2023 Tesla Model 3 review: Should this EV be Australia's favourite electric car?

  • For this review we're taking a look at what is currently the best-selling EV in Australia - the Tesla Model 3.
Not only that, but we're looking at its most popular version - the entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive.
Now competing with an extensive list of rivals which include everything from the Nissan Leaf to the Polestar 2 - Does the Model 3's (now wearing a before-on-roads price-tag of A$65,500) latest update keep it front of the pack?
Tom White finds out whether you should opt for this one, or whether it's worth upgrading to a Long Range, or even the just-launched Model Y. Either way, keep a lookout for those waiting lists, because they are both over a year long!
With a driving range of 491km, and a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 6.1 seconds, there's certainly a case to be made for the base Model 3, paticularly as it's also one of the most of the most efficient electric cars on the market, too. Watch the full review to see if the Model 3 is still everything it's cracked up to be.

9:38 Good drivers just drive. You set everything up before you set off. Every function you need on the go, changing radio station, song, temperature setting, opening rear and side cameras, work through the excellent voice control system.

Also forgot to mention that the LPF batteries in this base M3 can charged to 100% every time. Which offers maximum range for your daily drive.

Great review. Coming from a 2011 Outback 2.5 CVT Premium (which was great), I picked the LR model (Ryzen/Radar), before the recent price and interest rate increases - absolutely *love it*. Sound system is very nice, the all wheel drive is sensational and Subaru-like in the rain. Best of all the responsiveness is like nothing I've ever driven, feels like a GSXR600 in ability to accelerate to gaps between other cars in traffic.
Ability to schedule heater in the morning is priceless for recent Melbourne winter weather. And on sunny days, I have free charging from PV panels. Love it.

I'm confused. You stated that you need to look to the screen to make "button" adjustments, such as - wipers, lights, music, etc. Is the voice control broken/disabled on the model that you drove?

10:38 "You've got to remember this car is really heavy" - compared to what? it weighs 1760 kg, the Audi A4 1745kg, BMW , Mercedes Benz C220 1722kg, Lexus ES 1680kg (1740kg in hybrid form),
It's a myth that the Tesla model 3 a heavyweight - especially compared to the modern mid-size SUV for example the Audi Q5 40 tdi (2045kg).

Could have been a great review, but failed terribly when explaining the controls as hard to use while keeping eyes on the road, I never ever touch the screen while driving, I talk to the car and request exactly what I want, that is the whole point of it, missing this is a massive fail.

I ordered my Tesla Model 3 RWD on Dec 24th 2021 (delivered early March 2022). We have an old second hand 2013 LEAF which has served us well, so before buying the Tesla I compared it to the LEAF+ (as you need the 60kW version to even come close). Here in NZ the LEAF+ was more expensive than the M3 RWD. Comparatively the LEAF is a more flexible hatch back (versus the model 3s boot) but otherwise the Model 3 is the better car (better performance, better range, better technology and importantly a liquid cooled battery pack). Don't regret buying the Tesla and look forward to every opportunity to drive it!

    Glowing review thanks.
Don't get me wrong, I too love the Tesla Model 3 and am about to order one. But sorry, this "review" did all seem a bit of an advertising promotional video. Very little mention is made of the other choices on the market, with practically no comparison of features, performance, range, quality, etc.
At 1:40 where you compare it with other makes, you fail to mention the MG ZS EV or the BYD Atto 3, both of which are WAY cheaper, for nearly all the same features. Not to mention the upcoming MG4 and Atto 4. The MG4 is tipped to be almost $30K cheaper than the Model 3!
You compare the 3 with the "rivals" Hyundai and the Leaf, saying they "can't compete on the value front" - but boy the Chinese rivals you fail to mention certainly can!
"It's the best value for money EV money can buy at the moment" (16:10).....I'm not sure an MG EV owner, having paid just over $47K, with 7 year vehicle waranty, would agree.

Thanks for such an honest informative review. Finally a reviewer that fairly compares apple with apples instead of all of these reviewers that claim other electric vehicles like the EV6 and Ionic to name a couple are cheaper and better value when in fact they are not and don't have the same or even comparable specifications. I feel you definitely get more bang for your buck with a Tesla Model 3 and the fact you get over the air updates for the life of your Tesla means your car is always up to date and forever changing for the best so that's got to be a good thing. No car is perfect thats for sure and you never know one day Elon just might add a Head Up Display which would be awesome. Thanks for such a great review. 😊

A very good review. Having owned the M3 Long Range for three years I have discovered that the real range is about 490 kms (not 620 as claimed by Tesla). Unless the 2023 rear wheel drive version has a 75 kW battery its true range would be nowhere near 490 kms. I can also say that it is not necessary to move one's whole head to see the car's speed as it is just to the left of the steering wheel. Although I agree that physical controls would be an advantage, it is not true to say that everything needs to be done through the screen. The wipers can be activated via the left stalk as well as various adjustments that can be made via the two scroll wheels and voice commands. Most of what needs to be done via the screen are once only adjustments. To me the advantage of the Long Range version is it's actual longer range and not so much the performance or better handling. The M3 does have true one pedal driving as the brake pedal only needs to be used when traffic lights change when the car is too close to them or if another car acts unpredictably.

Great review Sam. However, where are its rivals that you thought were imminent? Not wanting to have a go at you, but why is it that nearly all the other EV car companies only drip feed us their cars. And don't say it is because we don't have a fuel standard to force them. Whenever that turns up, I bet will hardly make a difference. I think it is in fact because only Tesla and BYD are serious about making EVs for any market. Everyone else is having a bet each way and are not really biting the bullet. They are really giving Tesla and BYD free kick after free kick after free kick. It will be soon too late and they won't be able to catch up.

Not interested at any price, and certainly not at a premium over something like a zs ev where there's no major cock up in the ergonomic design except for the left side indicators, which is not picking compared to the Tesla "no line of sight Speedo".
For goodness sake Mazda has HUD in a car 25000 cheaper, and Tesla could not be bothered even doing a normal Speedo??? It's just change for change sake.

I can’t believe cars like this are legal. Having to turn your head to look at everything, but especially critical things like your speed, just beggars belief. They’re not clever, innovative or smart. It’s just lazy design (aesthetically there’s very little design work), and cheap.

Gas or Electric , Trading one pollutant ... for another. These special types of electrical batteries used to propel these cars and trucks are highly toxic and a constant fire hazard. Infact many homeowners insurance companies will not insure you if you park a electric cars or truck in your garage, plus electric car insurance itself is higher because of high fire risk.
