I was 17 when the song came out. Your post is the first time I EVER heard of this 'controversy'. Maybe it was just in your community. It got plenty of air time and video rotation. It was almost our prom song, but it got beat out by Bon Jovi Livin' on a Prayer

I was about 33 or 34 years old when this song first came out, but now 17 has turned 35 is now 17 has turned 65. This is still one of my favorites by John and I still have it on my playlist.
