This was also my first mid-level kit . It was exactly the same except that the 22” kick drum had a center post for the rack toms. Only the 16” floor tom was meant to hang from a cymbal stand. I later added legs to it. I sold the kit about a year ago because I wanted to downsize to a 20” bass drum as my band plays a lot of gigs and the 22” was hurting my back. I switched to a Sonor AQ2 Studio kit in Titanium Quartz color - I had always wanted a silver sparkle kit, and they sound beautiful. You did a great job with this kit ! White Swirl (is that the name ?) is a beautiful wrap !
Man, I can't believe how almost exact the Starclassic is to my Superstar kit. Love the Starcast mounts, and even though that rollerball design (whatever it's called) moves a lot, you can't beat the sustain you get from the system as a whole. TAMA drums have great tone, and an excellent tuning range as well!
I am getting this exact set up with the 5”.5”-14” matching snare but in dark cherry fade this Tuesday. I can’t wait to put them through the paces! Nice kit man, pretty color!
I did the same thing with my MIJ Starclassic Performer last year, updated the StarCast mounts to latest version. Makes a massive difference, the toms look stunning! 100% Birch sounds amazing, rich tonality and much better than people would think !! Your kit sounds and looks gorgeous!
Great video ! So much love and passion for the kit , and it is truly beautiful . Great sound , great player . That kit ended up in the right hands . Much enjoyed this !
I didn't what I would consider my first pro level kit until 42. Always played quality midline stuff and pro level cymbals as I didn't figure it made sense to buy an expensive kit to take into clubs and bars. A year back a bought a beautiful gms grand master but I still won't take it out to gigs 😂
I have the same kit, love it! unfortunately my one the color is not white anymore but kind of yellow, I believe sunburn. I’m trying to find a solution to bring the original color back.
Just got a Tama Starclassic Performer Walnut Birch and I couldn’t be happier. I love birch, but the low end from the walnut on the floor tom is insane! You made a great choice.
Love your restoration and I truly love the Starclassic Performer too. I just repurchased again as well. Sold 2 Starclassics and repurchased duplicates later. Never letting another Starclassic go again. Great idea on replacing the black starcast with the newer chrome. Looks fantastic! :)
Can't believe I haven't seen this video yet. This is awesome dude. I have a Starclassic BB in blue marine pearl (the last gen before the new WB's) and I absolutely love em. I've coveted me some Starclassics for about 10 years now, but I never wanted to buy one of those older ones, ONLY because of those fugly black painted tom mounts. I really kinda hated those, but you've totally solved the problem!. What a great idea with the new chrome mounts!. It's cool the mounting holes are the same, what a great deal!. I totally vibe with the overall aesthetic with the marine pearl white and the chrome everywhere, including the dope-ass chrome reso kick drum head. Very cool, very classy. Even dig the mic setup with the Audix and the B-52. You got yourself a super solid set up there my friend, and you did em right... congrats! 💀🔥
I keep drooling over new drums whenever they come on advertisements... But when then i see my Amber (2002-ish Starclassics performer), I forgot others... too much memory, just too much to part ways. Now my kid is playing them... under my watch, hahahaha Good find man, dont loose it again!
Haha, the Genius Mouse Pad, that brings back memories! :-) I found that every drum I get, the mounting screws of the hardware often have loosened up (or were not all properly screwed in at the factory), so I usually go over those too. Did you inspect the bearing edges? A kit that's seen its share of use over the years may have some damages there as well. I may put some bees wax on it. The kit looks great! I used the star tom mount on my Mapex kit. Just that locking connector. I had to modify an aftermarket hoop mount thing, but nothing too difficult (basically a bigger hole and some extra bolts & washers).
Ah ha good spot! Yeah, that's true - it's a good idea to tighten up everything. The bearing edges were just fine... it appears this kit was relatively well looked after! Glad you dig the build... I LOVE it!
Tama hardware is great. I love their stands, that tom mount system is awesome, and the newer snares all have their hoop and lug system where you don't need to take out the rods, just unscrew and fold back. And of course their cymbal wingnut replacements, pretty affordable stuff and I see them used more and more.
Great video, I enjoyed it, I’m looking at buying a 1999 Tama Starclassic performer birch transparent green from a friend , for my studio,it’s a good price I’m a guitarist ,but I’m an ok drummer, and I’m just feeling the mojo of drums calling me these days, and these Tama Performers seem to be liked by everyone,I think you’ve convinced to grab them , take care from Boston Ma. 😉
I have the same set and was thinking of updating the hardware, what's the name of the tama hardware upgrade piece that I can get for it that you have in the video?
I just got a superstar classic 2019 BLB and it has those old mounts but in silver. Too bulky. Miss pdp x7 but I’ll upgrade to those. Where can I buy them!?
Beautiful drum kit! On this new one were you able to get rid of the yellowish sun burn or you did not have to? If so, how did you do that? Also, is that birch or maple?
I just bought the efx in liquid metal- The guy was selling it for his cousin who died and he had no idea about drums so we actually advertise them as the new star classic birch walnut- so I drove a many hours to get my hands on this set because I loved it in the music store - only to arrive and I knew it wasn’t but I liked the sound so I bought it. It has Evans G2/G1- and eq 4 batter on kick. It’s odd that it has Chrome mounting- not as shown in catalog www.tama.com/usa/support/catalogs/20000101000000.html The guy advertised it at 1100.00 (us) 4 piece only but gave it to me for 975.00. I didn’t realize what it was until I did research- I feel like I was screwed. But as a novice I cannot tell what I’m missing as far as sound. I don’t know how old the heads are - they don’t look bad but since I’ve been playing they have a lot of gluelike shit all over them😂- i’ve been a guitar player my whole life and just played a lot of air drums, so I’m definitely picking up on it and having a total blast especially playing zeppelin and Rush, but I need to select the best heads or sell the kit and get the one I wanted - you know the birch walnut mix. I need advice!
Hi there! Rest assured, I don't think you were screwed - you've acquired a beautiful set of drums and you can always restore them as shown in this video. New heads will be a HUGE change in sound (for the better). Try Evans EC2 clear heads on the tom batters. The birch/walnut mix vs your all-birch kit will sound incredible close to one another.
Louis Sellers thanks! I feel better about my purchase! I seriously appreciate your guidance! I’m assuming you recommend clear on ec2 batters? Should I leave the resos g1? Bass batter? It’s got eq4 on it and sounds pretty good- not worn at all. I bought a used tama snare steel works st 13x6.5. What batter and snare side do you recommend? I really love mick Fleetwood’s sound! and style. Never knew how cool he was until I started studying drumming. I love how he incorporates his toms, melodically. However, I’m probably one of the biggest Rush fanatics you’ll ever meet, so spending a lot of time studying Pearts approach, style, feel etc. I really enjoyed the tama slp black brass 14x6.5 - I wonder if I replace the heads on the steelworks if I can achieve that warm resonance and put the 5 + bills towards my sabians I want AAX freq. I hate being ignorant with this - music stores are a mess still from COVID so selection for trying shit out is not happening these days! I require optimal sound to attain optimal enjoyment 😂 I will make my decision this weekend! Lol! I got some great advice from another drummer who also recommended the ec2 on the birch. Thanks soooooooo much!!! ❤️😊😎
Ha, same thing happened to my drums leaving them in the car and the sun damaged the finish. I need to restore my old starclassic performers with a new wrap.
Davis Blanchard The DW kit was sold about two years ago because I now endorse Tama. Naturally, I’d recommend Tama to anyone looking to buy a kit but, if you tell me your budget, I can offer more insight!
A gradual process of making the right contacts here in the UK / Europe and putting out content they enjoy enough to put their name behind me as a player. I've also been fortunate enough to visit the Vault in NB, Canada. It's a slow process but hopefully you'll gain their attention if you offer them something valuable.
If anyone reading this has the 16” (legged) floor Tom to match this kit and finish.. please reply to my comment. I’ll make you an offer:) we’ll exchange info elsewhere.
I hope you enjoy the restoration video - if you've ever done this kind of thing before, be sure to leave a comment below!

Nice kit. The white silk wrap looks exactly like the wrap Mapex uses for the Saturn V Tour in the white marine finish.
Amazing - thank you, mate!
hello Louis , Tama brother, very good job! personally i upgrade my rockstar custom kit wtih diecast hoops! beautiful look and sound!
How do the rockstars sound now?
Just got my late 90’s Tama racing green starclassic kit!! It sounds amazing
@@jeremybrooks2332 very nice!!
Brilliant! Tama Starclassic performer is my favorite kit, yours looks and sounds amazing. Congrats on the kit and thanks for sharing this!

So you put all that effort putting together the kick drum only to stuff a queen-sized bed in there?
What’s wrong with that?

Glad you think so! This one was clean - I'm not sure how you'd remove the sunburnt look. This is a birch kit.
@@louistotalcontrol great job! I think the clear ec2 works so well with those shells!

Agreed!
Hi, if you don´t care for you player points on evans and pro mark packaging, can you pass it to me? :) thank you

That bell brass stole the show

Impressed with your attention to detail - I realised after shooting this vid!
You have that bass drum too muffled
I just prefer a quick, punchy rock sound
