Sonic CD - Sonic Was Always Good

  • UPDATE: There is now a better version of this game. Sonic CD & Knuckles is similar to the other Classic fan versions. Here's a link to a spreadsheet I put together compiling all of my Sonic recommendations.
    docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
    Quite pleased with this one. I think it's fairly concise while covering pretty much everything I wanted to talk about. Sorry again about the stuttering. It will be fixed soon enough.
    The one thing I cut from the video was a little tid bit. The time travel idea for this game likely was taken from Sonic 2. Sonic 2 originally had time travel in it, but was cut out. But since CD was going to be a version of Sonic 2 early on, the team of that game probably decided to keep the time travel idea in their game once they started doing their own thing. You can see remnants of the time travel in Sonic 2 still present in the game. You ever notice how Hill Top's environment tiles are just Emerald Hill in a different color? That's because Hill Top was originally supposed to be Emerald Hill in the past. So that's neat.
    You can support me here if you want. ko-fi.com/pariah695

    Here's why I think the robot generator system was done very well. The basic way to play the game is to go to the past, break the generator and then exit the act in the past without going back to the present/future.
    When playing this way it means the game has two phases.
    Phase 1: Exploration. The only objectives are travel to the past and find the generator, but you don't have to break your back trying to find a generator in every level. I spend no more than five minutes in an Act and if I don't manage to get to the robot generator then I lose that act for today, so then just run to the signpost.
    Phase 2: Linear. This phase starts once you know the location all of the generators. Now the game becomes linear, because you know the optimal path for the basic objectives, so there is a single "linear" pathway, although this involves traveling through time and sometimes from right to left. "Sometimes you move left, sometimes right...but you are *always* moving forward."
    So now, instead of a game with an "upper" path and "lower" path, you have an optimal single path surrounded by any number of possible side routes and detours, which come into play if you make a time travel mistake, or if you take a hit and need to build your ring count back up for the special stage entry fee of 50 rings.
    This sheds light on the seemlingly baffling designs of Collision Chaos and Wacky Workbench. When you always travel to the past and exit the signpost there, those past versions are much smoother to get through.

      Personally ive played the game a LOT (across the gems collection, on my phone as a kid, on the 360 and the pc) but there are still many generators i havent found
      Only spending 5 minutes tops searching per level means it would take years of pretty consistent playing to find them all for the average person especially that infamous one in the last zone
      Getting the time stones and doing it that way is by far the easier option so thats always what i did

      Also, just following the top path works for like 4 of the 7 zones after that Wacky Workbench hides them in areas (be it under a piston the game shows previously to lead to secret areas or taunting you right at the start of the stage), Stardust Speedway inverts the original formula with Generators on the bottom path, and Metallic Madness just puts them in little notches in the level. They're not as hard to find as people say they are.

  • @grimey3480
    @grimey3480 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I think playing the game as fast as possible becomes 10x more fun when you're doing generator runs, which I think was the intention. Learning the quickest path to the nearest sign, generator, learning how to execute your time travel attempts better and more efficiently. The idea of speedrunning sonic games usually doesn't appeal to me, but CD's very short length and many different ways to accomplish time travel makes it so I'm not discouraged when I make a mistake. On top of that, I'm constantly discovering new ways to use the physics system to time travel earlier in the level. It's great stuff.

    • @Emery_Pallas
      @Emery_Pallas 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My most recent playthrough I've mostly done it by getting the Robot generators before working up to the good future to farm for rings and lives with whatever time remains. I assume this is the games intention with the good futures since they're usually just easier bad future layouts and the rings dont track per timezone. And because of that 10 minute timer, something that I felt earlier was a severe limitation of the game, it actually encourages that speedrunning mentality.

    Collecting the time stones is not hard for me, an special UFO appears at the center of the map when you have 20 seconds left, it gives you 30 seconds and it will appear always that you have 20 seconds left, so you can literally stay for an undefined amount of time in the special zone.

    Sonic cd was the first sonic game to genuinely have consequences for your actions in sonic 1 and 2 you even if you don't get the chaos emeralds it will still end up saying you got it in the next game. And I feel like the level design was meant to be odd for Pete sake thid is an entirely different planet and I felt like it was completely intentional. And besides the gameplay of getting the good ending can be tedious but rewarding with whole get the generate find good momentum and getting time stone, but it makes you think and strategies where's the best routes to take for speed where will the ufo go next what's the best place to time travel. Not to mention the level design is out thid world it has the best back ground design out the original classics hands down look at stardust speedway wacky workbench metallic madness quadrant quartz tidal tempest etc they all look so good in every variant. Pasting a simple background and present adding more to the simple level and background bad future having a metallic look as technology ruins the environment (and I the case of robotic levels such as metallic madness and Wacky workbench they are rusted and extremely worn out) and for the good future it shoes the coexistence of nature and technology. And I love how each level design has one color as it's primary bases such as pat wacky workbench hsving an extreme green look or good future stardust speedway sharing a purple look. and the (JP/EU) music fits perfectly with the stage and entire vibe of the game. I feel like thid game gets undeserved hate because it doesn't follow the original formula of a sonic game, but if you just play the game how it's suppose to and just truly take in the experience of the game its Hella lot of fun

    Maybe some people would think I'm a moron for what I'm about to write. I think CD works better than 2 and I also prefer it over 3&K. All this talk of replaying Sonic games to get better at them never worked for me. The timer shows a few seconds less after I memorised the entire level? I don't care. There's a super beautiful version of the same level that puts a smile on my face? That's enough for me to do some exploring. The special stages do kind of suck, but I managed to beat them (well, in the HD version), whereas the ones in Sonic 2 (original) are just impossible. I wrote down exactly where the spiky balls come at which point in the tube and I even set Tails' controls to be the same as Sonic's in the emulator (Tails can mess the special stages up), but I never got all emeralds. And for 3&K: I hardly played it and this endless pyramid level makes me want to purge it from my memory.

    • @Pariah6950
      @Pariah6950  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That sucks. I took it off the description. Fortunately that same effect can be easily achieved by just replacing the video files in the game's folders. Thanks for the heads up.
      As for the Time Travel Overhaul, I haven't tried it myself. I don't really care about the time travel quest in general, so I never bothered. Though it seem to fix a number of things about the base game's travel. Letting you trigger it more manually, making it easier to do, and letting you take multiple attempts at it. All good ideas on paper. Just haven't seen for myself if it actually works. Though, the level design is deliberately built for the normal mechanics, so changing that does compromise the design a bit. Not the hugest deal though, especially if it makes the rest of the time travel better.
      Personally, I would want something a bit more faithful to the original that is less of a pain. Like how about you can manually enter "time travel mode" with a toggle of a button. You need to get the sign first, but once you have it, you can use it as much as you want. But it won't do anything if you're not in time travel mode. With it on, it works like normal CD mechanics, but you don't lose the chance to time travel if you mess it up. You can keep trying as much as you want, or disable it if you don't want to accidentally travel. And maybe even use 2 toggles on the shoulder buttons, so you can have both past and future signs at once and they don't override each other. You just need to find 1 sign of each in each time to get access to those time travel modes. Something like that.

    Sonic 2’s levels go in the other direction, making more linear and more restrictive levels

      Sonic 2 has more linear levels, but it still has different routes and it gives the player lots of freedom. It also has a lot of speed in its levels.

    Totally agree with everything in this video. If im feeling frisky I'll go and destroy the robot generators bc i do think the level design being so vertical is fun to find them. But as you said finding a sign and getting enough speed is incredibly difficult bc the levels just have random rocks and springs EVERYWHERE. I usually just play this game straight when i replay. But the levels when just playing straight are unsatisfying are most are straight lines when no looking for past signs and generators. It's a boring game to play straight, finding the generators is a lot of fun but getting to the past is a pain. If it was easier to get to the past this game would be much much improved. Bc i do like trying to find them. But its not worth all the hassle. Espcially as you said when you accidentally go to the future then i just restart the level bc im not doing 2 past signs lol. I've just played through the classics and I gotta say I thought the bosses in CD were by far the best. Cordoned to their own levels thank god, frequently a platforming challenge that actually makes use of the core mechanics, and designs that aren't repetitive. I'd much rather achieve a singular objective/set of objectives than do the same thing 8 times.
    The execution is pretty poor, the pinball one was a complete mess, but even suffering through it I really appreciated the design philosophy. Platforming challenges, dynamic bosses that change with each hit, an actual race. I wish the subsequent games stuck to this philosophy and improved the execution going forward because I think there's much more potential for fantastic bosses that play to Sonic's gameplay far better than the bog standard 8 hit rinse and repeats.

    This is I think the single Sonic game that benefited the most from the remaster. The original game has some horrendous collision detection and that plus the level design being the way that it is led me to just outright dislike the original version of the game. The remaster fixes all the collision issues and of course adds all the extra nice features that you’d expect, so it’s quite fun now, while still probably being the weakest entry in the Classic series at least until Superstars came out.

    The special stages were so much better in the original non-Christian Whitehead versions of the game. I haven't seen a jump so floaty since the original Sonic Adventure. It was so much faster and more snappy in the version on Sonic Gems Collection.
    This is definitely a game where I enjoy the first half but once you get to Wacky Workbench it's a never-ending nightmare of wanting to get off this crazy train.

    I like exploration in Sonic games, but even I don't like CD lol
    "wandering" sums it up perfectly, all you do is wander around aimlessly and hope you find the generator in levels that somehow simultaneously feel like cluttered messes, and barren wastelands devoid of any sort of challenge. The game doesn't ask you to think outside of the box and use the tools it provides you in creative or interesting ways, you don't even have to do any platforming challenges to find the generators. Sonic Colors and Sonic 3 & Knuckles do this same type of gameplay much better, and even Treasure Hunting in SA2 is more fun than this

    This game is so annoying to be played with Sonic, his mechanics are not meant for this kind of exploration. I hated it until I played with Tails, because his playstyle is much more akin to the slowpace and the verticality of the levels.
    Anyway, is not a good game at all.

    No. Just no.
    The soundtrack is bad(us one is dumpster fire).
    Level design feels like some one played with the level editor.
    There is no innovation.
    No rewards for exploration or completing the optional tasks.
