John Mellencamp is a very unique musician and a lot of his songs capture the heart and soul of the American farmland and country life. The albums "Scarecrow," "The Lonesome Jubilee" and "Amercian Fool" are full of music to feed the soul! I grew up in the Australian countyside and many of his songs resonate with me!
Thank you guys so much for reacting to John, he has such great music! When you get the time would you please react to John's "Paper in Fire"? If possible, please react to the video....it just adds so much to an already fantastic song. Luv you guys and appreciate all the time and effort you put in!
The next song y'all have to do from John is RAIN ON THE SCARECROW and you should really watch the official video to help tell the story. The song and lyrics tell it great but then you get the visual and extra that really puts a stamp on the subject
John's style of singing or genre is called heartland rock as he sang a lot about blue-collar, farmers & truckers themes. He has had so many hits especially in the 80's such as "Hurts So Good", "Jack & Diane", "Crumblin' Down", "Pink Houses", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Small Town", "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.", "Paper In Fire", "Wild Night" etc.
Man, the video for this is really, really good. Most of it features a teenage interracial couple slow dancing in front of a jukebox. He had to work to make sure that stayed in the video as an element, and it freaked some low IQ folks out. But it didn’t feel like virtue signaling; it was just two kids dancing like the old days, and they happened to be who they were. But the rest of it is his old home movies mixed with what may be some stock footage of growing up in the 70s. He really took care with his videos, and this is one of my favorites.
Honestly, while I think lyric videos are almost always the way to go with reaction videos, the actual music videos for Mellencamp's songs should normally be the first choice. They just always give you the vibe. Pink Houses, Small Town, Paper in Fire, Authority Song, R.O.C.K in the USA are all great choices for the next ones by him.
Hello Asia and BJ, love your choice of music. I'll say it again, you are just scratching the surface the music from the 60's to the 80's. I would have loved taking you two back to my time, it was better than you can realize. Great music was everywhere. Many concerts , tv, radio. Now I would like to recommend a great song from the 60's, ( ONLY THE LONELY ) by the FOUR TOPS. Please give this 71 year old a special memory
John Mellencamp was rebellious in his youth. Some of his other early hits from when he was going by John Cougar: "I Need A Lover (That Won't Drive Me Crazy) "Ain't Even Done With The Night" "Hand To Hold On To" "Authority Song"
I love this song! It’s so nostalgic and true! At 17 we were improving and growing, trying some of everything and loving life! I love John, his songs are always so full of honesty and truth!❤️❤️
Hey hey,ASIA AND BJ…. Made it to OREGON THANK YOU FOR PLAYING THIS SONG, ONE OF MY FAVORITES FROM JOHN AS LONG AS I GET INTERNET HERE AT THE CAMPGROUND, I WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH. 💙🤗🔥
This is probably my favorite JM song. I loved even more after I had kids and watched them grow up. I can relate to the song. He is known for writing about small town midwestern life. But I have come to realize he writes about the human experience. I grew up black in a large urban city in the south but I can personally relate to his music.
Great song very similar in context to "Night Moves" by Bob Seger. A little more country but just as impactful in taking one back to the carefree youth of days long past. One of my favorites from John Mellencamp ( don't call him Cougar, he hated it)
This song is all about nostalgia! Love it! I highly recommend you listen to his duet with Me’Shell Ndegeocello - Wild Night. It’s one of my favorites, I’m 100% sure you’ll love it!
Love John Mellencamp! Some great song suggestions mentioned already, to which I would add Ain’t Even Done With the Night What if I Came Knocking Check It Out Key West Intermezzo
It has been a long time hearing this song. I have seen many of these groups. But John I have seen the most. I lived near Bloomington In. He had many concerts in Indianapolis and Bloomington. Seen all I could.
I am 66 years old, just yesterday I was at my high school friend's home, his name is Dave he's 65. We get together about once every 2 to 3 weeks and have lunch go back to his apartment and do nothing but talk about all the things that we did when we were young. Growing up a teenager in the 60s and 70s I think was the best time for anyone as a teenager. Of course maybe everybody says that except maybe those that grew up in the 90s and 2000s. And even though we tell the same stories over and over again to each other we still laugh like it just happened yesterday, consider that a blessing from God folks
Loved your reaction! I've always been a "mellen" head and this was my second favorite. If you haven't already, Little Pink Houses is a must! Thank you!!
Thought yall had listened to this in a livestream about a month or so ago the video is good to watch while listening to this goes with the song..his dancing next to the jukebox 🕺lol
Mellencamp is from my hometown. This is another Bonfire in.the middle of nowhere. Keg of beer and enjoying time with your friends and girlfriend. We were just teenagers not wanting to grow up too fast!
YYESSS! This song makes me smile. Oh those young early days of energy and fun with friends. My other pick for you is Wild Nights with Me'Chelle dancing together (NOT the video with the stupid model) The fun with John and Me'Chelle the pure enjoyment and her BASS!!
You must watch the official video of Ain't Even Done With The Night. One of John's earliest when he went by John Cougar .He truly looks 17. In the video
“17 has turned 35. I’m surprised that we’re still living. If we’ve done any harm, I hope that we’re forgiven.” “Got a few kids of my own. Some days I still don’t know what to do. I hope that they’re not laughing too loud when they hear me talking like this to you”.
I'm a huge fan of John Mellencamp. Just about every song he has speaks a message. If you get a chance check out his song "now more then ever" and "walk tall" both fit in today's world still.
This song and many of his other songs takes me back how life was much more simpler and easier growing up before more advance technology took over childhood.
Sh*t, 22 (when this song came out) has turned 57, lol. I'm the second oldest person at my job...how did that happen? The kids there do laugh with--and at--me with my reminiscences of the old days, but that's cool, as they'll be in my shoes soon enough.
John Mellencamp is great and this song is a bomb, and we used to think he was saying that was when dope was dope, instead of sport was sport, just love the song and video and he’s a artist that’s proud to be an American without being Political
Y'all should have watched the original video for this, the producers of the video asked people to send in Old footage of themselves as teenagers and young people to make this video it was really good concept
This is my favorite song by him. Loved it back then still do. Much much better than Jack and Diane. Pink Houses and The Authority Song are boss. Believe I saw him sing with John Fogerty, CCR and Bruce Springsteen it proves,he's a rocker.
I'm not sure, but I think the instrument you're referring to may be the autoharp. (If that's wrong, someone will correct me.) In the official video, you see John playing it, but the album info suggests that it was actually played by Larry Crane, so ... not sure if Mellencamp really knows how to play it or not.
"That's when a sport was a sport". What? Here in Canada it was always the original version: "That's when a coke was a coke". Seems really crazy to me that needed to be censored
The fiddle and accordion-driven sound of this song and album are uniquely American and incredibly good.
He was known to use a bunch of different instruments
Yup- it’s called Americana! Check out Gillian Welch!😊

Love your reactions all the way here in Brisbane, Australia x

Very nostalgic song. We've all been through it. Back when times were simple.
The album this is from "Lonesome Jubilee" is a classic. Great sound, great lyrics
Great album

Always heard it as 'that's when a smoke was a smoke'!
Me too!! 😃

Asia & BJ, you'll love his "Pink Houses", "I Need A Lover" and "Wild Night" !!!

Great storytelling. Such a great feeling song.
Life was so much simpler when i grew up in the 70s! We walked and rode our bikes everywhere with our friends.

He captures small town American life as good as anyone, one of the best songwriters in my humble opinion.
I hated Mellencamp but then he became one of my favourite artists. This song is a classic. Great reaction.

It's so cool to see you two enjoying these lyrics and digging on this groove. You two are the best!
Holdin' hands meant something baby... (I LOVE that line!!)
Great song very similar in context to "Night Moves" by Bob Seger. A little more country but just as impactful in taking one back to the carefree youth of days long past. One of my favorites from John Mellencamp ( don't call him Cougar, he hated it)
This song still plays daily in New Zealand 🇳🇿❤🇳🇿only Real MUSIC🤙🤛🤘✌️

This song is all about nostalgia! Love it!
I highly recommend you listen to his duet with Me’Shell Ndegeocello - Wild Night. It’s one of my favorites, I’m 100% sure you’ll love it!
LOVE that song!
Yes!!
John Cougar Mellencamp's music resonates Americana and Nostalgia. There was a touch of zydeco sound with the use of fiddle and accordion in this song.
Paper in Fire is another amazing song
John Mellencamp absolutely hated the name cougar. That’s why he took it off his name. The record label made him add it to his name.
Love John Mellencamp!
Some great song suggestions mentioned already, to which I would add
Ain’t Even Done With the Night
What if I Came Knocking
Check It Out
Key West Intermezzo
I forgot just how much I have loved this song! It's been a long time since I heard it but grew up with it.

Love this song. I live down the road from John’s hometown-Seymour, IN
Right up there with Bob Seger’s Night Moves.
When Asia smiles my heart just skips a beat. This is such a nice song. As an old guy now , this song takes me back to my youth. Time goes by so fast.
Thought yall had listened to this in a livestream about a month or so ago the video is good to watch while listening to this goes with the song..his dancing next to the jukebox 🕺lol

Mellencamp is the man, his concerts are great!
Rockin’ out on an accordion and fiddle … how Americana is that.
Is this a radio edit or something? I'm sure the line is "That's when a Smoke was a smoke" - no sport involved!
Cherry Bomb is a corner diner where they all hung out

An accordion a harmonica and a fiddle....

Gotta do Crumblin Down by Mellencamp
All these years I thought it was "That's when a smoke was a smoke" 🤔
Another song you can try with the same type of mood would be Yesterday by the Beatles. That'll take you back to younger years
I love John Cougar or John Mellencamp!!
"Ain't even done with the Night"is my favorite!!
Great Song and Album
The greatest songwriter ever
