The mother's story & the look on her face when she tells Jessica "she's a very nice girl" is worth the whole movie.
Brilliant scene. As Roger Ebert said: Toyah Feldshuh "took something ordinary and made it extraordinary". . Love this movie. Would have preferred the ending to be slanted more towards the woman in the shop who showed an interest when Jessica was delivering her flyers, and less towards Josh though.
@@ochjim I thought Josh was an ass, and there was 0 chance of him getting to be a nice guy after he tore her up at the dinner party.
Would have been better if she didn't need him or any other guy. You never see THAT ending.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 He tore her up at the dinner party because he was still in love with her and was trying to create a wedge between Jessica and the guy that she was set up with. Her boss didn't want Jessica to have a chance with the guy that they set her up with... he still wanted her.
True story: I love this movie, except...I literally stop it at the scene where they move in together and pretend it's the end of the movie. Headcannon: Jessica and Helen live happily ever after.
I feel this so much. That would've been a great ending, but unfortunately they had to break up for some fucking reason
The way they both screamed in unison at that sudden focus shift to 'Josh Hamm' was HILARIOUS

The transitions of this movie made me remember in those times where the teacher asked me to make a 15 minutes-long presentation. I put like 9 minutes of powerpoint-transitions to spend the time.
The women who played Helen and Jessica were actually lovers when they made this indie film.

@@adrianatdottru - Yeah. They were both into making films and they made this one as their first feature. I'm good friends with one of the producers of the film, a woman who now lives in L.A. Production was insane -- it was almost guerilla, like going into random places and offering some money to shoot there.
Wasn't she married to John Ham at the time?

Lolz I love this movie. I feel like it's not about whether they end up together, but rather that this relationship led to their being happier and more fulfilled in their lives, even after they broke up. It's about moving out of your comfort zones and letting new experiences guide your path. And they just happened to frame this message through a queer lady relationship.

ares I disagree. We absolutely don’t see more queer girls “chose the guy” in the media. In a lot of the actual triangle situations, it’s the other way around - they start off with a guy and end up choosing the girl - (*spoilers*) I Can’t Think Straight, Imagine Me & You, South of Nowhere, Orange is the New Black, The Fosters, But I’m a Cheerleader, Glee…even going back to the 80s and 90s with stuff like Desert Hearts and Friends.
But at the end of the day, neither of the ladies in this movie “chose the guy” anyway, so this movie couldn’t play into that narrative. We saw Jessica flirting with Josh a while after the break up, but she didn’t chose him over Helen. And Helen was with another woman by then. The problem with their relationship was that they just weren’t sexually attracted to each other anymore. Which happens in real relationships even when both people are 2000% gay! Not every relationship is happily ever after, and it’s dumb that so many movies act like they are.
That's...actually totally the right way to look at it.

The L word is the worst! It made me (a committed lesbian) be tired of queer sex scenes towards the end. Cause there were like 3 of them in every episode and TOO LITTLE and TOO SHALLOW storytelling. But still it would be fun if you watched an episide of it... Maybe not the last one, cause that's just depressing... In the beginning the fuckin was still more exciting :-P

Oh man, I remember renting this movie back in high school JUST because I saw it on Idina's IMDB page. This was way before she got big outside of the theater scene. I completely missed her the first time I watched it, and then was so disappointed that she wasn't in it more.
