@@JonCoupland I believe its dirt trapped in the window rubbers scratches the glass, you can deep clean the rubbers to stop it getting worse but replacing the glass is the only fix for existing ones
A lovely car, and the interior bring back fond memories of my own 75 Tourer Club SE 1.9 CDTi Automatic in the mid 2000's. I loved the car, a great drive and ride, and a fantastic place to sit, with the wood dash and the orange glow from the retro dials. The only gripe I would have is the interior space, it is a bit snug for the size of car. Had to sell mine as I went to work overseas.
Hi Jon, to do the saggy door cards , fill a small spray bottle with a mixture of water and PVA glue , spray the material and press back into position , no stains and it will glue in position, done mine 2 years ago and it's still in place, cheers iain
It's an absolute beauty with a great history. Great buy especially given you have a very experienced dad who can sort the head gasket. Those early models, as Rover intended, are the best too. So many gorgeous design touches. Looking forward to following it
This can turn into a very nice car! Congratulations. Maybe you can do the door cards with thin glue in a hypodermic needle? Also don't forget to rebalance the wheels with self adhesive weights 👏😀
My old 75 used to leak into the boot through the threads on the chrome trim on the rear quarter panels. One of the most cosy car interiors ever! Hope once the coolant is sorted you have a great time with the car
I remember my uncle pulling up in one of these to take me and my cousin to the cinema. His was a green colour. I don't know the exact name, but it reminded me of mint chocolate chip ice cream, lol. Awesome motor and was like being in a spaceship back then. Awesome video and an awesome car you have.
I believe their a thermostat upgrade as well as a radiator upgrade, which was the main headgaskit problem cause they either added water fins. In some cases, they completely changed the directions of the fins. I would consider putting in a manual on switch which you can manually switch the fan on Good luck, Oh the Rover 75 was known of the poor mans rolls Royce
Lovely example, rare to find a nice Cowley 75 these days. Almost identical to my dad's first 75, a Wedgewood 1.8 Classic SE, just one trim level below this one.
Lovely car and definitely worth saving. K series gets a lot of stick but put in a new gasket from the saic MG7 and they're pretty reliable so im informed, 2.5 KV6 in mine been led to believe the V6s are less prone to HGF than the 1.8.
Nice car Jon. My favourite kind of Rover 75 is in Wedgewood blue. And even better that Mrs Coupland approves. I have a feeling that you’ll have another Rover again…
Lovely looking car, a bit of advise though, before you get on the usual head gasket train can you please make sure the cooling fans are coming on when it gets hot, I've had plenty of Rover 75's that people have told me "yea mate its head gasket failure, they all do that" but in fact the cooling fan wasn't coming on. The fan is either seized or the resistor for the fan has failed, this is a common fault 👍
Hi Nick. Thanks for your comment and great advice! - the fans are kicking in ... In fact the fans are running really hard. We suspect there may be a few issues going on here
Hope you have deep pockets I've had 6 from the 1.8 turbo, the diesel, and the 2.5 V6 which the engine cooked off it went on a break down recovery truck to the scrap yard. Looking at the moment for another one. Must be mad. Problems so many ie brake pipes corroded, chassis corrosion, leaks here and there. At least there's no sunroof. Last one £500 including labour for complete brake pipes through out. Springs brake can puncture front tyres. Best of luck you'll need it. In my opinion best 75 the 1.8 turbo manual not for motorway really need a 6 speed box i was always looking for that extra gear.

You scoff at the BMW fuel cap but it could be original or identical replacement... I'm seeing a lot of parts under the bonnet which are straight from the BMW parts bin 😉
Thankfully I know a chap who keeps older BMWs on the road ... So If I need anything quick ... 😜 Of course I am joking when I scoff at BMW (just to play up to the stigma that they were the downfall of Rover) - I expect it's a replacement cap as the original should be a Valeo one
4:54 not many people know this but that isnt chrome. The Rover 75 had STAINLESS STEEL trim that was polished. Way better than chrome. Got a 1999 cowley 75 too. Rare pewter grey with Aubergine personalline interior 2.5 automatic. Had it for 8 years now. About 140k miles on it now and still going
Awesome motor! Really want one myself, except I prefer the beige leather interior with the coloured stitched edges. Sadly you don't see that spec in combination with a manual all that much over where I live.
Added to the previous no heater clue I reckon the coolant has been low in that car for a long time and it's just been doing short runs. As soon as you took it on a long run it was just too much for it. New MLS gasket, the system properly flushed out and bled and it'll be fine.
@@JonCoupland Yes but it was airlocked - the block and head weren't full. There's a bleeding procedure to prevent that and it's dependent on the heater matrix being perfectly clear.
I'd be suspicious about all the weights on the front left alloy wheel... either a very out-of-round cheap tyre or a buckled wheel I'd guess ? In any case if you get another wheel you can fit the 5th one into the spare wheel well no problem with the 15" ones like you have on the car...
2-litre diesel was a BMW engine (completely re-engineered by Rover to be much more reliable than BMW’s version ironically!); the 2.0 and 2.5-litre V6 engines were in-house K-series (KV6).
Nothing wrong with the 1.8 K series if u look after it John....the cooling system is very fussy on air locks and dodgy O rings on the expansion cap...put vasceline on the O rings and screw it on reasonably tight...Bob...Paignton....
Head gasket on 2.5 V6 much better but don't drive it anywhere if temperature gauge goes up like I did and cooked the engine car ended up on scrap lorry £300
What do you think about the car then?
I cannot wait to get it up to my standards (and get it fixed!)
Sorry it’s an old man’s car!
@@sallyo7754 Yep 👍
I just bough a 2002 v6 same colour. I collect cars. This rover 75 is beautiful. A lot of car for little money. Yours is beautiful also🙏🏼😍

scratched windows are common on 75s and R50 Minis, its a fault of the mechanism
I knew you would know! What is the fault?

It’s a stupid design. Glass runs to close to the seal.
