This is far from a traditional way to make a basket. As far as I know there wouldn't be any glue involved but when you decide to make one from short pieces of scrap then there is no other option. It came out pretty good (I'm very happy with it) but like most things that are tried first time, I could do a better job next time. :) If you would like to edit the subtitles and improve the viewing for others, you can do that here th-cam.com/users/timedtext_video?ref=share&v=xb4Fu4DnC04
Reminds me of the "Truffle Basket" my Mum had in the 1950's, made from strips of wood. True, there wasn't any glue involved, but there sure were plenty of nails that eventually went rusty and stained it. I think your design is great!
The video was great! You came at the project from a totally different angle and yet not traditional, it looks the part, fits the function and form. I am just wondering if yours is as strong as a traditional basket would be. I can't see it taking the abuse a basket is forced to endure over the years but then again, maybe yours is stronger! When you were putting the actual basket together I was thinking uffda, then as it came together I was pondering if that glue holds the flexing the basket will endure, then it may last just as long as its traditional cousin. Well done and fun to watch how you solve these issues. Loved the jig to sand the short lengths. Finished project looked great.
This is fast becoming my favourite woodworking channel... No fuss, straight to the point, well edited, not over complicated, and with amazing scrap wood ideas that I don't see any other channel doing.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection th-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Even the smallest pieces can be cut to make wedges, wood nails or patches (provided that the grain is good), not to mention for that moment when you need to prop something up a few cm off the ground or space something, having a bag of scrap wood chunks handy is a life saver.
Next time you are bending strips like these you can even put a wet cloth between the hot stick and the wood. It will keep the thin wood from drying so quickly and steam also penetrates the wood instanteniously. I am a violin maker and this is how you bend the ribs. Awesome project otherwise, I love it!
That's a luverly pick-a-nic basket Yogi !!!!!! Well done, I see the dogs are ready for a picnic, should be hours of fun for your daughter. Another top project and all the best from very soggy Townsville !
One person's scrap wood is another person's project wood. Great job. Reminds me of a picnic basket my folks had when I was very young. Thanks for the video!
I have to agree. You are a very patient man. This is an awesome build and I think you might have outdone yourself on this scrapwood challenge episode👌🏾. My hat's🎩 off to you Neil.
I've always enjoyed making things, but even that feeling doesn't compare to the joy and satisfaction in seeing someone use them (or even if used by myself). Your daughter seems very happy with her basket.
It's a beauty! I use a cheap pine strip woven basket for my spoon-carving stuff, and it's my goal to one day make a nice one. The craftsmanship in the traditional ones is very inspiring.
i was having the worst day ever and i sat down in my uni’s library to start my homework and saw this and my day got instantly so much better, i have a whole dance that i do along with the intro song and honestly it made my day so much better

The only way to make a picnic basket is the way it works and that picnic basket works. It’s beautiful and the fact that it was made from scrap makes it that much more incredible. As always it was a pleasure to watch you work. Awesome basket man.
That really turned out well - good design and excellent use of scrap wood. It's amazing how many things you have been able to craft out of this scrap wood.
Nice work. So good to see you using Camphor Laurel. It is such an under-rated timber. So many people think of it as simply a weed tree and dismiss the timber. On the whole, it is full of character and can be used for many things. It does have some inconsistency I find in terms of density and hardness, but in general, it's pretty cheap anyway, so it's worth the risk - and then it comes down to using the appropriate piece to suit what you want to achieve.
Internet has shown me endless variations on how to make a box out of wood. This is not only nice on the eyes, but it looks very practical. Thanks, Neil!
Awesome Idea, very good design, great video ! It's a great way to upcycle short pieces of scrapwood... Especially as a guitar maker, I might have quite a few that are already pretty much at the right thickness... And I can't do much guitar related things with them anyway. I'm just reluctant to bring any fire torch in my shop... Still, next Christmas, everyone gets a basket !
Excellent video! I've had a similar basket idea floating around in my head for a while, seeing you do it encourages me to make it happen. The hot bar bending with the piece of metal on the outside is a great idea. Wood bends by compressing the fibres on the inside of the bend, if you try to stretch the fibres on the outside of the bend, it will break.
Brilliant. I've watched every one of your videos in the last two weeks, since I found your channel. You're a legend. Your joinery, camera direction and video editing are all top tier.
Yep! Another cracking build! Well done Neil. I confess, had it not been for having already seen the outcome on Instagram, I would never have thought it would have turned out as well as it did. Great job!
When weaving the sides it looked like you where wrestling a giant spider.. then I thought back to the big snake you showed off and thought.. right.. Australia.. you probably have those everywhere. ;) Any who wonderful.. you always amaze at your process.
What a truest wonderful build! I am so impressed with what you make with few simple materials and tools. Genius comes in many forms and you sir, are the real deal!
I think barrel spacers between the handle screws on the handle would be a good idea. Prevent over tightening (and allowing you to fully tighten) while decreasing friction completely. Cool looking basket!
Hello from Minnesota USA, where it is a balmy -27 C today. You are a talented and creative maker, and I love your vids. Looking forward to your next project.
That looks really lovely. I have no idea where you get your ideas but they keep coming and they still look great when you finish! Carry on the good work 😊
If you ever make another, make the base in the same way you made the two lids before cutting them. If you do that, then you can insert the strips in the sides of that and make the bottom and the line much neater and sturdier. That's how some of the old French panniers i saw when i was a kid used to look like. Tho, those used crushed reeds or something like that for siding with strips as horizontal liners.
Enhorabuena y gracias.

you have far more patience than I. loved the video but I won't be attempting this for the sake of my sanity. :D

Wons Ung ~I know right... I mean, how many chopping boards does the world need? Hehheh

If your scrap wood challenge series has taught me anything, it's that there's no such thing as scrap wood. Looks great!
Even the smallest pieces can be cut to make wedges, wood nails or patches (provided that the grain is good), not to mention for that moment when you need to prop something up a few cm off the ground or space something, having a bag of scrap wood chunks handy is a life saver.
Not at all.. even wood chips and saw dust is usable. That's what particle board and wood pellets are made from.
And you can never have too many clamps.
Who looks a that pile of wood and says "You know...there's a picnic basket in there" ? Pask, that's who. Cheers! Chris.

Franta Špidlen thanks from us that read the comments!
Thanks very much for the tip! :)
instanteniously?
@@jonhohensee3258 guessing they meant instantaneously. English may not be their first language but it was understandable enough. :)

If there ever comes a Nobel Prize for scrapwood ideas you are the man to beat.
Amazing work. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate! :)
The most patient maker in the business. I am consistently amazed by your work.
As someone who makes traditional Mi'kmaq baskets, I'm impressed. Always cool seeing how other people tackle things, baskets especially.
That's a luverly pick-a-nic basket Yogi !!!!!! Well done, I see the dogs are ready for a picnic, should be hours of fun for your daughter. Another top project and all the best from very soggy Townsville !
Thanks very much Gary! My wife and daughter both love it! I didn't realise you're getting rain up there, we need some desperately! :)
Something so beautiful from what is essentially firewood... Love these challenges
Really nice idea cobber. It great to see all the ideas you come up with for all that scrap. Keep it up
This must be the most valuable picnic basket I have ever seen. Wonderful labor of love and inspiration to others. Thank you Pask!
One person's scrap wood is another person's project wood. Great job. Reminds me of a picnic basket my folks had when I was very young. Thanks for the video!

You are a master of your craft. I don't get impressed all that often but the way you work with wood is impressive.
I've always enjoyed making things, but even that feeling doesn't compare to the joy and satisfaction in seeing someone use them (or even if used by myself). Your daughter seems very happy with her basket.
That was great. Something most people wouldn't think of
Every. Single. Video. You amaze me with your creativity, skill, and ingenuity. I look forward to seeing what you create next.
Man, you quickly became my favourite youtube maker. The scrapwood challenge projects are blowing my mind every time. Thank you.
I thought it was perfect. Thanks for sharing your talents.
Отличный способ экономить дерево! Корзина красивая получилась!
Your creativity knows no bounds. Fabulous idea and brilliant result!

Neil thats outstanding. Hats off.
That was fantastic! What a crazy amount of work, but it turned out just great. I know my wife would love for me to make one! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate! You’d better make her one!😉

Scrapwood challenge is bar none the best build series ... keep up the great work, can't wait to see what you find in the pile next.
Вы так красиво и с душой работаете! И у Вас получаются отличные изделия! Мне очень нравится смотреть, как вы это делаете! Спасибо!😀
You have outdone your self. Great job!!!!
People who put thumbs down to this video should be banned from TH-cam. This is an absolute craftsmanship with ingenuity. This man is a genius.
subtext for this build was 'lets see if i can use all the spring clamps in this build' :D
Great video Pask. Once again, reminding us that you can make anything you set your mind to.
Possibly the only camphor laurel picnic basket in existance. I have never seen a hardwood picnic basket. Beautiful work sir.
There wouldn't be too many of them Ross! ;)
Awesome. I really appreciate it when you put your problems and solutions in.

Once again, Neil, you have made a veritable silk purse from the sow's ear. I enjoyed that build a lot. Thanks.
A basket that Yogi Bear would be proud to pilfer.
Ah yes, the "pic-a-nic" basket...
Boo Boo: I don't know Yogi, Mister Ranger might not like that. ;-)
Thank you, you just made my day 😄

Absolutely Sven, it is fantastic wood to work with and as you said has some interesting character! :)
I think that's your best scrap-wood challenge yet.
Wow. That really came out beautiful. Nice job.
I love it. You are like Diresta Down Under. Absolutely a marvelous build.
Nicely done Pask & it looks like that basket is going to hold up really well.
Thanks Steve - it's surprisingly very sturdy! :)
Another success as far as I can tell. Liking the variety you expend on with every new project.

Excelente trabajo, maestro!
Felicidades y gracias por compartir sus conocimientos estoy aprendiendo mucho de usted. Saludos desde Querétaro, México.
I love watching what you do with scrap wood but this has to be a favourite. Really nicely done and totally functional. Well Done.
Very nice piece for a first try. Steam is the trick for making the wood pliable.
Great one Neil!!!! Love it!!😁🌲

I sure could go for a decent sized hamper after watching that. Excellent job!
Very Cool process on how you made this picnic basket Sir. I really enjoyed watching you making it.
Never underestimate scrapwood. Nice job!
Excellent video, it was so satisfying to watch. 👍
