I do agree with you it's extremely important to be self-employed and to homeschool your children. When it comes to land , There is only so much land available to be bought. Lots of wealthy people are hoarding large amounts of the land. When it comes to the so called God , if the creator really did want us to be happy the creator would not allow innocent children to be violated or abused in any way!
When I proposed to my wife, we agreed to base the budget only on my income so when kids arrived she would have the freedom to stay at home. I retired two years ago at 47 from engineering to full time farming. It’s a lot less money but the time with the family is priceless. The kids have skills, knowledge, and compassion.
We're the same. We live off one income and bank the rest. We don't have kids or any bad habits. I buy nice cars and computers and she likes getting tattooed a lot. Otherwise, we don't spend much money. I spend my free time on the ranch being a good steward to my land.
I hated engineering. I hated my project managers, cocky coworkers, the ruthless schedule and taking my work home constantly. My wife and I started a cleaning company and we spend 24/7 with each other now, have great employees that we treat and pay well, and when we're home, we're home.

I made the first step to run my own company 11 months ago. It hasnt been a bed of roses but GOD has greatly blessed me and i am thankful for it! My family life has greatly improved, i get to spend time with my babies and even take them with me on the job site when its safe. We also have homeschooled our kids their whole school career so far land refused the garbage that is being forced on our kids. The point im trying to make is, stick with it and never give up. When the work slows down and the pressure is on, pray and ask GOD for help and wisdom. HE will open up the flood gates and and get you through the tough times. The risk is worth the reward. Jake

I was with Diesel Mechanic for big company for 25 years. After the pandemic I realize how much they do not care about you. So I decided to sell my house and move where I can afford to start a business. It’s been a little hard but I’m at home all the time and I’m a lot happier. Absolutely agree. Have been on this road for about 5 years now. Quit my job, started my own small business as a contractor/handyman, started my social media channels and my wife did the same. She makes content as well, is a seamstress and is great at computer coding. We have five children and we home school all of them, gave birth to all of them at home too. I thank God for the grace He has shown us and in giving us the will and vision to fight hard for our family and those around us. God keep you and yours. When we found out the wife was pregnant I quit a 125k/yr job 60+hrs + commute time for s job I only make 84 but work 40 with commute time. And she gave up a good paying job to o be a stay at home mom. Had to sell my beautiful diesel truck and other toys and live a lot more frugal but it was worth it. The wife makes breakfast and dinner and I get the be there for both and help put him to sleep at night. Financially we may be a bit strained but I don’t regret it for a second. I can make more money later. Buy another truck. But I will never be able to buy the time I would have missed seeing my son grow.

My brother was complaining about not making enough money in IT, I told him you need to quit your job and go on your own, he heeded my advice. That was 25 years ago and he now owns a 2 houses, a boat and put 4 kids through college. Thanks for the content and greetings from NJ.
After I had lost one child to the world we studied which people group had the biggest success in raising children, it was the Amish. The one thing was besides mom at home was dad was always around either with a home business or worked for a neighbor and was always home at mealtimes. Yes, we are poor by the worlds standards, but rich in family values. Blessings all.
Where does that happen? The Amish that live 20 minutes from my house all work at either a lumber mill making pallets, or a cabinet factory. Arthur Illinois region. I think it has less to do with parents being around all the time and more to do with their general culture...God, Work, God, Work...abstain from mind altering substances...abstain from most modern technology... that sort of stuff. And, with them living a mostly secluded life, we don't hear about any of the negatives if and when they do occur, unless a drunk guy gets stopped by cops in his buggy.
@@bryanburcham1381 a lot of Amish work away from home. It varies from community to community. But it’s the fact that they eat dinner together every night, work together as a family and aren’t distracted by TVs and cell phones. There is still lots of abuse and sin in the Amish communities. Absolutely correct. From 18-28 years old I worked an average of 60-80 hours per week between the Air Force, College, and Graduate School. Still living in slummy townhomes and have yet to make a serious living. Next chapter is working toward running my own business. Thanks for the advise and god bless you and your family!
Spot on! My parents farmed with my grandparents. My dad's "office" was a 100 acre field within sight of his home and family. I now work in a 8-5 office setting and I am so envious of that life.
I am currently 6-7 months into running my own business. It was a scary transition, but I don’t think I could ever be a 9-5 employee again. I love being my own boss and having autonomy and self agency.

What a great peptalk. I am so proud to be able to support my family, and my wife can stay home and raise the kids. I took a whole huge risk for years ago and bought a very modest commercial crab boat. I make two or three times more money that I ever did being an IT person in an office.

I was pushed out of the best job I’ve had in August 2022. We changed nearly everything about where and how we live. I miss the money and benefits but our life is so much more rich now than I’ve ever lived. I type this from my tarp/hammock at 3:41 am Virginia time, i stopped participating in this broken system in early2020, and even tho i havent had a weekly check in over 3 years, i am happier than ive ever been, my life is rifle+mountain. My days are spent helping my mom and brothers, or studying and practicing my independency. Im armed, free, and have love in my life, and i promise, u do not need to be on the federal hamstet wheel to be happy
8 years ago my wife gave up her senior position at a large CPA firm to stay at home and raise our young boys (#2 had just been born, and now we have 3). It was scary at the time because of the massive reduction in household income but it was the best decision we’ve ever made for our family. Great advice in this video, Cody!
I worked two jobs for 25 years so my wife could stay home and raise our kids. We sacrificed to invest in our three sons and it has been the best investment we could have ever made. We struggled immensely but our boys were raised with love and they are all hard working, loving fathers and husbands. My wife now Kees the grandkids. I’m planning to retire soon and sit back and enjoy the fruits of Gods blessings on our family. Thanks for this word Cody, you’re spot on as usual.
I've had my own handyman business for 9 yrs now. My wife homeschools our 10 and 8 yr old. We try our best to put Jesus first. We live off of income and have been blessed. I would recommend this type of work to anyone who knows how to work with their hands... I'm as busy as I want to be.
It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to a fireside chat from Cody and it was just as inspiring as it always has been. We just moved from a small trailer in the country to her dads house and after his passing it’s time to pick up the pieces. She has an awesome opportunity to grow her business at home now, and when the weather changes here in Ohio in a few months the cleanup begins and I plan to finally execute on the life’s work that’s been calling to me as well. I currently work a 9-5 and a 6-10 in order to pay off my student loan debt. I’ll be all paid off by Wednesday and I’ve been debating whether to keep the evening job or not.. On the one hand my life is exactly like you describe; I’m swamped for time and come home every day without an ounce of energy to spare. My sleep, diet, and general fulfillment have all suffered.. On the other hand I feel like the extra work is necessary if I want to ever be able to break out of the rent/debt cycle. If I can save up enough for a down payment on a house I can relax after that
Keep the 6 to 10 job for 3 more months and reevaluate then. If it seems feasible and you're stacking some money in the bank then keep doing it. Also since you won't "need" that second job it may be a lot less pressure and you can probably afford to miss a day here and there if you want. Try it out for a little while and see if the extra money is worth it.
This is a quality video. As soon as my wife found out she was pregnant with our first child, she quit her job to be a stay at home mom and we plan on homeschooling our little one. The money she made can't even compare to the awesomeness of being a housewife. Pair that with my teleworking job and we have our family together nearly 100% of the time.
Love this message! My wife and I bought an old home we turned into a wedding venue. We work together and raise our son. It is very difficult but the best times we have is when we are all working on projects together. I should make a video on this because the fear of starting a business and the risk required was almost too much for us. But almost 2 years later it was the best decision we have made!
I work for a rare employer that really values their employees and encourages time off, leaving early when necessary, and pays salary. It's the reason the company is growing.
It's easier than people think, I started my small construction business when I was 25. 9 years ago this month, during the Obama administration and in Illinois. You can do it, anyone can do it. You just have to start! Good luck all! Edit: when I started my small construction company, I looked for specialty equipment after the first year. I bought a seamless gutter machine and a couple years later I bout an air duct cleaning machine. Look into specialty services of all kinds.
My parents use to say to me all the time growing up…”You’ll never get rich working 40hrs a week for someone else.” It’s absolutely a 100% true statement. I’ve been self employed for almost 25 year. I couldn’t imagine working for someone else. That sounds like absolutely horrible to be honest. 😂 And though I’m definitely not rich. I’m very comfortable and live a great lift.
Well spoken, Cody. I work for the church and my wife is a school teacher. We have a good setup where both of our jobs are, and our childrens school is within walkingdistance from our home. This is so valuble to us! We put in full weeks of work and beeing employed, we don´t work for ourselves, in a sense. But at the same time I feel we do. We work for our community - the community where our children are growing up, a community where the other families are our friends. The other children at school and in church are our childrens friends. The well beeing of our town is directly linked to the well beeing of our family. So when it comes to what you work for, I think there is something to be said for this community aspect. But certianly, if you commute a long way and your employer just takes and takes, and has nothing to do with your family or your community, then I would fully agree - quit now and do something else. Put your family first and make all choices and sacrifices accordingly. That is what every parent is called by God to do. Greetings from Sweden!
If you think you’re too tired to play with your kids after 9-5, wait until you start your own business. I know of very few small businesses that succeed without the determination and grunt work from the owner, at least initially. Maybe you pay your dues, build up a successful business, and get to the point where you can hire help. Well now you’re the “ greedy employer, breaking the back of your workers for profits”.

Me and my wife went through some lean times and had to sacrifice. At 35 years old I went from a Job working for a fortune 500 company earning 160k to throwing papers on my mountain bike in the sleet and snow at 0200hrs while my wife took the car and threw her batch as well. We were both out there in the trenches together, but thank God we were together. We have always stuck together through thick and thin, good times and absolute crap. Once Ol' scratch can pitch a wedge between you and the ones you love, then you are easy prey. Stay strong, work together and grow strong together like an old oak tree.
This is exactly why I spent years figuring out a way to work for myself, and to convince my wife to move states (can't do anything or afford anything here). Going to single income, going from barely able to rent to buying land and a house, and best of all I'll get to spend time and energy with my kids.

I’m 27 and have worked for myself for the last 5 years running a small business. I’m very curious where everyone thinks working for yourself is less exhausting/stressful?
Keep working for yourself and keep growing your business and skill set of being a business owner and you will understand. Being profitable starts around the 5 years mark for most business so it makes sense why you may think it’s more work right now. I would love to see you keep at it and reflect back to today 10 years from now. My only request is that once you do and you have your lessons learned is teach someone else so they can do it in 12 years vs your 15 years. It’s all about growth over time.
I've been at it since 2008. I wouldn't work for someone else but while I do work more than 40 hours a week, I also have complete control and I know I always have a job. There's a different kind of freedom from all this hard work, it'll work out, but there'll never be a shortage of hard work to do.
He means you have autonomy to chose when and how to work, if you want to work 60hrs+ that’s fine (but it was your choice). An employer forces you to fulfil criteria to earn money, when self employment you have greater autonomy over your time. Stress i would argue can be harder in self employment, as you and only you are responsible for sales.
I work from home and my wife is a stay at home mom who also homeschools our children. We could definitely increase our income by having her work, but it’s amazing to see how well our family is doing like this. I would encourage anyone to lead their family this way.
I just took the leap myself you said it exactly as I have been saying for awhile they don' not care about us. It is scary to go off on ones own, but it feels so good knowing you are doing something that God aligns you with.

I work a retail job in nyc. The orange tool company. Im 21 and let me tell you, I'm truly grateful for this job because it is the exception to your standard job. My bosses let me do as I please, I can take as many brakes as I want, I can call out 3 times in a row and show up the next day like nothing happened, I have everyone's respect because I actually put the work in, even when not needed however I feel no sense of ownership or success. I'm confused but determined - but you're right.
They let you do that because they understand you are a high value employee, but don't let this lure you into a false sense of security. I have been a high value employee at many places that would give me a large amount of freedom because of that, but there always came a time when they started to try and take advantage of me. When I pushed back, they showed how much they cared about me. Or didn't care, rather. It is inevitable. Take your effort and place it somewhere that works better for you.
Indeed you worked hard to enjoy those privileges. I enjoy similar privileges myself but unless I sell myself I will never move up, which is why I’m quitting next week after getting no where in ten years at my job. To get you under their control they will play mind games and unless you resist you will become a slave to their corporation and thus “sell yourself”. If you wanna be a slave, have at it! Always good advice Cody. Been thinking of quitting my job too, as a cook. Been doing it for 16 years, and my brother, a few friends and I have been thinking of starting up a barcade. My small town of 83 people needs buisinesses, there's only a post office, machine shop, trucking, and grain elevator.
Me and my wife are SDA and when our first child was born my wife felt the calling to quit and raise them. It was so tight for a few years and we worked so hard and started our own contracting business and doing remodels and repair work and God has blessed us abundantly. Praise the Lord. Hard work and prayer is the way.
Over 10 years ago, I had a job when I came back from living abroad that I traveled 4-5 days week in three different states as a sales manager, supervising 2-4 people that paid well. I was freshly married and a small child at home, every time my phone rang, I would cringe. I did it for nearly three years. I looked for a year, and was blessed with a great job and great bosses at a local community college, with amazing benefits, I'm not getting rich, but I have TIME which is so important to me because of family and was able to start a side gig 7 years ago. The Regents and the Cabinet leadership really honor and respect their employees, which I can say is not a common phenomenon in the workforce today.
Great advice! After my wife's cancer diagnosis, we decided she would work only 1 or 2 days per week, as a Cath lab nurse. Now she takes the Nino to school and God has increased my income to fill the gap and He has taught us that materialism is not of Him, so we have greatly reduced our spending. In Christ, all things are possible.

I'm 27 and have been working 9-5 plus overtime for 7 years with no upward growth. I haven't been saving or investing. My dream is to start my own food cart/truck business and serve affordable food in a landscape of prepared food being extremely expensive. My buddies have been in the food industry for just as long as I've been slaving away and we are starting to get it in the works. The goal is to have a farm, the mobile food business, and start a collective for others to do the same. I've never wanted to make a bunch of money. I just want to be happy and fulfill my life with service to others. Wranglerstar, we come from very different backgrounds but your resilience and wisdom has inspired me.

I do love my job as a land surveyor but you are right about not seeing my family since I work 50-60hrs a week. You are also right about the “company” not really caring about me if I am sick or can’t come in for some reason. I kind of feel like I am too old to start over. I started a construction business 4 yrs ago that changed our lives for the better. I learned everything from TH-cam, lumberyard employees, and books. I often make less money yearly, but our time together as a family and quality of life is MUCH better. I don’t miss kids events, b/c I control my time and priorities. WranglerStar is 100% ACCURATE!
I only had a 9-5 for one month back in 2013. Since then I have been making money on my own. That month was enough to scare me from ever doing that again. It was horrible.
so I quit my 9-5 2 years ago. I started woodworking, personal training and farming was land I had. It is true that my 9-5 was ALWAYS abusive and bad leadership for 20 years across multiple companies. However this year I had to go back cause I couldn't make enough to support the family working for myself. We cut expenses over and over and over till we couldn't and I had to go back. This is a lot harder than "just do it"

I worked for 21 years for a company that required me to work 50+ hours including weekends, I was so tired and unable to spend time with my family. I found a business I loved doing and built it up until I could make enough to pay bills. My only regret is that I didn’t do it before
Poor is a state of mind, I have never been poor broke a few times but never poor. My wife and I decided to homeschool our boys and have never regretted it. I was working full time as a Career Firefighter. As of two weeks ago I was handed a termination letter. I was told my crew did not trust me. The truth of the matter was, my crew would sit around and watch movies that I as A christian could not watch with a clear conscience. So i would focus on training, reading and doing things that would give me a better understanding of my occupation. So I have decided to focus on my small engine business until God makes it clear what the next step is. I currently have 3-4 months worth of work and am trusting God for my families future.

I agree with you Cody. As a small business owner, I own and operate a small welding business and I am glad I made the move. Where the problem lies is, if everyone quits what they are doing no matter what the occupation that makes an already dismal supply chain even worse. As you know, anything and everything is already 2 steps from impossible to get in a timely manner. This makes living up to timelines very difficult. I try to do my best to offer my customers a quality product that is fair priced and do my best to deliver in a timely manner. I am finding it harder and harder to do that these days due to the ever diminishing labor force. Its a crazy world we live in these days. Best job I have had was a fancy high end jewelry job and everyone was so proud of me and I hid the fact that I was miserable and drinking heavy and mean to my animals and just burnt out. I quit that job and quit drinking and I live in a tent now but I am happy and only love and cherish my animals now. Thank you for this topic

My mom (A wonderful example of a Godly mother, thanks Mom), always told us kids "Can't never did anything. Try did it all." Henry Ford said "If you think you can, or if you think you can't, you're right." I currently work for a school as a bus driver and in building maintenance (about half and half). I have a goal of getting to the point where I have enough side income to be able to just drive a bus route, leaving the middle part of the day, as well as evenings, weekends, holidays, and summers open. I don't have a family, but I still think that working for yourself is a much better option, leaving more time and energy for the things I need and want to do. Not necessarily more time overall, but the flexibility of time. I haven't figured out how I'm going to do it just yet, but I have a few ideas. Now if you'll excuse me, lunch break is over, and I have to get back to my 9 - 5 (or 6 - 5, in my case...)

I quit in 2018 & now I wrangle horses at a riding stable… work 4 days a week but I’m home every night & I actually look forward to going to work & most importantly when I’m home I’m actually home not sleeping, doing laundry & getting ready to go back on the road
I'm 68, kids are gone, wife divorced me when I was 40. I'm working now 60 to 70 hours a week driving a truck after retiring for 5 years and being broke because of bad financial decisions. I hear what you're saying. I'm home every night so I'm sure there's a way to cut down on the hours but I haven't found it yet. But I like the money as I get paid by the hour.
I disagree. You don't have to quit your job. You just have to assert your priorities on yourself and employer. I work for a large corporation and I've observed that the people who are working past 40 hours a week are doing so by their own choice and ambitions. I've restricted myself to 40 hours per week for 25 years and have done well and had a good work/life balance. I make my work life balance expectations very clear to the boss and so far they have kept me and not gotten rid of me after decades. I work smart and efficiently. I don't understand the excess hours people dedicate to the job knowing the loyalty only goes one way to this day but THEY DO IT TO THEMSELVES. Nobody is really forcing it.
I mean it kind of depends on where you work. I do what you do, i work the time i've decided i'm going to work. I will never do a minute of overtime. I value the free time i have more then the money i get working extra. But i also have a decent boss that won't make my life difficult for me. This said you always have a choice, but sometimes getting fired suddenly can destroy peoples lives. It takes time to change your situation in life.
I agree with you. 31 years at a company. Great pay, 5 weeks vacation, 2 weeks sick time and 3 personal days. Paid holidays, double time plus holiday pay if I work and time and a 1/2 on Sundays that are voluntary. I only work 40 hours a week and also have a great pension coming. Plus 401k plan that I've invested in for 31 years.
@@jeffwalston8110 Eh hm. Well after 25 years maybe I will finally get laid off. Typically my company doesn't even look at performance and just eliminates "positions". I've seen 60 hr a week all star employees laid off in my time.
Spent 17 years on the road. Married a redhead with a good sense of humor. We went all over the US chasing pipelines and tanks. We moved from welding, inspection and project management. Was it hard? Straight. But we did it working together. She stayed home, paid the bills and I made it happen. We honeymooned every 4 to 6 weeks. Payed for the house, got the kids up and out on their own. Now in our 60"s, we are enjoying the life we have and the stories of our travels. It's not for everyone, but it worked for us. And that to me is the key. We worked at it. Good and bad. We could have had it easier, but we never would have had the dance.
I have some advice as a man nurse… Go into healthcare even if it’s just a CNA (nursing assistant) after just a couple months of experience you can go independent and be a nurse contractor.. I work through mediating agencies but I’m my own boss I work when and where I want I’ve lived on the road living in my van I’ve worked 2 months strait just to take 3 months off you can do what you want!.. oh and I know independent contracting CNA’s pulling in six figures
I work as an engineer for a small engineering firm & shop where I have gained a ton of skills both on the engineering & design side of things as well as welding, machining, lead work, assembly, testing and troubleshooting everything from radiation to a pneumatic valve failure. Whereas I could pretty easily go somewhere else and make a lot more money, I do not want to give up the uniqueness, flexibility & team atmosphere of this job. I am away from family 40 hr weeks but try not to work much more than that, and if I do it's from home. I try to leave for the day before I'm too exhausted so I can play with my children and off-burden my wife, but some days are hard especially as my body struggles with anxiety. I also try to take a day to work from home every once in a while when the job allows. Yes I have some problem coworkers but I have plenty more who genuinely care about me and ultimately are friends before coworkers. My boss has reminded me many times that family comes first. And because I've been with the company for over 10 years now, I have accrued additional time off and we have good benefits for a small business. So these and others are the reasons why I stay. I know people who worked 30+ years at a job they hated. That is certainly a reason to get out and try something else. But there are also 9-5 jobs that we all rely on. We wouldn't have Stihl chainsaws without engineers, parts manufacturers, assemblers and truckers working 9-5+, we wouldn't be able to get materials without the employee at Home Depot, etc.
100% Trying to figure it out. The new system is going to require us all to do this to make the new society as many thousands are fired all over the place. We need to feed ourselves.
If a man or woman can’t have enough self-discipline to not cheat when they’re away from each other, then that’s a major problem. Whether they’re at a party together or on a business trip separately, they’re still responsible for their own behaviour. It’s not the fact that they’re staying at a hotel, they’re behaving how they’re choosing to in that moment.
Ironically, it’s those 9-5 jobs that allow Cody to live the live he lives now. Take care of a large farm land with fancy tools and equipment, dress up in nice garments, make videos, share them with millions of people around the world, etc, etc.

I’m not, however, in favor of the ideology that just because it is best for some then it’s good for everyone. Nor, do I think that the system of 9-5 is a conspiratorial plan to keep us persecuted. I wish I could have shown this to my dad. I convinced him to "retire early" at 65 and he got to enjoy 4 months of retirement before he passed away. Numerous back surgeries and a perforated stomach ulcer from NSAIDs couldn't convince him.

I hired a handyman from a card in my chiropractor's office to finish the basement bathroom even though it's stuff I've done a lot before. All because I don't have the time because of my day job. The timing of all this seems like it's a message.
I agree with everything you said here, and I'm so looking for a way to work for myself, have been over a year since layoff. Brother, I still can't figure out what to do. I just feel lost and hopeless in this area, though I pray daily for wisdom and discernment and His leading in this area. Any advice?
One thing from a video of yours a LONG time ago that really resonated with me (I think you were talking food preps, buying and stockpiling some stuff) ... was the premise that you should do those types of things when times are good. In the instance that times are bad (job wise, income, world craziness, etc.), you'll be prepared. We've done that I think pretty well... but outside of food storage, etc... we've also worked towards procuring things that are beneficial to our farm and what we're building...but ALSO allows the income producing if needed. Example: Picked up a 4T mini-ex pre-runaway inflation (times were good for us, so as a hedge against inflation AND for the purposes spelled out above) and have been slowly building/fixing up an OBS 1-ton 350 to pull it. Again, work on the farm/what we're building PLUS giving me the opportunity to OWN AN ASSET that I can put to work in the future if needed. Terrified to jump out and try (worry about $$ parity of on my own vs. 9-5)... BUT, We're starting to come up with that exit strategy and see how it can happen over the next few years. Good message.

I do agree with you it's extremely important to be self-employed and to homeschool your children. When it comes to land , There is only so much land available to be bought. Lots of wealthy people are hoarding large amounts of the land. When it comes to the so called God , if the creator really did want us to be happy the creator would not allow innocent children to be violated or abused in any way!
When I proposed to my wife, we agreed to base the budget only on my income so when kids arrived she would have the freedom to stay at home. I retired two years ago at 47 from engineering to full time farming. It’s a lot less money but the time with the family is priceless. The kids have skills, knowledge, and compassion.
We're the same. We live off one income and bank the rest. We don't have kids or any bad habits. I buy nice cars and computers and she likes getting tattooed a lot. Otherwise, we don't spend much money. I spend my free time on the ranch being a good steward to my land.

I hated engineering. I hated my project managers, cocky coworkers, the ruthless schedule and taking my work home constantly. My wife and I started a cleaning company and we spend 24/7 with each other now, have great employees that we treat and pay well, and when we're home, we're home.

I made the first step to run my own company 11 months ago. It hasnt been a bed of roses but GOD has greatly blessed me and i am thankful for it! My family life has greatly improved, i get to spend time with my babies and even take them with me on the job site when its safe. We also have homeschooled our kids their whole school career so far land refused the garbage that is being forced on our kids. The point im trying to make is, stick with it and never give up. When the work slows down and the pressure is on, pray and ask GOD for help and wisdom. HE will open up the flood gates and and get you through the tough times. The risk is worth the reward.

Absolutely agree. Have been on this road for about 5 years now. Quit my job, started my own small business as a contractor/handyman, started my social media channels and my wife did the same. She makes content as well, is a seamstress and is great at computer coding. We have five children and we home school all of them, gave birth to all of them at home too. I thank God for the grace He has shown us and in giving us the will and vision to fight hard for our family and those around us. God keep you and yours. I plan on making a similar video for my channel soon.

When we found out the wife was pregnant I quit a 125k/yr job 60+hrs + commute time for s job I only make 84 but work 40 with commute time. And she gave up a good paying job to o be a stay at home mom. Had to sell my beautiful diesel truck and other toys and live a lot more frugal but it was worth it. The wife makes breakfast and dinner and I get the be there for both and help put him to sleep at night. Financially we may be a bit strained but I don’t regret it for a second. I can make more money later. Buy another truck. But I will never be able to buy the time I would have missed seeing my son grow.

The one thing was besides mom at home was dad was always around either with a home business or worked for a neighbor and was always home at mealtimes. I think it has less to do with parents being around all the time and more to do with their general culture...God, Work, God, Work...abstain from mind altering substances...abstain from most modern technology... that sort of stuff. And, with them living a mostly secluded life, we don't hear about any of the negatives if and when they do occur, unless a drunk guy gets stopped by cops in his buggy.
@@bryanburcham1381 a lot of Amish work away from home. It varies from community to community. But it’s the fact that they eat dinner together every night, work together as a family and aren’t distracted by TVs and cell phones.

Absolutely correct. From 18-28 years old I worked an average of 60-80 hours per week between the Air Force, College, and Graduate School. Spot on! My parents farmed with my grandparents. My dad's "office" was a 100 acre field within sight of his home and family. I now work in a 8-5 office setting and I am so envious of that life.
Parents have two choices. Home school their kids of be guilty of child abuse.
I am currently 6-7 months into running my own business. It was a scary transition, but I don’t think I could ever be a 9-5 employee again. I love being my own boss and having autonomy and self agency.

I type this from my tarp/hammock at 3:41 am Virginia time, i stopped participating in this broken system in early2020, and even tho i havent had a weekly check in over 3 years, i am happier than ive ever been, my life is rifle+mountain.

8 years ago my wife gave up her senior position at a large CPA firm to stay at home and raise our young boys (#2 had just been born, and now we have 3). It was scary at the time because of the massive reduction in household income but it was the best decision we’ve ever made for our family. Great advice in this video, Cody!
I worked two jobs for 25 years so my wife could stay home and raise our kids. We sacrificed to invest in our three sons and it has been the best investment we could have ever made. We struggled immensely but our boys were raised with love and they are all hard working, loving fathers and husbands. My wife now Kees the grandkids. I’m planning to retire soon and sit back and enjoy the fruits of Gods blessings on our family. Thanks for this word Cody, you’re spot on as usual.

I've had my own handyman business for 9 yrs now. My wife homeschools our 10 and 8 yr old. We try our best to put Jesus first. We live off of income and have been blessed. I would recommend this type of work to anyone who knows how to work with their hands... I'm as busy as I want to be.
I did the same thing about 5 years ago. My job is now my lifestyle, good stuff.

It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to a fireside chat from Cody and it was just as inspiring as it always has been. We just moved from a small trailer in the country to her dads house and after his passing it’s time to pick up the pieces. She has an awesome opportunity to grow her business at home now, and when the weather changes here in Ohio in a few months the cleanup begins and I plan to finally execute on the life’s work that’s been calling to me as well.

I currently work a 9-5 and a 6-10 in order to pay off my student loan debt. I’ll be all paid off by Wednesday and I’ve been debating whether to keep the evening job or not..
On the one hand my life is exactly like you describe; I’m swamped for time and come home every day without an ounce of energy to spare. My sleep, diet, and general fulfillment have all suffered..
On the other hand I feel like the extra work is necessary if I want to ever be able to break out of the rent/debt cycle. If I can save up enough for a down payment on a house I can relax after that
Keep the 6 to 10 job for 3 more months and reevaluate then. If it seems feasible and you're stacking some money in the bank then keep doing it. Also since you won't "need" that second job it may be a lot less pressure and you can probably afford to miss a day here and there if you want. Try it out for a little while and see if the extra money is worth it.
This is a quality video. As soon as my wife found out she was pregnant with our first child, she quit her job to be a stay at home mom and we plan on homeschooling our little one. The money she made can't even compare to the awesomeness of being a housewife. Pair that with my teleworking job and we have our family together nearly 100% of the time.

Love this message! My wife and I bought an old home we turned into a wedding venue. We work together and raise our son. It is very difficult but the best times we have is when we are all working on projects together. I should make a video on this because the fear of starting a business and the risk required was almost too much for us. But almost 2 years later it was the best decision we have made!
I work for a rare employer that really values their employees and encourages time off, leaving early when necessary, and pays salary. It's the reason the company is growing.
It's easier than people think, I started my small construction business when I was 25. 9 years ago this month, during the Obama administration and in Illinois. You can do it, anyone can do it. You just have to start! Good luck all!
Edit: when I started my small construction company, I looked for specialty equipment after the first year. I bought a seamless gutter machine and a couple years later I bout an air duct cleaning machine. Look into specialty services of all kinds.

My parents use to say to me all the time growing up…”You’ll never get rich working 40hrs a week for someone else.” It’s absolutely a 100% true statement. I’ve been self employed for almost 25 year. I couldn’t imagine working for someone else. That sounds like absolutely horrible to be honest. 😂 And though I’m definitely not rich. I’m very comfortable and live a great lift.

Well spoken, Cody. I work for the church and my wife is a school teacher. We have a good setup where both of our jobs are, and our childrens school is within walkingdistance from our home. This is so valuble to us! We put in full weeks of work and beeing employed, we don´t work for ourselves, in a sense. But at the same time I feel we do. We work for our community - the community where our children are growing up, a community where the other families are our friends. The other children at school and in church are our childrens friends. The well beeing of our town is directly linked to the well beeing of our family. So when it comes to what you work for, I think there is something to be said for this community aspect. But certianly, if you commute a long way and your employer just takes and takes, and has nothing to do with your family or your community, then I would fully agree - quit now and do something else. Put your family first and make all choices and sacrifices accordingly. That is what every parent is called by God to do. Greetings from Sweden!
If you think you’re too tired to play with your kids after 9-5, wait until you start your own business. I know of very few small businesses that succeed without the determination and grunt work from the owner, at least initially. Maybe you pay your dues, build up a successful business, and get to the point where you can hire help. Well now you’re the “ greedy employer, breaking the back of your workers for profits”.
Really felt this. I’ve been talking about can’t for a while now. My dad taught me you never say that. My wife and I are about to start our own business. I love your attitude. Thank you for being an inspiration.
Me and my wife went through some lean times and had to sacrifice. At 35 years old I went from a Job working for a fortune 500 company earning 160k to throwing papers on my mountain bike in the sleet and snow at 0200hrs while my wife took the car and threw her batch as well. We were both out there in the trenches together, but thank God we were together. We have always stuck together through thick and thin, good times and absolute crap. Once Ol' scratch can pitch a wedge between you and the ones you love, then you are easy prey. Stay strong, work together and grow strong together like an old oak tree.
This is exactly why I spent years figuring out a way to work for myself, and to convince my wife to move states (can't do anything or afford anything here). Going to single income, going from barely able to rent to buying land and a house, and best of all I'll get to spend time and energy with my kids.

I’m 27 and have worked for myself for the last 5 years running a small business. I’m very curious where everyone thinks working for yourself is less exhausting/stressful?
Keep working for yourself and keep growing your business and skill set of being a business owner and you will understand. Being profitable starts around the 5 years mark for most business so it makes sense why you may think it’s more work right now.
I would love to see you keep at it and reflect back to today 10 years from now. My only request is that once you do and you have your lessons learned is teach someone else so they can do it in 12 years vs your 15 years. It’s all about growth over time.
I've been at it since 2008. I wouldn't work for someone else but while I do work more than 40 hours a week, I also have complete control and I know I always have a job. There's a different kind of freedom from all this hard work, it'll work out, but there'll never be a shortage of hard work to do.

He means you have autonomy to chose when and how to work, if you want to work 60hrs+ that’s fine (but it was your choice). An employer forces you to fulfil criteria to earn money, when self employment you have greater autonomy over your time.
Stress i would argue can be harder in self employment, as you and only you are responsible for sales.

Some think that it’s not as bad as using your body daily and that may be true physically, but mentally and family wise to fight politics and the treachery of a corporate environment take a toll.

I work a retail job in nyc. The orange tool company. Im 21 and let me tell you, I'm truly grateful for this job because it is the exception to your standard job. My bosses let me do as I please, I can take as many brakes as I want, I can call out 3 times in a row and show up the next day like nothing happened, I have everyone's respect because I actually put the work in, even when not needed however I feel no sense of ownership or success. I'm confused but determined - but you're right.
They let you do that because they understand you are a high value employee, but don't let this lure you into a false sense of security. I have been a high value employee at many places that would give me a large amount of freedom because of that, but there always came a time when they started to try and take advantage of me. When I pushed back, they showed how much they cared about me. Or didn't care, rather. It is inevitable. Take your effort and place it somewhere that works better for you.

I enjoy similar privileges myself but unless I sell myself I will never move up, which is why I’m quitting next week after getting no where in ten years at my job. Always good advice Cody. Been thinking of quitting my job too, as a cook. Been doing it for 16 years, and my brother, a few friends and I have been thinking of starting up a barcade. My small town of 83 people needs buisinesses, there's only a post office, machine shop, trucking, and grain elevator.
Me and my wife are SDA and when our first child was born my wife felt the calling to quit and raise them. It was so tight for a few years and we worked so hard and started our own contracting business and doing remodels and repair work and God has blessed us abundantly. Praise the Lord. Hard work and prayer is the way.
Over 10 years ago, I had a job when I came back from living abroad that I traveled 4-5 days week in three different states as a sales manager, supervising 2-4 people that paid well. I was freshly married and a small child at home, every time my phone rang, I would cringe. I did it for nearly three years. I looked for a year, and was blessed with a great job and great bosses at a local community college, with amazing benefits, I'm not getting rich, but I have TIME which is so important to me because of family and was able to start a side gig 7 years ago. The Regents and the Cabinet leadership really honor and respect their employees, which I can say is not a common phenomenon in the workforce today.
Great advice! After my wife's cancer diagnosis, we decided she would work only 1 or 2 days per week, as a Cath lab nurse. Now she takes the Nino to school and God has increased my income to fill the gap and He has taught us that materialism is not of Him, so we have greatly reduced our spending. I'm 27 and have been working 9-5 plus overtime for 7 years with no upward growth. I haven't been saving or investing. My dream is to start my own food cart/truck business and serve affordable food in a landscape of prepared food being extremely expensive. My buddies have been in the food industry for just as long as I've been slaving away and we are starting to get it in the works. The goal is to have a farm, the mobile food business, and start a collective for others to do the same.
I've never wanted to make a bunch of money. I just want to be happy and fulfill my life with service to others. Wranglerstar, we come from very different backgrounds but your resilience and wisdom has inspired me.

I started a construction business 4 yrs ago that changed our lives for the better. I learned everything from TH-cam, lumberyard employees, and books. I often make less money yearly, but our time together as a family and quality of life is MUCH better. I don’t miss kids events, b/c I control my time and priorities. WranglerStar is 100% ACCURATE!
I only had a 9-5 for one month back in 2013.
Since then I have been making money on my own.
That month was enough to scare me from ever doing that again. It was horrible.
so I quit my 9-5 2 years ago. I started woodworking, personal training and farming was land I had. It is true that my 9-5 was ALWAYS abusive and bad leadership for 20 years across multiple companies. However this year I had to go back cause I couldn't make enough to support the family working for myself. We cut expenses over and over and over till we couldn't and I had to go back. This is a lot harder than "just do it"

This is exactly what I did almost 2 years. I paid off my house and I started my own online business. I worked for 21 years for a company that required me to work 50+ hours including weekends, I was so tired and unable to spend time with my family. I found a business I loved doing and built it up until I could make enough to pay bills. My only regret is that I didn’t do it before

Poor is a state of mind, I have never been poor broke a few times but never poor. My wife and I decided to homeschool our boys and have never regretted it. I was working full time as a Career Firefighter. As of two weeks ago I was handed a termination letter. I was told my crew did not trust me. The truth of the matter was, my crew would sit around and watch movies that I as A christian could not watch with a clear conscience. So i would focus on training, reading and doing things that would give me a better understanding of my occupation. So I have decided to focus on my small engine business until God makes it clear what the next step is. I currently have 3-4 months worth of work and am trusting God for my families future.
I'm a heavy equipment operator working 11s and I love it. Good pay, great benefits, and I'm only a few minutes from home in case there's an emergency.

I agree with you Cody. As a small business owner, I own and operate a small welding business and I am glad I made the move. Where the problem lies is, if everyone quits what they are doing no matter what the occupation that makes an already dismal supply chain even worse. As you know, anything and everything is already 2 steps from impossible to get in a timely manner. This makes living up to timelines very difficult. I try to do my best to offer my customers a quality product that is fair priced and do my best to deliver in a timely manner. I am finding it harder and harder to do that these days due to the ever diminishing labor force. Its a crazy world we live in these days. But the crazy part is that some people have been raised without any sort of financial education, and they grow up to be gamblers, debtors or live paycheck to paycheck. Thank you for saying the truth. Best job I have had was a fancy high end jewelry job and everyone was so proud of me and I hid the fact that I was miserable and drinking heavy and mean to my animals and just burnt out. I quit that job and quit drinking and I live in a tent now but I am happy and only love and cherish my animals now. Thank you for this topic

My mom (A wonderful example of a Godly mother, thanks Mom), always told us kids "Can't never did anything. Try did it all." Henry Ford said "If you think you can, or if you think you can't, you're right." I currently work for a school as a bus driver and in building maintenance (about half and half). I have a goal of getting to the point where I have enough side income to be able to just drive a bus route, leaving the middle part of the day, as well as evenings, weekends, holidays, and summers open. I don't have a family, but I still think that working for yourself is a much better option, leaving more time and energy for the things I need and want to do. Not necessarily more time overall, but the flexibility of time. I haven't figured out how I'm going to do it just yet, but I have a few ideas.
Now if you'll excuse me, lunch break is over, and I have to get back to my 9 - 5 (or 6 - 5, in my case...)
This is spot on. I spent 18 years fighting fire for various federal land management agencies living on the road 9-10 months out of the year. I quit in 2018 & now I wrangle horses at a riding stable… work 4 days a week but I’m home every night & I actually look forward to going to work & most importantly when I’m home I’m actually home not sleeping, doing laundry & getting ready to go back on the road

I'm 68, kids are gone, wife divorced me when I was 40. I'm working now 60 to 70 hours a week driving a truck after retiring for 5 years and being broke because of bad financial decisions. I hear what you're saying. I'm home every night so I'm sure there's a way to cut down on the hours but I haven't found it yet. But I like the money as I get paid by the hour.
I disagree. You don't have to quit your job. You just have to assert your priorities on yourself and employer. I work for a large corporation and I've observed that the people who are working past 40 hours a week are doing so by their own choice and ambitions. I've restricted myself to 40 hours per week for 25 years and have done well and had a good work/life balance. I make my work life balance expectations very clear to the boss and so far they have kept me and not gotten rid of me after decades. I work smart and efficiently. I don't understand the excess hours people dedicate to the job knowing the loyalty only goes one way to this day but THEY DO IT TO THEMSELVES. Nobody is really forcing it.

I mean it kind of depends on where you work. I do what you do, i work the time i've decided i'm going to work. I will never do a minute of overtime. I value the free time i have more then the money i get working extra. But i also have a decent boss that won't make my life difficult for me. This said you always have a choice, but sometimes getting fired suddenly can destroy peoples lives. It takes time to change your situation in life.
I agree with you. 31 years at a company. Great pay, 5 weeks vacation, 2 weeks sick time and 3 personal days. Paid holidays, double time plus holiday pay if I work and time and a 1/2 on Sundays that are voluntary. I only work 40 hours a week and also have a great pension coming. Plus 401k plan that I've invested in for 31 years.

@@jeffwalston8110 Eh hm. Well after 25 years maybe I will finally get laid off. Typically my company doesn't even look at performance and just eliminates "positions". I've seen 60 hr a week all star employees laid off in my time.
Spent 17 years on the road. Married a redhead with a good sense of humor. We went all over the US chasing pipelines and tanks. We moved from welding, inspection and project management.
Was it hard? Straight. But we did it working together. She stayed home, paid the bills and I made it happen. We honeymooned every 4 to 6 weeks.
Payed for the house, got the kids up and out on their own.
Now in our 60"s, we are enjoying the life we have and the stories of our travels. It's not for everyone, but it worked for us.
And that to me is the key. We worked at it. Good and bad. We could have had it easier, but we never would have had the dance.
I started my business 5 years ago and am constantly shocked at the amount of quality time I’m able to spend with my family because of it.
I have some advice as a man nurse… Go into healthcare even if it’s just a CNA (nursing assistant) after just a couple months of experience you can go independent and be a nurse contractor.. I work through mediating agencies but I’m my own boss I work when and where I want I’ve lived on the road living in my van I’ve worked 2 months strait just to take 3 months off you can do what you want!.. oh and I know independent contracting CNA’s pulling in six figures
Tell me about this please. How do you go about contracting as a nurse? I'm a RN in North Dakota and have a decade of experience in the OR.
I work as an engineer for a small engineering firm & shop where I have gained a ton of skills both on the engineering & design side of things as well as welding, machining, lead work, assembly, testing and troubleshooting everything from radiation to a pneumatic valve failure. Whereas I could pretty easily go somewhere else and make a lot more money, I do not want to give up the uniqueness, flexibility & team atmosphere of this job. I am away from family 40 hr weeks but try not to work much more than that, and if I do it's from home. I try to leave for the day before I'm too exhausted so I can play with my children and off-burden my wife, but some days are hard especially as my body struggles with anxiety. I also try to take a day to work from home every once in a while when the job allows. Yes I have some problem coworkers but I have plenty more who genuinely care about me and ultimately are friends before coworkers. My boss has reminded me many times that family comes first. And because I've been with the company for over 10 years now, I have accrued additional time off and we have good benefits for a small business. So these and others are the reasons why I stay.
I know people who worked 30+ years at a job they hated. That is certainly a reason to get out and try something else. But there are also 9-5 jobs that we all rely on. We wouldn't have Stihl chainsaws without engineers, parts manufacturers, assemblers and truckers working 9-5+, we wouldn't be able to get materials without the employee at Home Depot, etc.

If a man or woman can’t have enough self-discipline to not cheat when they’re away from each other, then that’s a major problem. Whether they’re at a party together or on a business trip separately, they’re still responsible for their own behaviour. It’s not the fact that they’re staying at a hotel, they’re behaving how they’re choosing to in that moment.

Ironically, it’s those 9-5 jobs that allow Cody to live the live he lives now. Take care of a large farm land with fancy tools and equipment, dress up in nice garments, make videos, share them with millions of people around the world, etc, etc.

I’m not, however, in favor of the ideology that just because it is best for some then it’s good for everyone. Nor, do I think that the system of 9-5 is a conspiratorial plan to keep us persecuted. I wish I could have shown this to my dad. I convinced him to "retire early" at 65 and he got to enjoy 4 months of retirement before he passed away. Numerous back surgeries and a perforated stomach ulcer from NSAIDs couldn't convince him.

I hired a handyman from a card in my chiropractor's office to finish the basement bathroom even though it's stuff I've done a lot before. All because I don't have the time because of my day job.

I agree with everything you said here, and I'm so looking for a way to work for myself, have been over a year since layoff. Brother, I still can't figure out what to do. I just feel lost and hopeless in this area, though I pray daily for wisdom and discernment and His leading in this area. Any advice?
One thing from a video of yours a LONG time ago that really resonated with me (I think you were talking food preps, buying and stockpiling some stuff) ... was the premise that you should do those types of things when times are good. In the instance that times are bad (job wise, income, world craziness, etc.), you'll be prepared. We've done that I think pretty well... but outside of food storage, etc... we've also worked towards procuring things that are beneficial to our farm and what we're building...but ALSO allows the income producing if needed. Example: Picked up a 4T mini-ex pre-runaway inflation (times were good for us, so as a hedge against inflation AND for the purposes spelled out above) and have been slowly building/fixing up an OBS 1-ton 350 to pull it. Again, work on the farm/what we're building PLUS giving me the opportunity to OWN AN ASSET that I can put to work in the future if needed. Terrified to jump out and try (worry about $$ parity of on my own vs. 9-5)... BUT, We're starting to come up with that exit strategy and see how it can happen over the next few years. Good message.
