Former Disney Cast Member here and WAY fan for about 15 years. I cried through his whole Skipper Dan song, I was laughing so so hard. It's so spot on, and I can't believe he didn't have to get a bunch of licenses from Disney to use it! I've seen you live twice, Al, and I hope to see you again soon!!!
This is one of the better interviews where he just doesn’t have to say the same thing over and over again and it’s a very specific interview that explains a very specific song.
I remember one video where the host makes a "Skipper Dan" joke and a skipper coming back from break said, "Never say 'skipper Dan' Again" and the host just started laughing.
There's a video on TH-cam where a Jungle Cruise skipper says that his name is Dan, and you can call him Skipper Dan like in the song but that he's not the guy who inspired the song.
Nice that people notice how young he looks! I'm sure it's the healthy life style :) He looks after himself and has a loving family! I love this interview, some really different questions! Great stuff :)
Daniel .Alvarez-Chao Well "Skipper Dan" is a character played by different actors, so everyone who goes on that ride is hosted by Skipper Dan, but generally not the same physical person.
Y'know, I always love how down-to-earth Al seems whenever he gets to speak candidly. It's pretty drastic compared to how spastic his performances can get at times. Also, he totally looks like Slash with that hat on, just sayin'.
Not necessarily, Steve Martin actually honed his acting and comedic timing while working at Disneyland and that was decades before he was on (then very new and experimental program) Saturday Night Live. If I remember correctly (he wrote about all of this in his autobiography Born Standing Up) other celebrities/actors(usually comedic ones) had similar stories about working at Disneyland and how it contribute a bit to their skill-set.
Out of curiosity, does Al hate being a satire musician and being silly or does he still enjoy it? I was beginning to believe the speculations about "Skipper Dan" being Al's cry for help were true
sadlobster1 Skipper Dan is a brilliant song because the protagonist doesn't realize that he's actually doing exactly what he always wanted to do: entertaining people. The only difference is scale. His downfall is that he's eager for people to like him and know who he is and, once again, he doesn't realize that he's got that too. He may not be world renowned, but the locals who visit the park frequently would certainly recognize him, if only he could see it.
bartsimpson83 It's like that one Futurama quote says. What's important in life is that people care about you. Whether it's a whole crowd or just one, die-hard fan
+ sadlobster1 Well, he puts hours and hours of his time into it of his own free will, and he has said that his father raised him to believe that being successful meant doing something that made you happy. So, I would say that he likes it.
Pull in a few favors? Man, I know any Jungle Skipper would have swiped Weird Al a Jungle costume if he asked for one. I'm actually surprised that he didn't recieve a costume in the mail every day since the song was released!
Heh, yeah. I totally understand, and I loved the song. I'm glad the Tour Guides loved it. And as a struggling actor, I relate to the others who didn't like it. I just slow it down and sing it as a sad song. But it's still great, still poignant. Weird Al's still a master.
@TheNewThirteen Um... Actually, no. This is a style-parody of Wheezer as a WHOLE (for the most part), but its mainly a style-parody of one of their songs, "Pork & Beans". But, seriously, what connection does Wheezer have? Or was it just a random pick?
I never thought skipper dan poked fun at anyone. Anyone doing repetative things all day can attest to the toll it takes and do their job adequatly. And for strugling actors it is a tale of how you can do everything right and life still will not treat you kindly. If skipper dan had wanted to major in business instead his life could still be miserable and he could still be stuck at a dead end job even though he did everything right.
Or, just being a savant. He was Valedictorian at 16, he's written about how awkward it was in school to be the oldest kid in all his classes... Imagine being 16 in a *University*. No wonder the other students started calling him "weird".
In fairness, "Skipper" on the Jungle Cruise ride isn't the absolute lowest an actor can get. In fact it's probably a pretty steady paycheck. So what is? What's the absolute lowest job on the acting totem pole? Those mystery dinner things come to mind.
You sound like a struggling actor to me... Sure the song is 'bittersweet' but I think Disney has enough sense of humor not to sue someone who did not wrong them in any way. Besides, they would have no legal standing. Also, it's pretty much a known fact that his curls are real.
The only thing that still needs to be asked: WHY DID HE PICK WHEEZER?! I mean really! What connection could Wheezer have to the JUGLE CRUISE RIDE?!?!?!?! IT'S NOT EVEN MENTIONED! And now I know I have to reserach! God, it's school all over again...

This is the only Weird Al song that's actually gotten me to cry.
From laughter, right?
Mine is Headline News. It's so beautiful.
“You Don’t Love Me Anymore” is the most romantic song ever
@@yphonichs "And when... He finally came to, he saw... That Mr. Happy was missing!!!"

As a former Skipper, I think he does feel the pain. Thanks, Al.
Weird Al is a national treasure
Interesting how in every interview he concentrates on the interviewer instead of looking everywhere else like most do.
yes, the castmembers love this song...daniel at the jungle cruise is now skipper dan!
Could you imagine a Weird Al themed theme park?
I'd go on the Stuck in a Closet with Vanna White ride SO MUCH.
2 of the the funniest comments and still no likes? what is this world coming to? lol
I'd go on the Jackson Park Express
I didn’t know I needed this
Vanna White now, or Vanna White when he wrote it? These details matter.
I will go on the Amish paradise ride or maybe the Wayne's world 2 ride
I remember one video where the host makes a "Skipper Dan" joke and a skipper coming back from break said, "Never say 'skipper Dan' Again" and the host just started laughing.

It’s always been one of my favorite Weird Al songs!
"He who is tired of Weird Al is tired of life."
- Homer Simpson
-Sophocles
- George Carlin
I want Al to star in the Disney "Jungle Cruise" Movie... as Skipper Dan....
Script needed...
now that cool
Challenge accepted 🤣🤣😊😂 (maybe)
Looks like they dropped the ball. The George of the Jungle movie at least had his cover on the album.
Nice that people notice how young he looks! I'm sure it's the healthy life style :) He looks after himself and has a loving family! I love this interview, some really different questions! Great stuff :)
Skipper Dan is a truly brilliant, poignant song.
i love weird al, he seems so real and just really into doing his job for not only a job but for fun.
Disney need to have a ride where the soundtrack done by Weird Al
Holy crap I think Skipper Dan was my tour guide too. This is so cool. I know the guy weird al wrote a song about!
Daniel .Alvarez-Chao Well "Skipper Dan" is a character played by different actors, so everyone who goes on that ride is hosted by Skipper Dan, but generally not the same physical person.
I saw him Friday night at the King Center. What a good show he put on!
Fiftey one? Dang! It's been 30 years and he's STILL funny! Props to Weird Al. That's impressive.
Y'know, I always love how down-to-earth Al seems whenever he gets to speak candidly. It's pretty drastic compared to how spastic his performances can get at times.
Also, he totally looks like Slash with that hat on, just sayin'.
Love him so dearly.
seen him 3 times in concert. funny guy
little did he know, disney would hire him to be a voice actor for a television show within the next 10 years. neat.
@The38DODGE You know, for his age he still looks really young. I was surprised to find out he is that age.
I wanna go on space mountain with Al!!
@ThatGamer360
"Skipper Dan" is an original song. It's not a style parody of Weezer. It's just the style of Weird Al's music.
This song feels like something Squidward would sing
8 years later to prove you stupid.
It's a Doors style parody
@@masonwarner6853 Wow, you're so cool.
It is a style parody of mid-2000s alt rock. Not just Weezer, but Bowling for Soup as well.
I want to go to either Disneyland or Disneyworld and sit next to Al on one of the rides.
as a former cm i LOVE this and can totally relate! thanks wierd al XD
I’d imagine the struggling actors had a negative reaction because they said it hits too close to home and is entirely accurate.
I'd never even heard of the ride before I heard this song. There's a whole industry of people I didn't know I needed to feel sorry for.
Not necessarily, Steve Martin actually honed his acting and comedic timing while working at Disneyland and that was decades before he was on (then very new and experimental program) Saturday Night Live.

@WilmeriosW Yeah, Al looks exactly the same as he did back in '79 when he first started out.
Well, except for the mustache.
I left Orlando the day before July 21!!
Out of curiosity, does Al hate being a satire musician and being silly or does he still enjoy it?
I was beginning to believe the speculations about "Skipper Dan" being Al's cry for help were true

I thought so, I never believed Skipper Dan was a "cry for help," like some others seem to think
sadlobster1 He has made statements in recent years that he's very happy with where he is in life.
LOVE THE SONG...ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A SKIPPER ON THE JUNGLE CRUISE RIDE....AND MY NAME IS DAN.............
AL .GOT IT RIGHT .........
Weird Al Rules!!!!!
Oh wow. That's not the costume I wore when I was a Skipper. Is that an older one, or is it an updated one?
Pull in a few favors? Man, I know any Jungle Skipper would have swiped Weird Al a Jungle costume if he asked for one. I'm actually surprised that he didn't recieve a costume in the mail every day since the song was released!
kipper Dan is a cute song.
haha Weird Al, brilliant!
I have to say... as a theater major... YUP.
I was hoping he would have asked about speed the plow and how Madonna was in the original Broadway production of it.
Heh, yeah. I totally understand, and I loved the song. I'm glad the Tour Guides loved it. And as a struggling actor, I relate to the others who didn't like it. I just slow it down and sing it as a sad song. But it's still great, still poignant. Weird Al's still a master.

I enjoyed this interview, but I hope you have a new camera (operator?) by now. It was constantly blurring and refocusing.
I just need to point out the fact that this is episode 277. :D
Wow... his voice is different.
I'm not into rollarcoasters, either.

Damn...I miss Ricky Brigante on ITM
Had to rewind at 5 mins and something I thought Al Saud he has a son named Yoda I was like AFTER HIS SONG but I miss heard 🎉getting oolds lane af
Skipper Dan: when you've become an NPC in your own life.
@WilmeriosW and his daughter is just seven . how young is his wife then ?
He's a vegetarian, I'm sure that's a big contributor to him looking so good for his age.
Hey how are you doing
@123guitarest He's gotta pay the bills some way.... A lot of people hate their jobs, but they can't just quit lol.
He looks like he's trying to be Isla from H3
Weird AL, the example of parents making a son get a degree that he didn't want. He later broke away and found himself, his true calling!
Or, just being a savant. He was Valedictorian at 16, he's written about how awkward it was in school to be the oldest kid in all his classes...

I think it's spelled mystery diners, but you definitely have a point
Pirate Dinner show also in Anaheim coincidentally

That Gamer Is wheezer famous for making melancholy upbeat songs?
fuc,funny
GO RUNNING WITH CHICKEN!
Aren't all actors struggling? with something?
How is Disney the artist of this? O_O
looks like tommy lee
lol he really weird talk no need to breath

He who is Simpsons quote is unoriginal unlike STRANGE ALBERTA YANKEEVICCLES
Skipper Dan, as played by Dwayne Johnson... a not-so-failed actor. LOL
@123guitarest he cant get a job anywhere else
Such a boring interview. Interviewer asks all the wrong questions. Give me some time with this guy.
This song is depressing! I hope Disney sues the curls out of his fake perm!!
Well, Disney can take a joke.
P.S. *his perm's real*
His hair is lovely and real, dummy.
