I NEVER Expected It To START So Well! The $1 BMW X5 Runs AGAIN

  • Finally! The $1 BMW X5 is going back together. We got most of the cooling system wrapped up 2 nights ago, now I just need to install the rest of it, fill it with coolant, and put the rest of the engine bay back together. It was pretty warm in KS today so I could feel my fingers which translates to real progress for once! Plus I drive the X5 for the first time in a month, and get the dirt out from under it.
    Winner must be in the US and pick up the car.

    Having pulled old telephone wire bundles back in the day in old office building floors, the only hope you have is to try to flood the pipe with soapy or slipperly liquid. They used to use different types of slime to make the wire pulling easier, but over time the slime turns into more of a hardened glue. Even if that's not the case, one little twist or turn in the run can make the wire pretty well stuck for good, without some sort of friction reliever.

    When you were working on the BMW there was a mark on the wall behind you which I kept thinking was a hair on my phone screen and was continuously trying to swipe it away 🙄😂. Those cables may come out one at a time as the friction inside the conduit will overcome the tensile strength of the copper and its sheath, probably sufficient dust and debris has entered the conduit to add to the existing friction also 👍🏻

    Also, to avoid running out of coolant when using that filler, just dump the bottles into a clean 5 gallon bucket. When you are done, just dump the leftover back into the bottles.

    • @ImTheJoker4u
      @ImTheJoker4u 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Spot on. I actually have a dedicated bucket (and large drain pan) at the shop for exactly this purpose. Anytime i drain coolant it goes in the bucket, and right back in the car (if applicable) when I'm done with the job.
      Pro tip:
      When pouring out a jug of coolant, poke a hole in the bottom while pouring. It pours faster, and won't gurgle and splash all over😉
      Pro tip #2:
      When pouring oil, hold the container so that the opening is on top. It pours faster, and won't gurgle and splash all over😉

    Cut the slab just below the panel and cut through the wires so there is no 90 degree turn in the on that end.. then break the slab around the post so you can grab the wires and pull them horizontally.. This removes all 90 degree bottle necks and should allow the wires to be pulled. Maybe even twist the end so that it makes the start of the wires into more of a "rope" so you are not pulling individual wires but one "rope" of wires...

    Those old 3.0’s are awesome. BMW’s get a bad wrap but if you buy the older ones with the inline 6 motors...they are great cars. They aren’t like Honda’s where you can neglect them forever and get 200k. You have to maintain them and how you take care of them is how they will take care of you.

    The only change in procedure I would do is to dump more than you think you need for coolant into a clean 5 gallon bucket. If you're not careful when switching the coolant bottles you can get air into the system then. It's overkill but just to avoid repeated work is always how I do things.
