      i used sony camcorder when i worked at a local tv station in my city, for news gathering.
      i really cant imagine using anything else for the purpose... when you need something fast and easy to use for quick shots and interviews on the road, nothing comes close... big production cameras are just to heavy and robust, and using smaller "photography" cameras is just out of the option because you would have to rig them like crazy and it would still not be as functional...
      camcorders are amazing at what they do and i still miss working with it!

    I have used camcorders a lot. They are so convenient and easy to use. Yes, I have used digital cameras too for video. When I want fast and easy production, then the camcorder is the way to go. Camcorders are work horses. Not everything has to be the most artistic production ever, capable of Sundance. You just want good and fast.

    First let me say, your reviews may perhaps be the very best of all. And there are several others who produce some very good reviews, but the conciseness in your reviews are second to none, in my humble opinion. Now, on with this new offering from Canon. This is arguably the very best 4K Camcorder available! While 5 Grand is a bit steep, its feature set is one as you said that is in effect...COMPLETE!! There really is no other cost you'll have to incur using the Canon XF605, and the image quality is very very good. Yes, when side by side comparisons against the C70 are presented, the difference is several aspects is noticeable. But here is the thing....I use the fantastically versatile JVC GY-LS300, which is a 4K, Super35 Camcorder with an MFT Mount...I don't think you've ever reviewed it as it remains one of the finest Cameras that went well under anyones radar, because it was, or even more accurate was NOT a Sony, RED, Canon, Panasonic camera when it was released in 2015. While it captures in 8bit, it does capture in a LOG profile producing some fantastic images that virtually no one can tell its 8bit because of its "Film-like" quality in the images it produces. With the ability to mount more lenses than any other camera I've ever shot with, having a MFT Mount using adapters....like the XF605, it is a Camcorder Style camera with built in ND Filters and easily accessible buttons for just about everything, with included dual full-size XLR ports. I simply do not like...AT ALL, the form factor of the C70. In fact, I am hopping that this new offering form Canon will prove so successful, that it sparks a 'reversal" of sorts to moving away from the DSLR type Video Cameras. In fact, I too would love to see this camera become the catalyst for a new Super35 Sensor Camera with an interchangeable lens mount, or even a Micro Four Thirds Sensor. I have shot extensively with the C300ii, and always felt uncomfortable with its form factor...its just a CLUNK of a Camera. The JVC GY-LS300 is no longer produced, but to this day, those who shoot with it...LOVE IT, because of its Form Factor and its Image Quality. Matthew Allard did a wonderful piece shot with the LS300, and as others, loved its functionality. Canon's LCD screen implementation here looks to be fantastic and very solid in its operation. I have two of the JVC's, and was on a shoot with them yesterday...but if I was looking to replace them, or was choosing a Camera today, even with its "One Inch" sensor....the Canon XF605 would be my choice!!! Again, fantastic review!!!

    Each barrel of honey should have its own fly in the ointment. *The vaunted autofocus Canon only works with the outdated B.709 color space.* For modern HDR/B.2020 or C.Gamut, both autofocus and focus assistance is not supported (see the manual). In all your focus demonstrations, you use only B.709. Show how it will focus in B.2020 or Log 3/C.Gamut. As a result, you need to choose whether to shoot for old devices, but with a sharp, focused picture, or shoot for modern HDR monitors and TVs, but without focus. Thank you Canon.

    Because you need one? Seriously - all cameramen in the TV channel I was working before use camcorders only for work. It's super convenient to have a great focal range with smooth consistent zoom and parfocal lens, to have great battery life and no record limits, to have build-in nd filters, to have xlr mic jacks, etc, etc... all that in a pretty small, specifically designed package, with all additional aids for monitoring picture and audio quality. That's what keeps me on the fence. Maybe not Arri level as that might be a bit much to ask for, but at least C70 with interchangeable lens type of image quality. I guess to get close to that we might have to think about Sony FX series stuff. But still, this video has shown the convenience of a camcorder. It almost feels like these companies are purposely NOT making a reasonably priced camcorder with photo image tech. Are the trade offs in this video actually trade offs? or are they done purposely as to not cannibalize the lines? Legit asking since I'm not a pro film maker.

    I have been using the XF605 for only one month and I enjoy its possibilities and its user interface. This is the first time I've shot in 10-bit and I still have a lot to learn about handling this format with Adobe Première. Just a critic at the level of the shutter. Difficult and long to use on the field. 25 years ago I used an analog soviet camcorder with a ring to adjust the shutter and that was great.
    After two months of use, I'm very disappointed with the XF-605. The AF is random, and the image stabilization doesn't work.
    I regret having bought the XF605 and have sold it. I wouldn't recommend this camera to anybody.

    Literally bought a used XF300 a couple months back and am really loving shooting with it, the quality to my eye is excellent. It's good to know that Canon have bought out a Camcorder in the XF605, that I might one day be able to afford to upgrade to. The XF705 for me is waaaay waaaay waaaaay too expensive to even look in the direction of. Question: Will there be a cheaper Canon XF600 version without all the BNC connectors like the XF300? Some of us ENG and run-and-gun shooters don't need all that stuff. 🤔

      Yes, there is now the XA70/75 cameras. The 605 is a great update to the XF300 which I also owned (and still love). But the 605 is cleaner in lower light and has so many updated user friendly features like SD card, awesome AF, dual SD recording, the list goes on and on. BUT, I still use my XF305 in multi cam shoots where the output is 1080 25p.

    The XF605 is IMHO finally the proper successor of XHG1 (and XHA1) camera twins! After Canon 5Dii changed the budget filming and started DSLR-mania for budget video, quickly following Panasonic and than Sony, pro-sumer camcorders suddenly being neglected. Canon did put out the successor XF300/XF305 pair, but I've seen price cutting measures as market was shrinking with those models. While before Canon offered both larger XLH1 camera with interchangeable lenses and compact twin XHA1/XHG1 (the "G" version had pro connectivity), the XF300 replaced both in one. Even the "broken/slanted" design suggested so. I saw XF300 too bulky and too expensive for being true XHA1 replacement, despite having better lens (with less zoom!) and better 4:2:2 codec that was BBC approved. Also I missed that pro connectivity from XHG1 and XF305 was even more "too expensive". While my higher level production friends missed lens interchange with it. It seemed XF300/305 made no one happy. People chattered around upgrading to whatever (even later Canon C100 and other brands. Than Canon released "one ring" XF100/XF105 that were old XM2 replacement and that was it. For next six (6) years no new model. They only kept "XA" line alive, that replaced previous "HV" line.
    In 2014 Canon released a "two ring" XF200/XF205, which gave hopes, but one ring missing and camera too small. Not a XA, not a XF ... than they released XF400/XF405 in 2017, again same small form factor. I lost hopes to ever get modern replace for camera as was my beloved XHA1 form factor - perfectly balanced and handling with proper three rings for manual operation and not too bulky. I hide camera under rain coat when filming in wild and torrential rain started. F**ck me, camera was saved and seconds after it showered last drops I was filming again, where others were only crawling out from shelters. I thought form factor is dead and than Canon kicked out the XF705 in 2018! The XF305 replacement! Not only that, Canon decided to ditched the "00" skimmed version and just give out the "05" version with all the connectivity. So format is alive at least. And FFWD to 2021, they put out the mighty XF605! It is the most resembling XHA1/G1 even by the price! Finally a perfect all rounder again. Is it perfect at IQ? No, as XHA1 was not, but it is perfect at versatility.
    Thank you for such a great representation for all those "hybrid shooters" that think they held God for his beard with those awkward still cameras that can shoot video. I see it as taking stills with iPad or even better comparison: To take stills with XHA1/G1 that had that option, even dedicated SD card and no-nonsense features, including flash hot-shoe option!

    Thanks for the review. I do regular TH-cam vids and look more and more into camcorders. I did start with DSLR´s and shoot currently on a Canon 90D. This is OK but i think, especically for Events and Interviews and as well smaller presentations and Exhibitions this could be a great alternative.
    Low light could be sometimes and issue but normally I am also equiped with good lighting. will look a bit more into this one.

    Looks so great, and the price is a little lower than I thought it'd be (I was thinking $5-6K). I've had an XF405 for a while now and while it's far from perfect and isn't as sexy as large-sensor cams, it is still very useful and puts out a nice picture, even more so with the recent addition of CLog3. It's super useful for interview setups because it records 4 tracks of audio.
    I do wish the 605 was a little smaller, closer to the 405 than the 705. And I reallllly wish they kept doing the rotating side grip the XF205 has.

    • @DuffTV
      @DuffTV 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the Image stabilisation on the xf205 worked better on a tripod. No slight lag when going from a static shot to a pan like with 605/705.
      But overall it's a wonderful camcorder with a slight cinema look

    Just seeing this so forgive me…
    I notice that with the sample images they have a considerable amount of greenish blueish tint to it. I assume these are images right out of the box, auto white balance on. By comparison the Sony z90 has a much better auto balance. This limits post adjustments.
    How do you feel about it today? Would you still recommend it today?

    Very useful video, thanks for sharing. As a photographer I understand exposure, depth of field, composition etc. I love video, but when it comes to all the codecs, file types and resolutions etc, I have a lot to learn! I desperately want something better than a camcorder on auto, DSLRs and Mirrorless have restricted running times due to overheating when recording video, so the XF605 is on my radar. My question is, where do I learn all the 'tech stuff' involved with shooting video in manual mode.
    I recently had to shoot a dance show that lasted nearly two hours, so aside from B-roll a DSLR was out, so I hired a Sony video camera. It did the job OK but was only HD.
    Any advice on good resources to learn the 'tech' stuff?
    Thanks in anticipation.

    My issue is that I can never tell the visual difference between a camcorder vs a camera in video. But I could always see the diffrance between still images. Given they're not being heavily edited first.
    Really feel like the value of camcorders are only at the $1000+ range. Since I haven't seen any camcorders for less then that, that can also outperform a camera in that price bracket. And having really good phits is really important. More so then video if you ask me.

    So that camcorder is over $4000. So unless you are really serious about JUST video. It's not exactly practical compared to a good APSC camera. Consider the A6400 or A6600. Or really any other camera at or around $1000. And you'll find it provides more then enough visual quality. And buy a few lens for widely diffrent situations. Cameras around this price point are often smaller and compact. You'd only need to buy a few add-ons to make it basically the same as this camcorder.

    It's odd the rolling shutter is so bad. youd think that would be one of the big advantages with the smaller sensor size. C70 is the way to go even if you need more "run and gun". Just get a decent zoom like the 24-105 RF or something and deal with it...

    • @csamd9049
      @csamd9049 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The image quality of the 1500 is also as good as the 1" sensor cameras Ive used.
