  • The thrilla in manila
Named Fight of the Year by The Ring in 1975
Named the #1 Fight of All-Time by The Ring in 1996.
ESPN's SportsCentury ranked the fight as the fifth greatest sporting event of all-time in 1999.
    Trivia
    Sports Illustrated Cover
The Philippines' first multi-level commercial shopping mall was named after Muhammad Ali as a tribute to his victory. The mall is named "Ali Mall" and is located in Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City right beside the Araneta Coliseum, which held the "Thrilla in Manila."
Despite the name, the bout was not held in Manila, but in adjacent Quezon City. Both cities, however, are within the district of Metro Manila.
President Ferdinand E. Marcos, along with First Lady Imelda Marcos, were on hand to watch the event. President Marcos sponsored the fight's purse.
The Philippines was under "Martial Law", declared by President Ferdinand Marcos, when the fight occurred.
    Quotes
"It’s gonna be a thrilla, and a chilla, and a killa, when I get the Gorilla in Manila." - Ali speaking about the upcoming fight.
"Man, I hit him with punches that'd bring down the walls of a city." - Frazier speaking about Ali after the fight.
"I'm gonna tell ya, that's one helluva man, and God bless him". - Ali speaking about Frazier after the fight.

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
    Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

What a back n forth WAR OF ATTRITION!
A Drama In Three Acts! Ali dominates early. Frazier evens up the fight in act two.
Act III-- Ali slowly-- almost imperceptively-- in the 11th round Muhammad Ali takes over and starts to give Joe Frazier a frightening beating especially in rounds 13 and 14. Angelo Dundee notices in Round 11 that Ali was starting to manhandle Frazier as early as the 11th round--noticing that Ali was able to walk Frazier off their clinches from the ropes to the center of the ring--but it really became pronounced every round after that. Especially in rounds 13 and 14.
Joe Frazier's manager and trainer Eddie Futch saw the incredible punishment Frazier was absorbing in rounds 11 12 and ESPECIALLY rounds 13 and 14.
Ali's punches as and aggregate were extremely damaging, having swelled Joe's eyes up to where Joe effectively couldn't see the punches coming.
Eddie knew it was going to be only more of the same in Round 15 and there was not going to be any "Miracle knock out".
Frazier was down at least three or four rounds at that point Frazier badly hurt in rounds 13 and 14 spitting blood in the corner.
Ali's punches closed Joe Frazier's eyes.
Eddie fudge knew he should not send anybody out to fight Muhammad Ali when his fighter can't see the punches coming.
Joe Frazier hurt battered on the stool knocked out on a technical knockout in the 14th round!
    WHAT A FIGHT.
What an incredible fight! Remember these guys were fighting in 100° Heat-- at least- ringside Joe Frazier claims ringside lights and the extra lights for the closed-circuit broadcast throughout the world had it closer to 110 115 degrees+++ with the high humidity of Manila the Philippine Islands these conditions make the fact that this was such a highly pitched battle for the entire fight all the more incredible. Both Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier were completely exhausted after this fight.

Eddie Dutch knew how badly Smoking Joe hated losing to Ali and when he saw the badly swollen, almost closed eye of Joe at the end of round 13 he nearly called it off but Joe protested "I will get him boss, just one more round,I can feel his tiredness"but the next round only worsened Joe's condition as he could hardly see Ali's lightening fast jabs and punches and Eddie Dutch wasn't having it no more "You know what Joe ,this is it" but a badly battered and swollen faced Joe needed protested "Noooooo"but a vastly experienced trainer in Eddie Futch knew he had to save his fighter from himself,he told him " Son no one will forget what you did in this ring tonight" having said that he waved off the fight to the extreme relief of Ali who was beyond exhaustion. Both men were never the same after the fight, they left a part of themselves in the ring that day

    • @carlmurray1781
      @carlmurray1781 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

It's Eddie Futch not Dutch, Futch made a big mistake by stopping this fight because Ali had quit after the 14th round and Dundee told him to just stay on your stool when the bell sounds for the 15th. Futch had put a spy near Ali's corner (Willie Monroe) and he was giving hand signals to Futch during the fight to indicate different things but when he tried to signal Futch that Ali had quit nobody from Frazier's corner looked over to him. Frazier would have won if only one of them had looked over, he just had to stand up for the last round to win the fight.

@@okaforogemdi5097 I stated that he was using hand signals to communicate, they do this in many sports including baseball and tennis. This information is well known in boxing and was mentioned in the documentary "thriller in manilla" the reporter confirmed the story with Angelo Dundee and Ali's doctor that Ali had indeed told him to cut the gloves off when he returned to his corner after the 14th round. He was totally spent after trying to finish off Frazier in that round. It's okay to be an Ali fan but facts are facts and you should at least research this.

At the end of the 14th round, the referee had to walk frazier back to his corner. Did you see that too? Just like crossing an old person to the other side of the street. Joe was in bad, bad shape. The fight had to be stopped. Futch did the right thing. Had he not, joe gets koed and maybe severely injured.

Ali was a polished fighter not a warrior. Joe Frazier was a warrior. Ali holding most of the fight. Frazier always the agressor very raely backing up till maybe the later rounds and even then always coming back in. I think Ali himself said he was about to quit after the 14 th round but Frazier's corner quit first. If this was 10 or 12 rounder, like most are today, Frazier wins. As i see it Frazier took the fight to Ali 10 or 11 of the rounds of this fight while Ali holding and grabbing the back of Frazier's head. The ref was constantly slapping Ali's glove off of Frazier's head. To me Joe was a beast all heart.

The fight was even after 10 Rounds Muhammad Ali won the 11th and 12th rounds and would have beaten Joe seven rounds to five had it only been a 12 round fight. Muhammad Ali gave Joe a frightening beating how do you think Joe's eyes got closed by Magic?? No it was constant constant pounding by Muhammad Ali that closed both of Joe Frazier's eyes and made it impossible for Joe to see the punches coming! Add on to that the brutal beating I only gave Joe in rounds 13 and 14 and there's no real argument about who won this best of the three trilogy

joe always the aggressor even based on the interview ali gave he was going to quit but joe quit first. watch the end of the fight lai on his stool you can see he was done and only joe quitting first gave him that fight in my opinion@@dylanchangedeverythingfore1312

Ali not a warrior ?, He is a man who facing Sonny Liston Twice, Floyd Patterson, George Foreman, Ken Norton 3 Times, Joe Frazier 3 Times, Earnie Shavers, Oscar Bonavena, Larry Holmes, and Ron Lyle.

@@muhammadfajri2687 you misunderstand - Ali was not a warrior in the sense to stand and go toe to toe with the big punchers he fought, he won using his head and using stick and move techniques while all of the fighters you mention stood in front of him and just kept coming forward, in my opinion they were warriors. They didn't hit and run they hit, got hit and kept coming forward.

@@dp6217 ok, but it sound like you make your own defintion of a "warrior", for me, Ali is a warrior because he never dodge anyone, he never avoid any fighter in any era. Nowadays we often hear about "fantasy fight", what happen if George Foreman face Earnie Shavers, or Joe Frazier against Sonny Liston. Ali face them all. Believe me, if Rocky Marciano didn't retire, Ali Will fight him.

@@Ffeoli1039 he apparently landed way more than enough by the last third of the fight Ali's punches had done so much damage to Joe that his face look like a gargoyle and his eyes were closed. The beating Ali put on Joe in the eleventh and Twelfth and especially for the 13th and the 14th round frightening to the point where Joe Frazier's face was more swollen than any face I've seen and his eyes were closed he was spitting blood between rounds Eddie futch God bless him saved Joe Frazier from more punishment Joe Frazier by that point was down in points by at least four or five points that was going to be no-win for Fraser there was going to be no Miracle knockout and Eddie saved Joe from another three minutes of severe punishment from Muhammad Ali as Eddie futch stated having been in the opposite corner of Muhammad Ali so many times Muhammad Ali always somehow reaches deep down in the 15th round and it would have been more of the same for Joe Frazier more incredible punishment in even possible injury or death so Eddie saved Joe Frazier definitely for more punishment and possible severe injury or even death.

IMO, this was ALi's last great fight---after this , it was all rope a dope and downhill. He really looked like a champ in this fight and he should've retired the year after instead of staying on til 1980 and having those depressing defeats. He might have avoided the parkinsons which was later to kill him. so sad.

When Frazier beat AlI in 1971 he was much faster. Towards the end of that fight he was beating AlI to the punch. As Frazier got older he came into fights heavier and relied on punching power. Both Ali and Foreman were stronger than Frazier in my opinion, they also had a 5” reach advantage, a 3.5” height advantage and better stamina.
