I fished Lake Marie many times as a kid with my Dad and my brother in the 60’s. Always a memory-maker. I will miss John Prine with the memories of Lake Marie.
The one in Twin Lakes is actually called Lake Mary..not sure why John changed it to Lake Marie

My Grandma from Alabama says butt ugly in the very same manner John Prine does. It actually made me smile. I had to rewind bc I thought I misheard him, instead hearing my grandma’s accent. Nope. Butt ugly. Funny! I believe it’s a generation thing but chill out Frankie Bean, they’re just words said in a casual conversation. :):):):)
I worked as a librarian at Twin Lakes WI. But not when John Prime stopped in. Would have loved to have been the one to help him out.

This song was the break-up song for a long term relationship. My ex actually gave me the album and Lake Marie wailed in my house during that time. MARIE!!!!!
i saw him play live, in a theater type place, with great acoustics. he finished the show with this song, and it was simply stunning.

@@chrismathes3647 I lived in Twin Lakes for 6 years and lived 10 from there for the last 25 years. It's Lake Mary, I fish it all the time. I did get my answer a few weeks back. Prine changed it to Lake Marie because it made the words flow better.
@@Rockandrollgeerage I thought you were asking about the song title. Growing up there it was always known as Lake Mary. Small town, teachers always told us the story of the song as kids. Lots of great band played there back in the day even as a kid I got to go to the Edgewater on Lake Mary before it was tore down. Acts like Nugent and Reo Speedwagon played there and the Wonder Bar back in the 70s/80s. Now its just condos and the only music is country thunder...sad

John forgot to mention the guitar intro to Lake Marie is taken straight from Van Morrisson's Madame George. Still great song regardless.

I don't get the history part: why would the indigenous people that lived there name the lakes after white babies they found? First, surely they had already named the lakes? Second, if they found the babies how did they knowwhat their names were?

@@Robotsllew lake marie is in illinois and he mentions the lake Marie forest preserve...but the first verse is actually about Lake Mary in twin lakes, Wisconsin. (Was at both locations today!) (Live in Wisconsin).

Love John and love this song. But one thing has always bothered me. If the Indians had never seen white kids before and the girls being babies....How did they know their names? The babies couldn't have told them. They wouldn't have understood English anyway? There is no way they would have named the Lakes in English

I love the song (and all of his work) but if you check a map, the Twin Lakes in southern Wisconsin are Lake Elizabeth & Lake MARY, not Marie... ????? If anyone knows what's up with this, PLEASE comment.
AJ Marker probably just changed the name to Marie to add the extra syllable. Great song though
Marie fits better with the lyric.
Marie is French for Mary. There is another lake just across the Illinois border, on the Chain O' Lakes, named Lake Marie. I think all these things are related.
The book might have called it Lake Marie. He says he wanted a true story, but it might be only a legend from a book about Twin Lakes.
AJ Marker you are correct. I grew up on Lake Marie but it’s in Illinois on the Fox Chain of Lakes.
The sing still confuses me. 😩 is the couple murdered? The babies? It sounds like the narrater is both the one that dies and sees it in the news. Someone explain it to me like a first grader

I think each verse describes a completely separate event, but all of them occurred on the shores of Lake Marie. And I’m not sure if Prine intended this, but each verse loosely deals with one of the 3 big events in life - birth, marriage and death. But maybe I’m reading too much into it.
