For a long time, I've wanted to attempt an epoxy table. I wanted to throw in a twist though, and I figured what better way than to take some free pallet wood to dump some very expensive epoxy onto. Being my first epoxy table, there were some inevitable mistakes made along the way.
Some things I should have done differently:
    1. The individual planks had some warping, especially after burning. I should have tied the boards together with some inlays on the bottom or domino joints to create one flat board prior to burning. This would have made it easier to control the warping.
    2. I planed off too much depth with the router when I was flattening the table. This put a lot of strain on the router bit, and I also accidentally cut into a part of the table where the wood was sticking up higher than the rest.
    3. Ideally, I should have done a coat of table top epoxy on top of the deep pour epoxy. This would create a more durable outer coat.
This was definitely a challenging project for me, but I learned SO much. I'd love to know what you think about this kind of project, since it is a different concept than my usual furniture makeover/restoration videos.
If you liked this video, please give it a like, it helps me a lot!! :)
    - Andy

The desk looks fab. The scorched look is something people either love or hate, and I love it. It's an amazing birthday present, but it's not just the money spent on the products but the time and effort you put into this project that also needs to be appreciated. I hope you got more than a pair of socks for your birthday 🤣.

  • @tessiepinkman
    @tessiepinkman 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +68

The desk is a masterpiece. I've never been much for the whole epoxy trend that's going around on TH-cam, but I love charred wood, and the fake "amber" you made just did something to this table that made me LOVE IT. You did it so tastefully, so many others just pour gallons after gallons of either epoxy with color in it, or just clear epoxy - and the epoxy just shows too much. You used it to make a table useful, you shaved down the epoxy as close to the wood as possible which made the wood the focal point, not the epoxy - which is what most people on TH-cam just do not do. I really loved the result. It's *gorgeous* - but what else could I expect from you? You're a wizard when it comes to making furniture!

Just beautiful! Of course. I always love your projects. 😊
If you're ever commissioned to do something like this again with epoxy, you might look into the Nanotech finish (cant remember what it's called) that Blacktail uses. It's expensive but supposed to be crazy durable and it's gorgeous. And pallets are a fantastic wood source. Because they often come from overseas they can use woods like mahogany which is very inexpensive there. Just be careful because they are also treated with some nasty chemicals.

Andy, what a gorgeous table. And the wood was free!
Kinda reminds of when back in the mid-80's,
    I bought a beautiful Hawaiian dress($78)
and all the accoutrements ($100+), on sale at Saks Fifth Avenue. Well, that outfit turned into a 2 week vacation in Acapulco for $$$. So, free wood and a marked down dress ends up costing a lot more what you started with. But boy, did I have some fun. And in that little cocktail dress, I looked as hot as the amber in the charred wood, with a smokin' tan too. Well done Andy, well done.

I might add that my husband and I have been writing poetry both for over 30 years and I have been doing jewelry design for over 20, so I know poetry when I see it, I think I can say confidently. What amazes me is the symbolic depth in this. Dragon stuff, heroism, for starters. The story of making it was as good as the product. You have very sure taste and I think you can trust that going into the future. Technically, you might have preferred this or that, or done something differently, but in the end it does not matter; the sumptuous beauty shines through a perfect table. Bravo. I think I see a winner here. :)

Working with epoxy seems to have that same numbing effect on most people's creativity. I don't doubt that using it will make this your #1 viewed video though. Hope to see you back doing more interesting stuff again soon!

Well done, another amazing project. I'm not usually a fan of epoxy because of the rediculous amount of waste generated, loved the gold details - they look like molten lava amongst the black char. Creativity is all about trying, you learn from everything, especially the mistakes!

Wow. Everything you conceive of has style. What an amazingly cool desk!

That’s quite a fossil that you have created. And as an additional bonus you have enough ‘snow’ for the local Holiday Pageant.

When you sealed the charred wood with epoxy I was like ‘omg I need to do this’. Then watching you router down the slab I reconsidered 😂

It came out really nice. Don't feel bad about the imperfections, they gave the table character. a lot of modern furniture is way too perfect looking and soulless.

Beautiful desk! Oh, and thanks for the reminder why I never want to do epoxy. Take care & stay safe.

Beautiful, beautiful work. This was an interesting video for many reasons: Using pallet wood (good for planet), learned about epoxy, & caulking is the thing I am afraid of & professionals totally make it look easy! You have a lucky brother to be gifted this lovely table.

You are simply incredible!! I don't know your age, but you are certainly decades younger than myself and you have some serious skills, young man!!! I bet your parents are blown away proud of you! Thank you for filming your masterpieces with all of us. 💜❤

So beautiful. My carpenter and grandson are working on an epoxy table top connected to my 12 foot work table. I’m a 75 yr old grandma and am so excited waiting for it to be finished.🤗🤗💕

Great job, Andy, especially since working with epoxy is not your usual 'thing'. I do appreciate the creative thinking behind this desk, and in my opinion, I reckon the amber turned out quite well. Looks like liquid amber in this case, and that's cool.

Wow !! Very much impress how you come up with this concept. It also takes endurance, perseverance, and a lot of patience. Great job, very nice desk for your brother. Love the videography. Take care, thanks 😊

Really wonderful work as always. I love the scorched look, personally. While watching you (and your room) get absolutely snowed in by shavings.. I just couldn't help laughing not because of the mess.. but because I was dying at the imagined thought of your brother giving you a $50 target gift card for your next birthday. 😂
