One inebriated evening, twenty years ago back in grad school, a classmate of mine was like, "Hey, listen to this song." It was "In Spite of Ourselves" and my musical world changed forever. RIP Mr. Prine. Our hearts are broken.

The other day I put some Prine in my lunchbox to listen to on the way to work. I knew he wasn't good. Getting ready the next morning, I heard the sad news. I couldn't even listen to any of his music or news on the radio. Wow, I knew it was gonna be a long day. After eight miserable hours, it was time to go home. Popped in John's Live On Tour cd and when it got to Lake Marie I cranked it. A beautiful sad song about a whole of things. Mostly loss. I shed a long tear and a smile came on my face. Thanks John. Thanks for making me laugh, cry, smile, make a sad day sunny and being a friend when no friend was to be found.

John Prines voice aged like a fine wine. Always enjoyed his later versions of old songs he did when young because of he had the perfect amount of hasp in his voice. Seemed like his picking got softer but cleaner as his voice got more gravel to it.

It's really amazing how I 'found' John Prine after about 25 years, probably more. I live in a very rural area where radio reception is hard to come by. There was a local blue grass/folk music station in the very next town that played no 'popular music' in the mid to late 70's. Then, the radio station went out of business and I forgot but didn't quite forget about John Prine who I always heard on a daily basis it seemed, on that station----him and John Fahey, Bill Stanes and others. Then, when I about gave up on TV---(maybe have it in the background as 'backlighting only on mute) back a few years or so ago....lo and behold, either I had an 'aha' moment and remembered Prine and looked him up or maybe he just appeared, don't remember now. Just glad and almost saddened in a way that so many years went by that I didn't allow myself the luxury of keeping a treasure like John Prine in my 'songbook' of life...better late(r) than never...

I had heard of Prine but never really focused on his music. One day I came home from work on a Saturday, dropped on the couch to nap, and turned the TV on and Austin City Limits was on and here was John Prine right after 'Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings' came out. I planned to nap, but ended up sitting up, buying his CD and then many more, and over the years taking my kids to a few of his shows when he came to Colorado. I caught him late in his career, and he had many fantastic songs, but holy hell that Lost Dogs album just clicked for me.

The songwriting of Prine's first two albums and even the third and fourth albums were sooo much better than his later stuff. In the beginning, you felt like God was talking to you thru a Prine song. Likely, he was still influenced by the taking of psychedelics in the beginning. I pretty much considered him godlike in the beginning but watching his health deteriorate and seeing him put on weight all which left more of a sentimental, nostalgic feel to a concert as opposed to a religious experience, I thought he made a mistake in his addiction to touring when he really couldn't "tame the horse" anymore during a performance.
Recent fans, I am sure, would argue but I go way back

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The Rock and Roll HoF is first and foremost a commercial endeavor not a historical record of great bands and singers. It's to draw in the visitors to make money. ABBA is in long before many great bands and John Prine. It's more like the Hollywood walk-of-fame than any real HoF.

Except that Bill Murray (don't get me wrong as I'm a fan) is cleverly aloof in nearly all of what he does while Prine was lovable (and seemingly approachable) in all of what he created.

JP mentioning Leo Kotke around 2:50 is actually pretty hilarious…and LK is so under appreciated im not sure his reference makes sense to everyone
But Leo is a Jedi black belt on an acoustic guitar…you don’t even have to understand music to appreciate how skilled he is. So it’s kinda funny picturing a not so confident John Prine coming on behind Leo.
If 1 guy is a wizard and 1 guy can’t tune his guitar that’s probably quite the contrast….but obviously John was coming with a world of depth and other attributes to make up for it

David Alan Coe always credited Steve Goodman for that song. Sad that JP didn't get that recognition soon.

*Happy Birthday John.* I'm sure it's not a coincidence that "Linda Goes To Mars", would be the tune for this. considering that song made Bill laugh during a bout of depression. Also, I knew Kristofferson gave John his break, but I did not know that Paul Anka was there. I'm not surprised, because he knows good music. Anka was the one who got the ball rolling to get The Beatles to the U.S. their firs time here. RIP Steve. With this hectic world, and everyone crying out for help, God obviously needed you to sing songs for Him, to soothe His ears from all of us whiny humans down here.

A Florida Son John has told the story writing “you never even called me by my name” with Steve Goodman in Paul Anka’s hotel room. I seem to recollect him saying he told Steve to take all the credit for the song he didn’t wAnt his name on it. Goodman made some money with the song and I think bought John a new car with his share of the royalties. Someone will correct me if I’ve made an error in the story.

      T. Anderson As I recall the story, he showed up at his house with a truck and a brand new Wurlitzer jukebox which Prine still has and treasures.

Bill Murray looks a little depressed. I love it when things like this just pop up on TH-cam man. I'm a fan of both of these gentlemen. And the movie Razor's Edge was not a financial success. But for some reason it's one of my favorite Bill Murray movies. Maybe because he was an unlikely choice for the role. And to me he stuck it. I loved his character in that. Heartbreaking movie And it introduced me to the upanishads. John Prine, we were like returning astronauts. That's funny. I saw him live in Vail, Colorado. Awesome show
