"There's a hole in the world like a great black pit, and it's filled with people who are filled with shit, and the vermin of the world inhabit it.... But not for long"
I like how Anthony just sees such a different London than even the audience sees. Any person should look at that scene and see how creepy and miserable London is in this period, not even considering Todd.
From an outsider’s perspective (or in Anthony’s case a Sailor who had been away from home since childhood) London would be a welcome and beautiful sight. It only takes a moment from an Experienced Sweeney Todd to turn this mysterious and beautiful sight into a suffocating Hell. Not disagreeing, just expanding on what you said🤔
Many 18th-century towns were grimy, overcrowded and generally insanitary places. London in particular suffered badly from dirt and pollution, so much so that candles were sometimes required at midday in busy shops owing to the smoggy conditions outside. Rapid growth has it downside. Also infrastructure at that time didn't support that kind of growth, so human and pack horses waste alike clogged the street.
I love the contrast when they say there’s no place like London. Anthony believes that London is so wonderful, nothing can compare, and Sweeney thinks that London is so horrible, nothing can compare in that regard.
They also talk about the world differently. For Anthony, it's full of wonder, and while Todd agrees, it's overshadowed by why he's sailing the world in the first place, being ripped apart from everyrhing that he loved
I still can’t believe that this was Johnny Depps first singing movie role! He did SO GOOD!!! I was astonished by his performance as well as his vocal performance!!!
I personally would've picked Johnny Depp to win the Oscar the year he was nominated for this film. It would've been a close call for me though. Depp was excellent. Daniel Day-Lewis was great in There Will Be Blood as well, but in away, this was a departure from what people usually think of when talking about Johnny Depp performances. Daniel Day-Lewis' performance in TWBB seemed to me at least to be an extension of that of his performance in Gangs of New York. It's not bad, but it wasn't necessarily something we hadn't seen before. Both are great actors, but while it would be a close call, I would've voted for Depp. That's just me though.
I personally disagree. For me, whenever I see Depp in a movie, that's all I see: Johnny Depp acting. He's an amazing actor, but he doesn't quite sell the roles he plays like he used to. Daniel Day-Lewis completely loses himself in the role, and it's hard to see him under all that acting. But, opinions are opinions, and I will respect yours :)
Johnny's acting in sweeney todd is absolutely amazing and Oscar worthy, Johnny also could without any doubt win the oscar for "The libertine" if that movie could get the enough attention, I can get why it didn't get noticed at all but Johnny's performance is like you have never seen before from anybody .
