    Nice mix of wood and composite for a great looking result.

      Cheers! I've been considering where else this could be applied as well. Perhaps as colored trim to wooden furniture?

    Thankfully I’m not too old to learn. That epoxy/fabric layup is an idea that I would have never thought of. The knife finished up nicely.

    Thank you for posting these videos, the work is excellent and gives me lots of great ideas to think about. The first knife I made this way was THE hardest! How about making more videos about pinning the tang all the way through the handle or even about peening a nut onto tang end and how to set into handle ends?! Thanks.

    Interesting - small world i used to work for Micarta - generally cured under high heat and pressure.
    Nice video

      +Bob Knothe yeah, it's kind of like Kleenex/paper tissues. A brand name that's come to describe layered composites like these.

    Hello, really a beautiful puukko, congratulations! What holds the handle in place? Is it just the epoxy glue? I can see there is no pins and no metal plate hammered at the end (pommel)! What did the old scandinavian knife makers use in the past? Thanks a lot!

  • @silent_bob_
    @silent_bob_ 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks nice! Not how sure how skookum the knife is though. I'd probably insert a brass pin or two through the handle and the tang.
    And it needs a matching sheath made from wood.

    Great technic! Grat! Have you any experience, is it enough strong for daily usages? Would you please to tell me, what kind of wood the darker? Thx

  • @chrisgedrim
    @chrisgedrim 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    It would be awesome to take the two other wooden pieces and make a sheath to match, dark wood-to-dark wood, light wood at each end

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, that could be cool. I've yet to make a sheath for this, though will likely go the route of a full leather sheath, not too fond of stiffer (wood, metal, kydex etc) ones myself.

    Great vid. Do you happen to remember the knife blank maker?

    • @SwitchAndLever

      Unfortunately not, I bought it from an online store, I think it was reasonably generic.

      It was bought, but can't quite remember from where, I had it for a while before making the knife.

    What was the brand of that varnish?
    Nice end result btw :)

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a polyurethane varnish made by Zar, don't remember exactly which one though. I've been using their products for some time, and I'm very happy with the result and durability of the finish.

      Thanks, but I guess what I really wanted to ask was also where you bought it in Sweden?

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gamingSlasher Nordsjö Idé & Design in Umeå had it, though I have no idea if it's part of their selection all over the country.

      Switch & Lever Hi Thanks for the vid looks great. I have a question about micarta... How do i treat a micarta handled knife? What can i use to seal the micarta so it i not shiny like just using epoxy but something that seals the micarta? Maybey some wax or leather treatmen? I dont want it to be slippery but seald , something that is thin but cures over night, kind of. I hope you understand my question, Thanks! Jag bor i Sverige så om det finns här någonstans får du gärna tipsa om vart jag kan köpa denna lack eller vad det nu är jag söker. Tack!

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Considering that micarta is completely impregnated by epoxy resin it is already "sealed" in a way. If you want to treat it you can varnish it with a polyurethane varnish, choose a matte finish if you want a bit more grip to it. Though, it will wear off. My recommendation would be to just work it with sandpaper until you get the desired texture and grip you want and leave it like that, no real need to seal it further.

    i know that you can pick up pre cut and shaped blades on the internet do you know where I could get any of these and any laws I should take into account when shipping to Europe??

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why don't you just buy them from within Europe? There are plenty of European stores online selling knife making supplies, including blades. Always follow your local knife laws.
