He could have been sacked for his initial propositioning of the 17 year old, news of which ended up on the front page of The Sun. Irrespective of the legality of his behaviour, I am 100% confident that his contract of employment would have had a clause stating that bringing his employer into public disrepute counts as gross misconduct. That's pretty standard in employment contracts.
Just ONE ex BBC employee on a £440,000 annual salary. Around 10 times the average UK salary. Outrageous. From now on my TV license annual fee will be used for something like paying my heating bill this winter. BBC can take a hike.

His arrest arose from an inquiry into another criminal's communications, not the Sun's allegations. BBC knew nothing about the inquiry he was arrested for. They can't fire someone just for being arrested, Edwards would have sued and won. But there are questions about why his arrest was never reported. The Cliff Richard debacle seems to have taken "news" media too far into the shadows. They clearly no longer report about any celebs who have been arrested before they're charged.
I didn't think that at the time - can't remember how Gary Glitter walked - but I did notice his body language in general. As he was walking towards the cameras, he put his hands out in front of him and kind of clapped. There was certainly a whiff of arrogance about him. His head certainly wasn't hanging in shame, it was held high. Almost as if he was enjoying the attention. A very sorry state of affairs.
At man city, as soon as Mendy was charged with rape, they stopped his salary on the basis he'd brought the organisation into disrepute (even if subsequently found not guilty). BBC should've done the same for someone who bought a video of child (between 7 and 9) rape. Even if he'd been found not guilty, his behaviour still brought the BBC into disrepute.
I'm sorry to say that Hew Edwards won't be going to prison because he'll take the coward's way out first. If I recall this has happened to other celebrities over the years.
Lisa Nandy is out of her depth, she should be calling the bbc executives to account for their handling of this matter. Tim Davey should be hauled in front of a commons select Committee.
