Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. I met Kirk and Michael Douglas when I was 19 years old and working at a seafood restaurant in Santa Barbara. I actually made a joke at Michael's expense and his Father laughed at my joke! such a great moment

christopherg9806, Dick Cavett was usually a very good interviewer, but in this one, he said things to Kirk Douglas that were off-putting, at least to me, and Kirk Douglas handled it so well. I felt sorry for Kirk D. having to have to try so hard to respond in a positive way. Kirk Douglas was a high-quality human.

This man was so gracious in the interview. We'll never see the likes of him again in our lifetime.
True.
This is the way they were. Articulate, educated (often self) and respectful. Old Hollywood had men and women of integrity. Did you hear him use profane language? Watch some others from his era and more often than not, you'll see the same thing. I sometimes listen to the old movies adapted to radio on Radio classics and when the director and actors speak afterward, they use proper and correct English. Today, the language is brutalized on a daily basis.
Failure's easier to handle than success. That's poetic and applies to many Hollywood/musical names. First interview I've seen on KD and I think he's very level headed and obviously well read. Legend.
He was such an icon... I think Lonely are the brave is such a great film. Rest in Peace Spartacus you were a titan of the screen.
It was his favorite as well.
Just wanted to share one of my favorite Kirk Douglas movie: "Paths of Glory" - 1957. He played a military lawyer that defended 3 men during WW1 that were charged with cowardice under fire for refusing to charge a machine gun nest that would've been a suicidal charge. Excellent film.

Class act. He always spoke highly of his son's acting and not in a patronizing way. It's nice to see that they had such a great relationship. He deserved some Oscars too! Fantastic actor.

I think the thing is that he knew Wayne personally. We never really get to know public figures and there is always more to them than what we see from them publicly. I mean, there are sometimes people in one's life who you are friends with despite them having a pretty big flaw. What should we do? It depends on what they do and say, but I don't think it would be the right thing to cut all ties or to be unkind to them in public when they can't even defend themselves.
As to the Oscars. Who knows. There were a lot of good actors around in those years. It was difficult to win one I guess. It's also not as important to win it. The idea of art as a competition is bad enough if you ask me, and too often movies with a message are chosen over those which are masterfully crafted. Or why should only one movie, actor, script etc. be awarded? Is there really one clear winner? I don't think so. He has movies that will probably be watched forever and that is worth more than award I think. Time is probably the only real award.
So being patriotic would be "bad", in your opinion?
How moving to hear Kirk talking with such genuine love and pride about his son Michael. Guys, here’s how to be a good man...
A wonderful performer, person and dad. Who would have thought such a combination could have been nurtured by Hollywood? Thanks for your service, Kirk.

Douglas had much more range and a sense of becoming another character. Wayne was basically the same character in every movie.
Kirk really shines here. Honest, direct and full of energy, But he is being interviewed by a particularly full interviewer in Cavett.
Cavett was the absolute best interviewer. Relaxed manner and allows guest to talk.
He's such a gentleman. Some of those questions were not really good, but he was so good hearted and tried to answer as best he could.
Cavett kept trying to get him to denounce John Wayne, and nobody cared about that. Terrible interview
Yeah, Cavett appeared to be acting like a jerk. He also asked bewildering questions, as well. Agreed. He should have shown better respect toward Mr. Douglas.

The hair on this guy
Kirk was 76 here and showed no signs of hair loss whatsoever. That is extremely rare at that age. Even most women of 76 yrs old have lost a lot of thickness and have thin hair. Ronald Reagan was Blessed in the hair department until the end of his life.
Kirk’s son Michael is 79 and like his dad has a full head of hair. Great genes

Little did Dick know that he would live another 28 years!
The crazy thing is that a year before this interview, Kirk survived a helicopter crash that ended up killing 2 people and injuring him and 2 others.

Look at the singer Peter Cetera, formerly of the group "Chicago"....he has way more than Kirk and he's 75, also. It's unbelievable!
Of course genetics play a role, but you're pretty young. Your body might be trying to tell you something. Like poor blood flow, or deficiency in certain vitamins or minerals. Seriously, if you ignore the small warning signs...it could result in something more pronounced or serious.
Dick Cavett is the king of the gaff. Never a dull moment. Plenty of awkward ones.

Kirk Douglas seems like a decent guy. Excellent performances in Lust for Life (as Van Goh- sorry John Wayne), Paths of Glory, and Ace in the Whole among others.

He comes across at times as intentionally annoying and too sarcastic.
Douglas, however, was just fine.
Yes..I like many of his interviews,but in this one he appears to be hunting or pursuing scandal&gossip..And Kirk Douglas is way to smart,direct and classy for that kind of BS..
Cavett was always snarky and seemed to come from a condescending place, then blaming it on "the cards". Guess he was attempting to "pull something out", but it came across as obviously lazy and overbearing. Kirk Douglas was a very astute person, and wouldn't "take the bait". What a great life!
He had a pretty awkward interview with Eddie Murphy once too, it made him really look racist!
Ludwig Fan I didn’t particularly like the way Dick handled the K Douglas interview but that was an anomaly in my view.
He has always been an excellent interviewer.
As for Eddie Murphy I’ll check it out, but I doubt he showed racist tendencies.
I’ve always respected him for speaking plainly and asking probing questions.

Kirk was one of my favorites; I believed every line he ever spoke. It is interesting how little chemistry he has with Dick here, though, as Cavett's sarcasm goes right over his head at several points in the interview. Cavett was great when you could follow his train of thought, but that was not always easy.
I think Kirk chose to ignor it. Cavett actually makes himself sound like a gossip columnist with some of his questions and innuendo not the intellectual interviewer he is renowned for.

My folks had a liquor store and we catered many events in Northern Cal. I applied for and got a job in LA with a caterer when in college, 1969. had our own "mobile" bar set-up and served all kinds of drinks to celebs. always in private homes. Mr. Douglas, Mr. Lloyd Bridges, Lee Remmick (sp?)and Natalie Wood very, very graciously would come up to me when I was breaking down the bar at the end of an event and chat, asking me about my life and college and what I wanted to do with myself. Got to know them because many of the celebs. used us time and again...AND..they tipped me well during the evenings. My boss told me not to chat with them under any circumstance unless they approached me first. Period. Fired if caught doing so. Mr. Bridges helped me unload a 15 gallon keg from my van. Very nice gentleman. Paul Newman told me NOT to call him "Mr.Newman" because he said he would have to look around to see if his father was there...beer, beer, beer..he would nod at me, I'd race over with a can. long time ago...

Yes, the fight in 'Spartacus' with actor Woody Strode was possibly the best and most realistic of those 'Roman' type Gladiator fight scenes. -

I remember seeing Kirk in an episode of Tales from the Crypt with his other son Eric. That was a great episode, I believe it was called Yellow. He's finally reunited with his son now. RIP to both of them.

That’s a typical Cavett tactic. He got a lot of praise, back when he was a big noise on TV, for being not just “literate” (oh puhleez) but “irreverent” (translation: a jerk). He was able to be successful because at that time in this country we were at a place of great insecurity and self-hatred, which was fuel to him. He has never grown out of his need to embarrass a guest if he thinks there’s a chance of doing it.

Regarding John Wayne and the military...I am a huge John Wayne fan but as a U.S. Marine vet. there is a well known story that on one of his Pacific goodwill USO tours during WWII he went on stage to speak to a group of combat Marines and the Marines booed him so harshly they had to get Mr. Wayne out of the building...the job of fighting and dying is not a movie.
They probably asking why is he in a USO show and not in a real outfit. He wouldn't have an answer.
John Wayne had to quit football at USC because of a leg injury.
So, let's be careful who you disrespect when you don't even know the man.
He portrayed a man's man on screen and I read where was just like the man on screen. Get over your petty criticism. Ask Frank Sinatra's bodyguard. Lol
