Have you found any of those old wives' tales your grandmother used to tell you to be true? Obviously, most old wives' tales are just tales. Money spiders don’t bring money, eating yam won't cause you to have twins, and itchy palms can hardly make you rich. On the other hand, there are some old wives' tales that are surprisingly true. To find out what old wives' tales are not that far off the mark, check out these 25 Old Wives' Tales That Are Actually True.

My favourite is "If you see ten troubles coming towards you, eight will run into the ditch before they get to you, one will turn out to be a blessing in disguise, and only one of them you actually have to deal with". I have found that this is VERY true!

No, you can feel the pressure dropping. The sad part is... I had to tell you that. It's extremely basic meteorology, like so basic the weather man feels it's appropriate for general public consumption...and that's pretty basic. 🤣

Babies too. During a hurricane, when pressure drops are greater, women who are 8 months or more pregnant, are encouraged to go to a medical shelter, or to shelter at the hospital. The lower pressure can bring on labor.

The correlation between dental problems and pregnancy is well known. That is why, in the UK, pregnant women get free dental check ups/treatment. The OWT about red sky at night is very old. When I first heard it though, (in the UK) it was "red sky at night shepherds delight, red sky in the morning shepherds warning". The explanation of why this happens is also very true. I sometimes get aching bones when we are due damp weather but I can also smell when it's going to rain. Everyone laughs at me but I am nearly always right.

This is definitely true. Baby steals nutrients from mom’s body and mom must consume extra nutrients for baby or the nutrients will come from the mothers bones and other parts of mothers body. Alot of pregnant women have dental problems when they never had dental problems before pregnancy. Sometimes dental problems can be so bad that it can lead too dentures or partials

Old wives tale that proved true:
I was 7 and my mother was expecting my little brother. She was 8 months along. It was time to can the garden tomatoes and my great grandmother told Mama to skip canning that year or give them to a neighbor to can, because if she did she would lose every jar since tomatoes canned while pregnant never sealed properly. Mama said there was no way she was missing out on her huge harvest of tomatoes. So she canned her tomatoes. 6 weeks later, postpartum, I remember watching my mama chuck 108 quarts of tomatoes, jars and all into a 55 gallon drum for disposal, as she wept bitterly about her lost tomatoes. Grandma said, I warned you. Was heartbreaking at the time seeing her so upset, but we laughed hard about it later.

That's true for raw, unpasteurized honey, but the stuff sold in most grocery stores in North America, like "Billy Bee Honey", is processed, and often mixed with high fructose corn syrup or other ingredients (that for some reason, they don't have to include on the label. 🙄) It loses a lot of its healing powers, unfortunately. The tips and "health hacks" posted around social media rarely specify which type, or how much. (Same with cinnamon, which has some great medicinal qualities. Benefits increase IF you buy the less kind (Ceylon) from a health food store. The type sold in a bottle or pouch in the store is the cheaper, and therefore more popular type of cinnamon (Cassia), and is good for helping to regulate blood sugars in diabetics. )

It's like this, you have to make men work for you, to court you properly. Take pride in yourself, and demand your man take you seriously and respect you enough to wear a suit and tie for you... otherwise you will keep meeting beta males and losers who think that swiping left or right makes him a stud as opposed to approaching a table of women in a bar.

@@normalaird8262 yes... you are right, character is more important than the surface things... unfortunately, it's hard to wear your character on your sleeve...
In general, (I never said all women), women tend to like men who know how to present themselves. This gets you in with more women than not.
You are confusing Marketing with Sales. I am speaking of marketing, getting your foot in the door. After that, it's up to the salesperson in-store to sell the product. That's where someone's personalty and character shines through.
The reason you need to market yourself, is because, a typical woman gets approached in bars often, and they need some sort of defence mechanism to weed out the weak so they don't waste their entire night with some "nice guy" who just not going to try and "close the deal". (and ladies, you know what I am speaking of). This is why women will give a guy many sh!t tests when he approaches her in a bar. She is trying to see what kind of character he has. This is, again, where the marketing comes in... dressing like a slob won't get you very far with most women, in fact it will be the first sh!t test a guy typically fails. If a woman rejects you for dressing in jeans and a t-shirt, shame on you. If a woman rejects you for dressing up nicely, then shame on her.
For a woman to say these things doesn't matter, tells me that she isn't used to being approached in bars that often and her options are limited, therefore, she has less standards.... and is not the person that any male wants or should take advice from.

I would agree with you on matters such as faith...you cannot just talk the talk you MUST walk the walk, day in and day out, until it is your life and resides in your heart.
I disagree, though, in many other areas. WORDS can:
      - Communicate with our comrades, our opposition, & those of neutrality
      - Stop wars
      - Prevent misunderstandings
      - Change world views
      - Bring hope to the hopeless
      - Calm the distraught
      - Mend broken hearts
      - Educate the pupil
      - Create: Literally anything you can think of, your own sandbox on paper!
      - And for those of use who desperately need it, take use to another place for a while, to be someone else, in a different life, with different challenges and burdens, in a whole different plane of existence...so we can get a much needed respite without having to leave our house or our body. And THAT, Shari Chambers, is the incredible power of talk of WORDS. And yes, I believe the pen more powerful than the sword. I believe it to be the most powerful tool Humanity possesses...
To set aside the pen and take up the sword, is easy to do. But, think long and hard, first. The cost is only our humanity.

"In a separate study comparing Buckwheat Honey with Manuka, scientists found that Buckwheat honey had greater antioxidant activity than Manuka, and exhibited equivalent antibacterial activity against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Both honeys show great abilities to restrict the growth of bacteria in lab conditions.
However Buckwheat could fight some bacteria that Manuka could not. A recent study found that buckwheat honey is more effective than over the counter cough syrup at treating coughs in children! Buckwheat has also been shown to improve heart health, help manage glucose levels, and is gluten free and non-allergenic."

I agree with you. Before I retired, the wound care doctors, at the hospital where I worked, were using manuka honey on wounds. They were getting success, especially in wounds that had MRSA.

This list is one of my favorite ones so far. I'm a 60 year old woman from down South, and my Mama was born and raised in Fountain Inn, South Carolina. She and my Aunties were always spouting off some kind of Old Wives Tale. And since my Mama was the youngest, they were mostly old, and eithe.r married or widowed. So I thought it meant just the group of them talking and spouting something off whenever anything happened to cause them to say something they had memorized. Almost like they were afraid that if they didn't, something bad would happen to them.
Most of your list I knew, but there were a few that I had never heard of in my life. I love learning something new. Thank you. I love your show!!

I think the term "actions speak louder than words" does not allude so much to hand or body gestures' being more communicative than speech; rather, it refers to how one's actual behavior --- i.e., behaving himself, keeping his word, checking up on you to see if you need anything, etc. --- is a much more convincing/meaningful indication of one's caring and honesty than his just verbally professing to be such a great person. (And of course, the reverse can be true, also --- you may hear really bad things about someone from certain folks who do not happen to like him for whatever reason, but then if he treats you exceptionally well, you can figure that most likely those public-smear comments are just idle rumors, and should be discounted. Many times, people who are jealous of someone with superior morals will badmouth him just to make themselves feel less inadequate.) It's kind of like someone's claiming to be very reliable about paying back a loan --- the only way to determine if he is truly that conscientious is to see if he regularly comes to you with actual cash, rather than flimsy excuses.

@Aurora Ackley , That's true for raw, unpasteurized honey, but the stuff sold in most grocery stores in North America, like "Billy Bee Honey", is processed, and often mixed with high fructose corn syrup or other ingredients (that for some reason, they don't have to include on the label. The type sold in a bottle or pouch in the store is the cheaper, and therefore more popular type of cinnamon (Cassia), and is good for helping to regulate blood sugars in diabetics. )

Later they told me that "poop flows downhill" means people above you in the hierarchy keep all the good stuff for themselves and pass the bad stuff like unpleasant tasks to the lower-downs.
Thing is, Dad was a plumber. When a big part of your job involves keeping the toilets working and the pipes running, "poop flows downhill" is literally a useful thing to keep in mind.

Usually they were talking about how Grand Marsh would grow into a city. What they talked about, usually was where the money would / should be spent - - more especially by whom. I heard long & boring (to me) conversations about who should advance the village's growth (with money invested).

Also, unflavored meat tenderizer. Poison ivy or other plant irritants: Dawn dishwashing liquid (yes, brand matters). (Mild) jellyfish sting: vinegar and ice, and take aspirin. If it’s on a lot of your body or face and neck, see a doctor, quickly.

Christine Ming I don’t think this is a good idea. You get venom in your mouth and it’s still in the flesh of the victim. You can remove a bee by gently sliding a pocketknife (or credit card) under the bee, front to back. This can dislodge the stinger from the skin without breaking the sac that injects the venom into the body. Doesn’t work with killer bees. Idk how to save yourself from them.

Rubbing alcohol on a sting as soon as possible will reduce the "poison" and the size of the bump. I've done it and it works!

As for the catching more flies line, an old farmer’s trick for catching flies around the apple orchard involves mixing honey and vinegar in water in jugs and hanging them in the trees.

Another method of catching flies involves coordination and well broken-in baseball mitt.

I love a man in jeans and a t-shirt.... I found out a long time ago, that most of these "Old wives tales" had truth to them, I taught them to my children, who are now passing them on to their own children. I never waited for, or had to find out from scientist that they were true! Love you Mike and Tristan ❤️💙💖💞💕

Besides scientists don't know everything. They are even fond of telling us how much they don't know.

Shorts and a hoodie make a man really grotesque, especially in Congress.

In 1958, I got dressed in maternity clothes to go shopping with Grandmother. She took one look at me and asked if I was going out dressed like that? I told her that my dress was clean. She answered that people would know what I had been doing???😅

I'm only 37 and have arthritis in my ankle and wrist. They always start hurting when the pressure drops 🙁

Yep, I'm with ya! I'm 37 as well, and the knee injury I got when I was 10, the tailbone injury I got at 13, and my arthritis in my hands, let me know when it's about to rain!

@@NN-ir9bjI fractured my wrist twice once in my sleep (metal daybeds are very bad if you toss and turn a lot). I fractured my ankle once and have sprained both ankles more times than I can remember now. I also hurt my shoulder a few years ago when I feel in my parent's kitchen landing on my back, stupidly thought I was okay so I didn't go to the hospital. I was not okay. It turns to hell once winter hits, I feel like my entire body is trying to kill me. I need to move someplace warm...
