You saved me! I walked across the street with a 100 foot extension, set up my sockets that only work on 2.4ghz and boom, they connected! Thank you so much, my 7 year old grandson is very happy to have Alexa turn on and off his bedroom light as he's scared to walk into a dark room. Yayy, you are awesome!
Thanks! This worked except I didn’t want to walk outside, so instead I tried to put my phone in a toaster oven with the door halfway open. The metal shielding was enough to bump it down to 2.4Ghz. I was able to set up the smart plug reaching in to oven to my phone.

Once you walk back to the house, to set up your devices, won't the phone jump back into 5 Ghz? My devices jump out of pairing mode very quickly. I'm concerned they will be out of pairing mode before I get far enough. Suggestions?
Yea your device needs to stay in pairing mode. It may help to have someone at home make sure it stays in pairing mode. If you’re able to find the point that your phone switches to the 2.4 band, you can walk there pretty quickly.

This is great! Just switched to Google fiber. Instead of walking down the street I went and crouched in the room farthest away from the router with a few walls in between and I was able to get the final few stubborn devices to connect! Thank you for figuring this out!
I thought the Wi-Fi would automatically switch back to 5.0 ghz. When moved closer to it ? It just stays on the 2.4 ??? didn’t know that . Great video . Simple fix to the Mesh router problem! Worked perfectly and I was able to get my wife to set up Zmodo cameras at our home in Perth Australia while I am stuck in Singapore due to COVID 19 restrictions.

This video helped me to connect my G2 gateway to my smart lock. I simply changed my wifi connection on my phone from 5G to 2.4G and it worked instantly. My next step is to reconnect my phone back to 5G and see if the 2.4G connection is saved on the device; it would be great if it works. I have a TP-Link router which doesn't allow me to use different SSID to distinguish the difference between the 2 which is a shame
Dude! You saved my life! I’ve been trying to get this figured out for weeks now. I even bought all new lights because I thought the old ones were broken. Turns out, all I had to do was go into my bedroom where one of my mesh transmitters was connected (far enough away to be on 2.4 GHz) and reconnect my phone from there. I’m glad it worked for you! Even more glad you didn’t have to walk as far away as some people have. I’ve heard some people say they just went into a closet and got it to work. Whatever you have to do to get a weak signal I guess. Anyway, glad to hear it worked!

So once you have reconnected on the weak 2.4 signal your phone will stay on that connection so you can return to your home and set up the device? Or do you somehow have to remotely set it up while you are still far from the house?
Tried this method to set up some bulbs and did not work, however, I set a "hot spot"with my phone and worked like a charm. Just another way if anyone else is having issues.
Great process. I didn't get to test it (yet) but was lucky enough to have an extender that runs at 2.4 and linked it to my Mesh, giving me a designated 2.4 signal for legacy devices. But it does seem like a crime that we can't segregate the two signals like we did before MESH.

I have Google Mesh and lights that are "Hub Space" 4 out of 10 connected and they are all in the same large room. I have deleted and added the 6 a few times and they show up in the app but I am supposed to be within Bluetooth range when connecting to Wi-Fi. I will go home and try this method but I don't know about the Bluetooth aspect.

My Arlo cameras have been working for years on 5G and they got disconnected, had to factory reset home base, and now were insisting for the cameras to connect to 2.4GHz. My router has only5G...I walked down the street and boom back online. Thanks!!
Did you have to stay in the alley until the set up was complete, or once it started, could you return to the house and it would stay in 2.4 while the set up was in process?
This was INCREDIBLY helpful!!! After you explained the concept of creating a physical environment to cause the 2.4 GHZ to kick in, I tried a twist on this and staying in the house, went to the furnace/HVAC room in the basement level (Google NEST WIFI router on top level [3rd level], closed the door to the furnace/HVAC soom and sure enough I watched the frequency switch on my phone from 5 GHZ to 2.4 GHZ!!! My question is as follows. I want to connect smart light bulbs, so I can change their on/off schedule while away from the house. Once they are connected on the 2.4 GHZ frequency, will I be able to use the Smart Life App to change their on/off times through whatever internet connection I get while away from the house? Also, once they are connected through the 2.GHZ, would they ever attempt to flip back to the 5 GHZ frequency, thereby not working, since they are placed in a location where the 5GHZ frequency is the active frequency?
I was wondering if I was losing my mind or is this problem existed. It is great you figured out a workaround but am pissed at google for not telling us about this and fixing it. Many devices in my household are 2.4GHz still going back and forth with Google support on this poorly engineered mesh system. If I had known this before would not have invested in Google hardware by that I mean Google Wifi and Pixel 3XL cell phone. Not sure I want to walk around my neighborhood every time I need to connect my 2.4GHz Wifi signal. Great video dude.

@@TheUpshaws after watching your video and remembering how I tried to connect to my 2.4GHz INKBIRD-4T BBQ back around Christmas decided to give it another try. The confusion generator was the fact this company makes to models one is wifi and the other is Bluetooth. Many were telling me it wasn't wifi device oh well onward I pushed. Just moments ago turned on my INKBIRD device and to my surprise there it was! I changed nothing but did have a long discussion with Google and they assured me it would be something they would work out. I didn't expect this as I was getting ready to dump my Pixel 3XL and my Mesh Google Wifi hardware. Now I am fine and ready to do some testing of my other devices and BBQ some ribs. To be clear I am not sure google did anything so FYI. Also could you test and see if you can connect to your led lighting again?

After watching your video gave it another try and to my surprise the 2.4GHz BBQ thermometer showed up and I did nothing different from what I tried on Christmas day. Go figure. Yea, you set it up while you’re away from the house. If you go back to the house, it’ll reconnect to the 5ghz before you get a chance to set things up.
Yea, while you’re out of the house. That way your phone is only connected to the 2.4 band. If you go back to the house the mesh router will automatically connect you back to the 5ghz band.
Totally left out whether you completed the setup right where you were standing or did you walk back home and complete the setup... you needed to add this to your video.....
I have a Starlink dual band router. Tried to split frequencies, so I could set up my floodlight cameras to 2.4 ghz frequency. Can't seem to get 5ghz frequency to disconnect. Any advice on making this a bit easier ? TY
Once you walk back and connect to the 2.4ghz, will it keep you on there if you keep moving closer? Or will it move/flip you over to the 5gzh? I need to be close to the smart device to pair it.
WOW! THAT SIMPLE?!?!?! I have an orbi router mesh internet + satellite in my house. To my surprise, Netgear hasn't offer a work-around yet and from the lack of response recently, don't have one either. I've been working with TWO vendors on this problem, (one OEM makes a garage door position indicator & the other make a Pet monitor/Treat dispenser unit), and they offer no help/suggestions. I am gonna try the "" procedure . . . I'll let you know the outcome. . . Wish me luck!

Set it up while out in the street. Once it’s set up you can come back in. Your phone will connect back to the 5 but the camera will stay connected to the 2.4.
I have a baby monitor that is not connecting probably because of my wifi not being on 2.4 GHz. Let's say I follow this method and it works then what happens next time I go out and come back in? Is this just for first time setup?
Yes just the first time. It should automatically reconnect on it’s own if the power goes out/batteries die/ etc. but you shouldn’t have to do this workaround after the first time.
I’ve also had mixed success with putting a foil baking pan over the wired mesh point, and unplugging the others. Had to change my change my SSID because it was too long for a new smart lock. So I’m back here looking for other tricks…
I am trying to set up a "smart" garage door opener using the myQ app. During the setup process, I have to press the "learn" button on the garage door opener motor and then join that "local network" (via bluetooth I think?) that it creates in order to proceed. I'm concerned that if I walk far enough away from my house for my phone to switch to the 2.4 GHz band of my Google mesh network Wifi that the phone may not remain connected to the opener via it's network or bluetooth connection in order to be able to get the opener to join the 2.4GHz band. Thoughts? Thank you!
Here for this very reason. The walk-down-the-street method didn't work. I even checked my iPhone via the google home wifi devices to confirm I was on 2.4. Did you ever find a solution?
What if you have a power outage or need to reset the router. Will the light strips have a hard time reconnecting to the 2.4ghz? After its stuck to the wall would you have to take it off to walk far away from the house again?
Ours connected automatically after power outages. It might be a good idea to test it out after you connect it before you mount it. But it should reconnect automatically.
Yes, but only until the device is connected to the internet. Usually when you’re going through the setup process it will tell you once the device is connected. At that point you can go back inside.
Will this same premise work when using an iPad as a homehub for Homekit? I'm thinking the iPad will revert to the 5g network after some time, meaning my homekit devices will not work remotely

It’ll automatically connect to the 5ghz as soon as you’re close enough. So when you’re walking back, once you get you connection again, stop walking and connect the smart device. The 2.4 can reach farther so once you’re far enough away to disconnect and you walk back just until it connects again, that will be the 2.4. If you keep walking back while you connect the device, you run the risk of your phone reconnecting to the 5 and you’ll have to start over.
I’m having issues connecting my smart garage to the WiFi be use of the 2.4 mhz issue! I also have a satellite, so my question is do I unplug the satellite before trying this solution?
I have faced the same problem when I tried to connect smart devices because they only connected with 2.4 ghz but I did something different. There is an option on the mesh devices that’s allowing you to creat a guest network and you can choose either to be working with both channels or only with one channel. So I did put my guest network working only on 2.4 channel which allowed me to connect my smart devices.
So ,if you have 10 lights to connect up, do you have to do this ,for every single light ? Do you need the light to be flashing in pairing mode ? Do you need to pair outside or come in the house. To pair ??. Or are we saying that , The phone will now stay in 2,4 ghz, once back in the house ?? and can then connect all lights. Not so clear still.

OMG I had been looking for an answer to this for the longest end of giving up on some of my smart devices and used what worked, but I got the ring doorbell what made me get a mesh needed more strength, but do you know a work around for that my smart plugs? I am having a time getting them to connect or anyone else??? I have a TP mesh hooked up & need a work around to hook up to the 2.4 ghz?
Tried this approach several times in the freezing cold walks in and out of the house in the GTA and couldn't get it going :( . I see it works for many which is great :) . So I now get 'peeved' and call Service provider wanting to go back to Legacy and away from MESH. Super, Super helpful guy says...lets see how we can do a go around. He/we tried a few things like disconnecting the eero (dedicated WiFi ?) but that and other things didn't work. THE ANSWER - add a separate dedicated 2.4G. I see both the 5g (without the 5g attached which is the combination of the 2.4 and 5 as mentioned) but the creation of a mdm2.4 Got Me Connected!!! Thanks for the help Mr. Upshaw - I know I would eventually get there also, but the freezing weather and frustration almost gave me another potential stroke :)

It should work for you. The settings you set for the smart device should save and be separate from your phone settings.

You still set it up while you’re far away from your house. As you walk closer, your phone will reconnect to the 5 signal so you have to stay far away.
Worked Great, I shut off my satellite so I did not have to go as far I then hooked up the Feit outdoor light controllers. Thank you.

Great process. I didn't get to test it (yet) but was lucky enough to have an extender that runs at 2.4 and linked it to my Mesh, giving me a designated 2.4 signal for legacy devices. But it does seem like a crime that we can't segregate the two signals like we did before MESH.

Have meshed internet and a couple extenders that I’ve known at least one factor to be the problem...I’ve been trialing and erring to find a workaround to no avail for over a year. FINALLY I now have something that works!!! I’m way too fastidious to have a bulb suddenly disconnect and then randomly refuse to reconnect to not drive me bonkers lol. I have Google Mesh and lights that are "Hub Space" 4 out of 10 connected and they are all in the same large room. I have deleted and added the 6 a few times and they show up in the app but I am supposed to be within Bluetooth range when connecting to Wi-Fi. I will go home and try this method but I don't know about the Bluetooth aspect.
Trying to get my new TV to recognize my Google Nodes that are 5 ghz. An electrician couldn't figure this out! I'll try it your way and see. Your mother in law is lucky!

My Arlo cameras have been working for years on 5G and they got disconnected, had to factory reset home base, and now were insisting for the cameras to connect to 2.4GHz. My router has only5G...I walked down the street and boom back online. Thanks!!
Did you have to stay in the alley until the set up was complete, or once it started, could you return to the house and it would stay in 2.4 while the set up was in process?

This was INCREDIBLY helpful!!! After you explained the concept of creating a physical environment to cause the 2.4 GHZ to kick in, I tried a twist on this and staying in the house, went to the furnace/HVAC room in the basement level (Google NEST WIFI router on top level [3rd level], closed the door to the furnace/HVAC soom and sure enough I watched the frequency switch on my phone from 5 GHZ to 2.4 GHZ!!!
My question is as follows. I want to connect smart light bulbs, so I can change their on/off schedule while away from the house. Once they are connected on the 2.4 GHZ frequency, will I be able to use the Smart Life App to change their on/off times through whatever internet connection I get while away from the house? Also, once they are connected through the 2.GHZ, would they ever attempt to flip back to the 5 GHZ frequency, thereby not working, since they are placed in a location where the 5GHZ frequency is the active frequency?
Or you could have created a guest network and skipped all these other steps

I was wondering if I was losing my mind or is this problem existed. It is great you figured out a workaround but am pissed at google for not telling us about this and fixing it. Many devices in my household are 2.4GHz still going back and forth with Google support on this poorly engineered mesh system. If I had known this before would not have invested in Google hardware by that I mean Google Wifi and Pixel 3XL cell phone. Not sure I want to walk around my neighborhood every time I need to connect my 2.4GHz Wifi signal. Great video dude.
I completely understand. My wife unplugged the lights the other day and I haven’t reconnected them yet because I haven’t wanted to go through the work.
@@TheUpshaws after watching your video and remembering how I tried to connect to my 2.4GHz INKBIRD-4T BBQ back around Christmas decided to give it another try. The confusion generator was the fact this company makes to models one is wifi and the other is Bluetooth. Many were telling me it wasn't wifi device oh well onward I pushed. Just moments ago turned on my INKBIRD device and to my surprise there it was! I changed nothing but did have a long discussion with Google and they assured me it would be something they would work out. I didn't expect this as I was getting ready to dump my Pixel 3XL and my Mesh Google Wifi hardware. Now I am fine and ready to do some testing of my other devices and BBQ some ribs. To be clear I am not sure google did anything so FYI. Also could you test and see if you can connect to your led lighting again?

After watching your video gave it another try and to my surprise the 2.4GHz BBQ thermometer showed up and I did nothing different from what I tried on Christmas day. Go figure. Maybe you can test your LED lights again and see if you see them.

Yea, you set it up while you’re away from the house. If you go back to the house, it’ll reconnect to the 5ghz before you get a chance to set things up.

Yea, while you’re out of the house. That way your phone is only connected to the 2.4 band. If you go back to the house the mesh router will automatically connect you back to the 5ghz band.

I have a Starlink dual band router. Tried to split frequencies, so I could set up my floodlight cameras to 2.4 ghz frequency. Can't seem to get 5ghz frequency to disconnect. Any advice on making this a bit easier ? TY

WOW! THAT SIMPLE?!?!?! I have an orbi router mesh internet + satellite in my house. To my surprise, Netgear hasn't offer a work-around yet and from the lack of response recently, don't have one either.
I've been working with TWO vendors on this problem, (one OEM makes a garage door position indicator & the other make a Pet monitor/Treat dispenser unit), and they offer no help/suggestions. I am gonna try the "" procedure . . . I'll let you know the outcome. . . Wish me luck!

So I’ve turned around and should be o 2.4, question is do I set up camera out in street or go back to house ? So will I switch back to 5 at house and won’t be able connect camera ?
Set it up while out in the street. Once it’s set up you can come back in. Your phone will connect back to the 5 but the camera will stay connected to the 2.4.
I have a baby monitor that is not connecting probably because of my wifi not being on 2.4 GHz. Let's say I follow this method and it works then what happens next time I go out and come back in? Is this just for first time setup?
Yes just the first time. It should automatically reconnect on it’s own if the power goes out/batteries die/ etc. but you shouldn’t have to do this workaround after the first time.

I’ve also had mixed success with putting a foil baking pan over the wired mesh point, and unplugging the others. Had to change my change my SSID because it was too long for a new smart lock. So I’m back here looking for other tricks…

I am trying to set up a "smart" garage door opener using the myQ app. During the setup process, I have to press the "learn" button on the garage door opener motor and then join that "local network" (via bluetooth I think?) that it creates in order to proceed. I'm concerned that if I walk far enough away from my house for my phone to switch to the 2.4 GHz band of my Google mesh network Wifi that the phone may not remain connected to the opener via it's network or bluetooth connection in order to be able to get the opener to join the 2.4GHz band. Thoughts? Thank you!
This one is a little complicated. I didn’t have an issue connecting my MyQ garage door opener to my mesh network though. Are you still having issues?
Here for this very reason. The walk-down-the-street method didn't work. I even checked my iPhone via the google home wifi devices to confirm I was on 2.4. Did you ever find a solution?

What if you have a power outage or need to reset the router. Will the light strips have a hard time reconnecting to the 2.4ghz? After its stuck to the wall would you have to take it off to walk far away from the house again?
Ours connected automatically after power outages. It might be a good idea to test it out after you connect it before you mount it. But it should reconnect automatically.

Yes, but only until the device is connected to the internet. Usually when you’re going through the setup process it will tell you once the device is connected. At that point you can go back inside.

So when you are far enough away to only connect to the 2 ghz, will the bluetooth/wifi on the device you are trying to connect still reach your phone?
Will this same premise work when using an iPad as a homehub for Homekit? I'm thinking the iPad will revert to the 5g network after some time, meaning my homekit devices will not work remotely

Leave the device you want to connect in the house. Just take your phone out when you go for the walk.
If it changes to 2.4 on the wallk back how long does its stay connected to 2.4? It doesn’t automatically reconnect to 5ghz.
It’ll automatically connect to the 5ghz as soon as you’re close enough. So when you’re walking back, once you get you connection again, stop walking and connect the smart device. The 2.4 can reach farther so once you’re far enough away to disconnect and you walk back just until it connects again, that will be the 2.4. If you keep walking back while you connect the device, you run the risk of your phone reconnecting to the 5 and you’ll have to start over.
You can also add a guest network that uses 2.4 by default.

I’m having issues connecting my smart garage to the WiFi be use of the 2.4 mhz issue! I also have a satellite, so my question is do I unplug the satellite before trying this solution?
I have faced the same problem when I tried to connect smart devices because they only connected with 2.4 ghz but I did something different. There is an option on the mesh devices that’s allowing you to creat a guest network and you can choose either to be working with both channels or only with one channel. So I did put my guest network working only on 2.4 channel which allowed me to connect my smart devices.
I tried that but no option for 2.4 ghz, what did I do wrong?

So ,if you have 10 lights to connect up, do you have to do this ,for every single light ? Do you need the light to be flashing in pairing mode ? Do you need to pair outside or come in the house. To pair ??. Or are we saying that , The phone will now stay in 2,4 ghz, once back in the house ?? and can then connect all lights. Not so clear still.
No you’ll need to stay out there to connect each one. As you get closer to the house, your phone will switch back to the 5 band.

I would just like to say a massive thank you this stopped me messing around with my Wi-fi which I was not sure about and I p probably was going to return the item as it just seems like it was never going to work and it was too much hassle to set up after watching your video it was great followed the steps walked outside managed to get a weak signal tried to program them work straight off thank you very much really appreciate the video.

OMG I had been looking for an answer to this for the longest end of giving up on some of my smart devices and used what worked, but I got the ring doorbell what made me get a mesh needed more strength, but do you know a work around for that my smart plugs? I am having a time getting them to connect or anyone else??? I have a TP mesh hooked up & need a work around to hook up to the 2.4 ghz?
It should work the same for the smart plugs as it does for the lights. It may look a little different but overall it should be the same process.

Tried this approach several times in the freezing cold walks in and out of the house in the GTA and couldn't get it going :( . I see it works for many which is great :) . So I now get 'peeved' and call Service provider wanting to go back to Legacy and away from MESH. Super, Super helpful guy says...lets see how we can do a go around. He/we tried a few things like disconnecting the eero (dedicated WiFi ?) but that and other things didn't work. THE ANSWER - add a separate dedicated 2.4G. I see both the 5g (without the 5g attached which is the combination of the 2.4 and 5 as mentioned) but the creation of a mdm2.4 Got Me Connected!!!
