    What Yahtzee says about writing, being a writer who wants to be surprised by their own story, is absolutely how I feel about writing. There's something elating and inspiring when the characters become their own on the page.

  • @4Gehe2

    They do still use lighthouses. Even with radars, GPS and trackers you still need to be able to verify your location on a map. This is because there are magnetic distortions and other issues that can fuck up your navigation system(s). In a proper rain or a storm your radar is basically useless and enough rocking can throw your GPS off slightly. Also the lighthouses are used to mark the lanes. The fact you are on a open sea doesn't mean you can just sail where ever the fuck you want.
    There are so many mandatory navigation safety things you need to do while sailing a huge ship, because when they go down they cause a lot of destruction. AND! You need to know exactly where the cargo is to be able to reclaim it.

    I'm with Gabe. The platforming in Mirror's Edge wasn't that hard.

    • @silverwar360
      @silverwar360 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tony Gregory which is mostly related to the fact that the game isnt very hard. they gave you alot of space for making mistakes (ie jumping too early).
      however pinpoint jumping wont be possible thus making the maximum level of difficulty (making jumps stupidly narrow) wont work as good as in 2d platformers for example. imagine ME with the tight jumps of a smw hack :P
      so yeah. i think yahtzees point stands but ME is a subideal example. maybe some jumping puzzles in HL1 are a better one (i remember it taking ages to learn some of the speedrun tricks simply because i keep losing the feeling of the space that my "feet need" to stand on something)

    • @slothsong080
      @slothsong080 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      iHaku Well for me, I'm able to get use to length and height of the character's jump by jumping around a few times. For good measure, I even try at different speeds. This at least gives a better understanding of the area of where the character will jump. As for the area of where the character's feet are, there's never really been a game that's got the area right anyway. The character's feet are usually treated like a circle. This is the reason why in a game where you can see the character's feet they when standing on a overhang, giving the illusion that the character is holding themselves on one foot.

      Agreed. Yahtzee's argument is kinda nonsensical since you actually can see your feet in Mirror's Edge and there are several other cues that increase your spatial awareness in that game. What's he talking about maybe makes sense when you're playing something like Half Life.

      Anton Adelson Yeah, I never really understood the fps platformer hate, even when you can't see your feet they're typically directly below you at all times, so just make sure you aim for just under the screen.
      Half-Life, Dying Light, Mirror's Edge, Dishonored and so many other has me jumping about onto things and I always landed fine.

    • @Pynter_
      @Pynter_ 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we're in first person irl and we can jump around on things just fine without seeing our feet.

    • @beganfish
      @beganfish 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anton Adelson He only complains about them since he was shit at it, everyone I know that played that game had no trouble and liked it. you also can't see you feet in real life parkour and thats harder. He just makes up random excuses about why he could not do it to wave the fact he was shit at the game, he much prefers Assasins Creed press a to parkour style.

    • @AntonAdelson
      @AntonAdelson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      beganfish I have a little surprise for you: you definitely can see your feet while tracing (doing parkour) :)) (example: do a decent precision jump)
      But, yeah, maybe Ben is a bit spacially challenged? I totally get his complain in games where it's impossible to see the feet: then there's no point of reference and, as a traceur with 4 years of experience, I have to say this is unrealistic and very uncomfortable.
      But in Mirror's Edge the feet are very visible. So one can TRAIN in the game like in real life parkour. Which explains the mad precision jumps some gamers make time after time (when they make hour long run-throughs).
      I hope that with time Ben will get better and will like it for what it is! After all, I agree with pretty much all of his other gaming opinions. o.O

    Brontosaurus was never a thing.
    A scientist discovered dinosaur skellingtons and thought he'd found a completely new dinosaur and he called it the brontosaurus. Turns out he'd found two skellingtons near each other and human-centipeded them together to form something new. So the Brontosaurus never existed, the brachiosaurus is the one with the long neck. I figure kids books still say brontosaurus because it's easier to say.

    I've got to say, I'm pretty sure that first person platforming/parkour is a problem that is unique to Yahtzee. There are entire game modes in games like GMod and Counter Strike dedicated to platforming, so it's clearly not that much of an issue. If you have to see your feet to effectively move around IRL, I think you have a bit of a coordination issue.

    The abandonware question from my point of view: If it is still possible to acquire the game in a working fashion legally through purchase, then do so. If there is NO way to legally acquire the game via purchase, then I see no reason why a piece of gaming history should be forgotten or left unplayed.

    • @Lt_Voss
      @Lt_Voss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the really late reply, but I'd amend that slightly - if the only 'legal' way to acquire the game is through secondhand purchases, either from resale or auction sites like eBay or Amazon, or from the 'used' boxes at game retailers, abandonware should be allowed. I know it's not illegal, but it's pretty slimy to expect that a new user must make do with a used product because used copies were available on the resale market and therefore only legal to own through those resale markets.
      It also would open the door for secondhand sellers to jack the prices up as much as they want; if the only legal means of getting a game is to buy it used from and individual selling an individual copy, then the seller can raise the price to meet the demand - either people won't buy it at all, a handful will pay the extortionate sum to play the game, or people with commit a crime and pirate it.
      TL;DR If no new copies of a game are being circulated through official commercial retailers, nor are new digital copies being sold, then abandonware should be allowed.

    Motion blur is to make low framerates seem smoother, it's not really useful for 60 fps. For anything below 45 fps though, it has a positive impact.

    • @FreaKill666
      @FreaKill666 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Casposaurus More jarring than crappy blurring that never feels right? To each their own, I guess. I can't run never games at 60 and for me it's not a game killer, but motion blur is only bearable when it's deliberately used with other effects to show disorientation or other similar situations. It basically tells me that something's wrong with my character, because he's seeing weird shit so if it's a default, always-ON effect it's just jarring my senses for no good reason.

    • @MrMadalien
      @MrMadalien 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      FreaKill Well motion blur is actually a natural occurrence for the human eye in real life. Motion blur does not occur on still images, even if they "appear" to move like in game on a screen, so the effect has to be artificially injected. It's trying to mimic reality, not simulate disorientation.
      But if it bothers you I suppose an explanation doesn't mean anything.

    • @Mutant1988
      @Mutant1988 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lemon Tree
      Here's the thing though - My eyes already do motion blur of things in motion. So why add another artificial layer on top of that?
      Even if you buy that it tries to simulate real movement... How blurry does your vision get simply by turning your head? Same goes for depth of field. These effects in video games are absurdly exaggerated and completely ignores the fact that our brain constantly compensates for movement.
      The issue is that our eyes already shift focus to what we are looking at and when we're trying to look at something on the screen the game believes we shouldn't (Like say, entering aiming mode but not looking at the circle covering 20% of the screen right in front of the gun), there's a drastic disconnect between what we are doing and what happens on screen, causing nausea.

    The argument in my head for Mirror's Edge is that it's just a matter of re-learning that thing you do as a baby where you figure out spacing of objects around you and how much your body takes up. Long jumpers don't stare at their feet as they run up, they take reference from what they see in front of them. It's the same as with the game, but with an entirely different sense of scale and speed to your actual reality. It took getting used to, sure, but I had lots of fun with the game. Obviously, the controls aren't going to be a 1:1 experience, you will fuck up eventually, but it's not nearly as insurmountable as Yahtzee says.
    Then again, most of the reviews said it was indeed a love it or hate it kind of thing. I'm trying to not fall behind the argument of "you just don't get it!" but maybe it really isn't to Yahtzee's tastes.

    I think I know what was going on with the glitchy textures on the water: instead of treating the surface of the water as a reflective surface, the developer wanted to save processing power by instead having every object that was above the waterline from the player's point of view inverted along the horizon line and imposed on the water's surface, masked with white to make it look more like a reflection. This would make the sky and the clouds appear reflected on the water's surface. This process requires substantially less calculation than reflective surfaces, but absolutely fails when there is a prominent object between the camera and the water. Hence the weird thing that Yahtzee pointed out that he thought was a rendering glitch was, I think, the tree inverted along the horizon line and coloured white. This also explains why the water looks weird just behind the player's axe. I would love to get a second opinion on this.

    As a mariner I can indeed confirm that Lighthouses are used regularly as a secondary means of determining position (solar flares and general tomfoolery makes GPS unreliable). Its similar to trig points on mountains they are very easy to determine location from them based on simple angles.

    I was happy to pay for the DLC for Mass Effect 1 on steam . I mean I bought the game I want the whole thing. It randomly just happened to appear in my account one day after I Favorited a completely unrelated form post with some download links. Anything unethical about that?

    48:40 humans actually did start out as endurance hunters. we'd basically hit something with a pointy stick and follow the animal until they dropped from heat stroke in africa, since we have amazing heat resistance and efficient movement over flat terrain as compared to most animals in extremely hot environments like africa

    When Yathzee mention that certain someone the first person that came to my mind was Annita Sarkesean, so I went to her Twitter to see if it was her and surprise it was indeed her. She also retwitted that the female lead was all possible because of her, she really has an ego problem.

    Have to agree with Gabe here, no issue at all with Mirror's Edge being in first-person. For me it felt natural really.
    Might have to do with the fact I always look down when walking, and I did the same in the game, at which point it's effing easy to see where your feet are. :P

    Honestly, I feel this is what No Man's sky kinda lacked. It was nice to feel as though I was stranded and needed a reason to look for materials to fix my ship, but a sense of threat and real progression is lacking in NMS. If it had different tribes (like the cannibals in The Forest) or more creatures that would try to kill you, I'd be more involved and wanting to gather materials and upgrades to combat this.
    It would have been nice if there were taming features other than just feeding them for a bit of material searching. Maybe letting us ride them, or allowing us to take them to other planets with similar atmospheres to see how they react, be it death or possible mutation (kinda like Spore) depending on the inhabitants and material found.
    I'm not trying to shove this as it's just what I personally feel it could use to help the game out. I figure updates and patches can still be implemented to adjust gameplay. This is just my personal opinion and I do not mean to be rude.

    Chun Li's helium balloon physics is a bug that only happens on the P2 side of the character select screen, according to Capcom. The jiggle in the actual game isn't that overt and looks pretty much like SF4 from what I've seen.
