- Today, we install a Harley-Davidson LED fuel level display on a Sportster 1200. The low fuel sensor in the tank is replaced with a new level sensor and the display is part of a unit that replaces the front brake master cylinder cap.
The compact wire cutter and stripper that we use in the video can be ordered on our site:

Hey I know this video is 3 years old, but I found it extremely helpful. I have a 2017 HD 1200T Sportster Superlow that does not have a fuel gauge. I went to my first motorcycle rally in Puerto Penasco Mexico this past weekend and had to keep a very close eye on my mileage by using my trip meter. I think having a fuel gauge might have lessened my anxieties about running out of gas and being a burden on the folks I was riding with. The way you explained everything step by step, makes me think I could do this repair to my bike….maybe 😊
You can for sure. Thanks for watching
Perfect video quality. Great tutorial. Refreshing to see someone do a quality job while commenting on the attention to detail.
Thank you and glad it was helpful. Donations accepted at Jeb@tappedoutcycles.com (PayPal)
Great video 👍thanks for your great lighting and information and for not playing loud music...keep up the great work 👍 you have the best how to work on your Harley videos that I have ever seen...👍👍👍💯💯💯⚡⚡⚡🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🏁🏁🏁
Thank you so very much for the kind words and I'm glad you found it so helpful. We would definitely make more video if we could find a way to monetize things or money wasn't an issue. The problem for us is that it takes so much time and we're limited on that.
I absolutely love mine on my 2018 forty eight. I have a 2 inch tank lift and oddly enough it is still insanely accurate! I know the 2014+ wants to use the pigtail but I didn't have to on mine.
A little tip to get the one way washers off without making a booboo is to pry it up a small amount and then snip it with wire cutters or a small tin snip and it will come right off. Whatever works best at the time!
Very cool... Thank you for the sharing the "one way washer" trick and I hope you found the video helpful.
Thats a 10/10 instructional video thanks mate.
So glad you found it useful!
Tip, just twist the tail off the zip tie with lineman’s pliers. Smooth finish.
Great video! I feel confident enough to install mine now and I am kinda sure how to install my Digital Gear Indicator for my 2015 Iron but if there is any possible way you guys can make a video of that you would have no idea how grateful people would be.
The orange wire off the harness that comes from the sending unit that mounts on the master cylinder at the front brake is a power wire that has to be connected to a switched power supply. My 2011 XL1200N Sportster didn't need to use the wiring harness that is shown in this video. I just pulled out the resistor in the harness and plugged in the new harness and ran the orange wire to a white striped orange wire that went to what looked like an accessory plug that was under the side cover. My low fuel warning light still works but that thing comes on way to soon. There is still a lot of fuel in my tank when that comes on. I like this gage. It looks good and I think is more accurate than the warning light. HD could do a little better with the wiring instructions, like telling you that orange wire is for switched power.
All true
Yes brother it’s good information to me also cause my 2017 super low have no show fuel lower indication so it’s helpful to me.
Happy it helped out
The fuel gauge should be a basic inclusion with any bike!!! And not an optional extra imho…20grand bike and no fuel gauge wow….but good video though!!!
I recon it’s a waste of money, and takes away the personal bond a man has with his pride and joy lol but all I do is just reset my (A) odometer when I fill up I usually get an average 150 klms until the fuel light comes on but even if “forget” which I haven’t I know I got about 90mins of riding before the light comes on. I use (B) odometer for my oil changes. But a cool project
Excellent job and video...thanks for sharing!!
Thank you for watching
Nice job on the install and explaination of the making it happen. I'm looking at an 883, or, a 1200 Sportster. Definitely want a fuel gauge on the bike! Doug🏍️👍
Glad you found it useful. Would love to make more but it's just too time consuming without a way to monetize them.
Very well done, well explained, you could go on as a teacher
Thank you much... would love to do more but it's very time consuming and doesn't pay 😎
the seat locks that way because the momentum of the bike is going to push your body backwards... keeping the seat locked in... if it was the other way around... you'd end up with your seat coming off the post.
Is it possible to add a fuel gauge to a 2005 Harley sportster 1200 custom ????
Great video and super detailed.
Anthony Petrillose thanks for watching
Thank you for posting this awesome video - I’m about to do a similar upgrade to my 2008 XL1200L, except I’m replacing the “classic” analog speedometer with the newer replacement version and will also need to swap out the fuel sensor/sending unit...you have a new subscriber.
Oh very cool... thanks for following and we hope the video was helpful.
I added the HD Speedometer with analog tach and it is awesome to be able to see what the gas level is, what your RPMs are and the speed all in one unit.
Me puedes ayudar con elink de dónde lo adquiriste por favor
Can I do the same on my 2003 VTX1800C , is fuel injection.
great video and then doesn't work of the original low fuel waring light after instal the Digital Fuel Gauge kit? thanks so much
1:21 great video but my kit supplied by Harley did not come with the jumper leads to connect to the diagnostics plug. I only have the orange wire to connect but have no idea where too
It's been a long time since I've done this kit but I believe the orange wire goes to anything that is 12 V switched hot. Meaning once you turn the key on whatever power source you usw should be 12vdc
Before starting this procedure did you do anything else, such as pull the fuse or disconnect the battery or put the key switch to ON or anything else (to disengage the alarm, for example)? Thanks.
I can't find the plug where the gauge harness plugs into. 🤔
This is an incredibly detailed video, super helpful, I do have a question, if I were to change the tank later on, and the fuel pump fit the new tank would the gauge still work?
Thank you and yes it would. We would make more videos if we could find a way to fund them.
hey man what was the amazon link for the flush cutter and stripper combo?
On our website now
Where's the link to those clippers/strippers?

I am assuming this will not work for the 2006 carb model sportster XL 1200C with the standard petcock assembly.
Correct.
Could the gauge be used on an 06 carburetor model?
First year out and i've ran out twice. One time i was going down the highway and boom died. Great video tanks i mean thanks..
Hi.. Great video and super detailed. Please send me the link of the led digital gauge you installed. very nice and not in the way gauge hahaha. hope you reply
I have an 2004 Sportster custom with no fuel and I am obsessed with with Fuel gauge.. only issue is that it will not fit my bikes master cylinder. If I get a new master cylinder for a more recent bike would it fit? Or what else would I have to buy? Thanks so much! Great video!
It'll only work on Fuel Injected models
Is it possible to use a touring fuel gauge instead of the led one with this kit?

I know this is old but was there fuel in the tank when I removed the lines of so does it leak or not to worry?
I have fitted this followed your video, on a 2017 iron 883, but I have the fuel light staying on now , is there something I have forgot, thanks
Possibly the floating sensor is rubbing on the pump housing and not allowing it to register. You could try shaking the bike aggressively to see if it frees up. Otherwise, remove assembly and inspect.
This is provided all electrical connections are proper. Inspect that first.
@tappedoutcycles2757 when you mean the floating sensor Is that the part that has replaced the low fuel light float
Thanks
I have a 2006 883 custom, is It the same install? Same parts and connections? Or because it's a carburated model It has diferences? Thanks
This is for FI bikes only so it will not work on yours
Quick question, I'm not a big fan of the digital display, I like gauges more, could one wire it to a gauge instead of the display or will that not work?
So long as the voltage input calibration was correct, it should work
I´m on my way to buy a 2004 1200 sportster and I´m already looking at upgrades hehe. Does this also work on the 2004 model?
Congrats. This works on the fuel injection models only.
Does the tank have to be empty before performing the install? Thanks! Great, helpful video!!
umm duh
Great video. Used it to install on my 2007 Harley Davidson Sportster 883. Everything is hooked up properly but no lights on the gauge. I know I have to the the ECM module flashed to get the low fuel indicator like to work properly on the speedometer. If I get the ECM module flashed, will this also light up the gas gauge?
Awesome job! Try hooking direct power to the display to ensure its not a faulty display.
@@tappedoutcycles2757 Tried that as well -- nothing.
@@stevenwassom4699 is the ground side hooked up? The lights are pretty dim and blue in color
@@tappedoutcycles2757 Now that is a good question. I disconnected the fuel sender resistor assembly from the connector and connect the fuel gauge connector in its place. I spliced-in and soldered the red wire to the orange/white wire coming from the rear taillight assembly. What would be the "ground side"? I appreciate your responses.
@@stevenwassom4699 it’s been awhile since I’ve completed one but I think It picks up its ground from the connector where you had to bypass the resistor. Use a jumper lead to go to ground and see if that works any magic.
Should this work on an 883 1998 hd? Thanks
I have a 2013 XL883L ordered the kit for my bike but did not get the pigtail. What color wire on the diagnostic port do I splice it into? Wire colors in DLC port is black, green and grey. Stuck in this point. Can’t find diagram on internet. Please help stuck at this point after all was done. Thank you.
It's been awhile since I installed one but you'll need to pick up a "key on" hot wire. I'd say it's grey out of those 3 but not for sure. Just check with a voltmeter. Thanks for watching and I hope it was helpful.
Great video! Will it fit for old 1987 883 sportster? Thanks
Hi. I have a question. Where can I buy the fuel gauge?
I installed this fauge on my 2020 roadster. It work correctly the first day I rode it, but now its just flashing on and off with the low fuel light even though it's full.
Sounds like the float assembly came apart internal to the tank.
@Tapped Out Cycles it doesn't appear to have fallen apart. But It does have corrosion on the sensor itself. Not sure if that's the problem though.
Will this fit on my 05 Sportster i have no gauge at all
shame about using the crimper .. ah well to each ya own right :D feels odd tho to put more on a HD that can break ^.^ .. sry had to .. they have OFC gotten better ..well i hope they have
I did this exact job on my 2015 Sportster Iron XL 883N and got a B2119 DTC which says" Fuel pump output overload. fuel pump failure or short to ground in fuel pump power circuit." But I still have my Vance and Hines FP3 tuner plugged in and the bike shut off 1/2 mile from house. cleared the code and it cranked and run till I got back to he house and it died again. got same DTC code again B2119. How do I fix this problem? I connected the orange wire to the red( looks red to me) with yellow stripes, the other wire sets are red and with blue stripes and black solid. Display seems to work fine. Am I going to have to remove pump again to check wiring? Won't run long after clearing code out. Help please! My connection harness doesn't have Red with orange wires, it has red with blue and red with yellow wires and the last set are black wires in the connection harness
Jeff Tilghman you are just trying to connect to a keyed hot wire so check with a volt meter. I would try disconnecting the orange wire first and see if that resolved the issue before pulling the pump out to inspect
I have the 07 and it’s not working.
What is the fuel tank on this?
This tank is a 4.5 Gallon Tank. I watched this video a few months ago and added the HD Speedometer that also shows the fuel level so I did not need the Break Fluid Reservoir cap.
Where can I buy this digital fuel gauge kit you installed on this sportster? I would like to do this install on my 2012 Sportster 48.
75031-09 Is the Harley Part number. Thanks for watching.
Hello i have my 883 sporster bur my Fuel gauge is always flashing. By any chance do you know what could be the problem???
Sounds like the float that slides up and down is probably stuck. Perhaps rubbing on the wiring or in a bind.
If this gauge reads inaccurately, what is the likely cause? Mine will read full until I’m almost empty and then it’ll only go down 1 notch.
Justin Tellez the float is likely getting hung up. Remove the fuel pump and insure it moves freely the whole travel. In the event it does move freely but is still reading inaccurate, I’d assume the resistor has failed
Tapped Out Cycles I will give that a go, thank you for the good info and the quick reply
Alguien me puede ayudar con el link de dónde lo puedo comprar para una sporter por favor
I know this is an older video, but I really need to do this. I can't find a link to the gauge kit and the site is Temporarily Closed. Can anyone help me out?
Harley Davidson has them on their website
I run a 2002 883 Hugger. Can this be used in my bike?
gcdiver this works on all fuel injected sportsters but unfortunately not carburetor units.
Tapped Out Cycles thanks for the reply. Ride safe!
Does this fit street bob 2014 dyna
As far as I know, it's only for the FI XL models
Hello from Sweden! Does this item fit a H-D Sportster -06? I don’t have the fuel pump inside the tank etc.. Great video btw 🙏🏼
Yes it should be compatible. Thank you for checking out the video and follow along our journey on Facebook and Instagram
It doesn’t fit 06 because 06 last year of carburetor 07 went fuel injection.i have a 06 I’m trying to come up with a way for fuel gauge most likely I need 07 and up tank and modify so the pump doesn’t work but gauge does.don’t need pump on 06
Does this work on xg750a (street rod)?
Did you find something that works?
How about a link or a part number for this kit?
75031-09 Is the Harley Part number. Thanks for watching.
Where did u perchase the fuel guage?
Vtwin mfg or straight from HD as it's an OEM part
How much does install cost?
It takes about 2.5 hours so for us it's $139 x 2.5
Will this fuel gauge work on a 2008 xl1200c? Thanks
Yes it will
it work on a 2017 iron 883?
Yes it does. Any fuel injected
Would've been nice if y'all gave the info on where to get the kit and who makes it?
Duly noted. We’ll keep that in mind on future videos
I love that they responded to you, but still didnt tell us where they got it.
How long did it take to fit?
Maybe 2 to 3 hours
Why won't this kit work on the 2004?
If the bike is carburetor it will not work because the unit isn't equipped with a fuel pump.
@@tappedoutcycles2757 I'm embarrassed. I didn't think of that. Thanks.

I have a 2020 iron 883, and do not have the pig tail connector. I am being told by the instructions to connect my orange to an orange white wire located by my rear light connector... cannot find.. please help?
The pigtail is a separate part number and piece that plugs into the four or six pin diagnostic port underneath the left side cover
@@tappedoutcycles2757 ok, so this orange wire is just for power correct? So I can find a wire on that stock connector that has 12volts ignition and just splice into that then correct?

Hi. What is the part number or manufacturer number?
There are 2 different kits to use. V-Twin Mfg offers one kit and Harley offers their own. Which one do you prefer?
75031-09 for black and electrical connection is 72673-11
Hope this helps, it isn't cheap but it's my favorite upgrade on my 48 especially with such a small tank! Also, it says you need the electrical connection for 2014+ but I didn't need it on my 2018. I think the connection was like $23 canadian.
@@doctord1296 I didn't know Vtwin made one too, but it turns out you are right! It looks like they are more expensive than the one I got from HD. I paid $360 or so for mine, the Vtwin manufacturing ones I am seeing are $450-600 but I am sure it would be cheaper to buy directly from Vtwin!
