyone with the falling, but it was definitely entertaining ;)
I've got to say... didn't expect the rappelling though, I expected you to climb down the boom instead

    • @magoo_1990

I thought the same thing, that sliding down the boom would be option #1. Of course sliding down the boom would do a number on your Johnson.

    • @oso9809
      @oso9809 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The rappelling was actually safer. Even with a rope if he slip off the boom he might smash into it swinging back and forth.

    • @davidshettlesworth1442
      @davidshettlesworth1442 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, I agree with you I was waiting to see how he was going to slide down the boom. I don't routinely wear a repelling hip harness with repelling hardware, so I would have been the scared little monkey skooting down the boom.

I got in a similar situation a couple of weeks ago when my ladder fell after I had gotten on our roof. No one around to respond to my calls for help so I "slipped" off the lowest edge I could find. It was a hard hit and I'm still recovering. My family is very angry with me. Alas. I'm 73 but didn't feel like it until now. :(

Dropping off a roof makes anyone feel 73, no matter how young they are. Always bring a cell phone when you working some place like a roof, or operating heavy equipment.

    • @Teklectic

Whenever I go up on our roof (which is as infrequently as I can manage) I always use an old strap and screw the ladder to the fascia for just that reason!

My dad has an RV at our farm to use as a getaway. He was coating the roof 3 or 4 months ago. Ladder slipped and he went down about 12 feet onto the porch. Somehow he didnt break any bones but he landed horizontal. Busted up his face and was one continuous bruise for weeks.
I'll tell you what I told him. You're damn lucky. Hope you heal up well partner.

I am quite the fan of the show. Probably for the similarities I find in you and I. I am not afraid to take on these challenges that you do. All these things you need to do to make the old equipment work. But today you just proved that you are at least one step ahead of me because there is no way in hell I was stepping out that basket for any means.

There is something different about that first step off of a structure vs. a step off of a rock face. Even if the rock face has an abrupt edge, it is less nerve racking to go off than it is go out a window and on to the rope. And as you mentioned, being on a less stable structure adds a little more excitement for your brain to think about.

That is a fantastic video and that is one heck of a boom for height. What a great way to enjoy the pond on a hot day ... I was volunteer Ski Patrol for seven years out in BC Canada and one of the largest things I had to pack was rope , but I can't tell you how many times it was used to haul people out who didn't didn't know how to read ; " Out of Bounds or Avalanche Area ".... Sure everyone loves new powder but very few know how to ski on it ! ! !

Ex-rock climber also, thnx for your method to butterfly the climbing rope over neck and shoulders. I learned to butterfly instead of coiling early on, and we would leave the free ends long, so after we contained the butterfly loops, they were long enough to go over shoulders and around the waist like a backpack.

You sir, have a rich life! I always enjoy your videos. Keep ‘em coming! I’ve also done a fair bit of rappelling and might add that you keep a pair of gloves in that dry bag with the rope. You did fine with the figure 8 but if, for any reason it got away from you, the potential for rope burn on your hand is high when trying to slow it back down.

I got a JLG scanner on newer models they have ECM after 2000+-.
Check boom wiring where it is in tray .
Also where it plugs into plugs and pins get corroded.
JLG are the best. Free repair parts manuals online.
John L.Grove (JLG) invented first hydraulic cranes .
There is a museum in Shady Grove PA.
I had many Grove and JLG the best.
We used to set lightweight trusses with this lift .
Be careful driving on uneven ground I almost got tossed out of basket going off a curb . Pot hole curbs not good when driving with boom up.

⚠️ On our fire/rescue apparatus with mini crane hoist, we have recently upgraded the electrical system for the accessories. Under normal conditions, the vehicle provides 12vdc to the hydraulic pump.
We now have a 12 volt / 100ah LifePO4 lithium battery mounted in a stainless steel battery housing adjacent to the vehicle mounted controls.
It’s charged from “shore power” when plugged in and parked in our parking garage.
During normal operation, the hydraulic pump is powered from the vehicle (older wiring configuration = wired to one of the 2x 12v vehicle batteries) and there is a pair of solenoid type relay/contactor devices that disconnects the vehicle 12v power supply and connects the LifePO4 lithium battery. (“normally closed” for vehicle power / “normally open” for the 12v battery).
Power for the “emergency battery power” system is from the LifePO4 battery and there are 2 locking push button switches wired in parallel. One at the vehicle mounted control panel and the other is in the cab of the vehicle. In a boom lift type unit like this, you could easily mount additional controls at the boom bucket OR use a wireless controller for wire free installation. (just make sure to use the best possible components- no Chinesium junk when your life depends on it.)
    Power fails from vehicle battery?
Flip the switch and the aux LifePO4 (or AGM or “wet” sealed lead acid or vehicle battery).

How you manage to move cameras around all the time while working by yourself. And your thought process. I really enjoy your videos. Also, maybe you have footage that you think isn't good but us views would still like to see it. Maybe put those videos in an unlisted B-Roll playlist like Andrew Camarata did. Nice place you have. Like the driveway. You can keep the lift.

Awesome 👌 trick 😎!! You really did get me and I'm glad it was a trick because I really do enjoy watching your videos especially the way you will go into details when you do a project. Keep up the good work and when I do retire from my regular job maybe you could use a hand on the farm? Because you seem like you would be a great and fun guy to work for in my Golden years!!! Lol 😆

Just another idea for a back up regarding stuck up on a boom lift. You could put a back up battery in the circuit with a switch in the bucket. You can keep it charged through the normal charging system. Run a line up to the basket to the switch and occasionally use the system to be sure the rig is functional. I suppose you could also use it as a back up battery when your main goes flat with just another switch. That way you can still work with just a flip of a switch and then when you are finished with the job sometime later fix the problem with the main battery. Sounds like a good plan to me. I would do it if I had your rigs.

As a rock climber, I might have some suggestions. For instance, don't let go of the rope below the rappel device while stepping out/off the platform. Either keep it in your hand or wrap it around your leg a few times. You don't want to weight that figure-8 and not be holding onto the rope or it will be a quick trip down. There are better ways to coil a rope for climbing too, but that probably doesn't matter since this is for emergencies. Mostly, rock climbers need to be able to feed out a rope to a climber and not have it be twisted.
