    This is something I thought you guys might want to know about to make it easier. I bought the 998c after watching Jack's video. It's an excellent video because it gives you exactly how to set up the keys. Two things: first, since the cutters and tracers are not labeled, you will need to use a dial calipers to measure the outside diameters and find the matching cutter and tracer. Second, I note that there is mention of a Honda shim kit so that you can set the height of the keys quickly in the jaw clamps. I could not find the shim kit but there is an alternate method using ¼” wide feeler gauges. ¼” wide feeler gauges are hard to find but the Craftsman 40801 feeler gauge which contains the ¼” feeler gauges you will need for about $10-$12. Why 1/4"? Because ½” is too wide, and ¼” is just a little narrower than the Honda key blade so they are perfectly sized. I use the 0.030 blade to give the perfect shim height for Honda keys. If you need a little more height, combine the .017 and 0.14 blades to give you a .031 shim, etc....you get the idea.
    Extra note: Also as some of you may find, the jaws and table on the 998c may not be completely level from front to back, so when you try to scribe the key as Jack demonstrated, it is not very easy to level the key and get a consistent scratch from front to back. I was thinking of shimming the entire table but I didn’t want to go through the trouble. When you use the shim I mention, you still have the same problem. Here's the trick, use two feeler blades, say .016 and .014 and place a small piece of cardboard (use as a shim stock) between the blades. If the table slopes down toward the front, place the cardboard shim between the blades at the front of the clamp which will lift the front up a little. I got perfect levels doing this.
    I hope this helps you guys….

    • @nlum3135
      @nlum3135 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Forgot to add...I use the .014 and .016 together to shim the cutter side and the .013 and .017 to shim the tracer side.

    Great video! I have a JMA NEO, which is identical to that. It was 1,100. All key companies make manual high security key cutters. JMA, Xhorse, Silca, and a few others. Instead of automated, I like that there are fewer moving parts on manual cutters. You really earned your money on that cut! Honda security keys are difficult.

    I'm looking into buying this machine. I have blanks and i can't seem to find anyone to cut my transponder keys or cut me a door key off of a transponder key. They either want to sell me their keys or look at me like I'm a criminal. I was a mechanic and programmed 1000's of key and i got a computer to program keys and wanted to help friends and family out with this service. I just want someone to cut the dang key 😂 i think I'm just going to buy this and that will be one more service i can charge for. I wish i could find someone to cut them but after this video I'm 90% sure I'm ordering this very soon. New sub here. Loving the content

      I'm looking at these machines too for similar reasons, but before that, I considered getting the "Honest Dong Shi" key mould set. Seems like you could make the profile you need on it, then just bring it to a Wally World or Home De Pot to have it duplicated. Haven't tried it, but if they'll operate a lock, they should be good to trace as well (?).
      Why would you want to cut a door key with no transponder, tho? That _would_ seem suspect, at least to strangers.

      @@whocares4464 Yeah, I hear ya. I sell ECM "sets" on eBay with matched immobilizer and uncut "pod" key(s) with OEM-programmed transponder, so people don't have to change their locks or carry two keys. They just cut the key I send to match their existing one, and away they go. Sadly for me, I underestimated how much of that business was due to the lock cylinder rather than ECM failure, loss of keys or transponder failure.

      Ortega32 most laser cut keys can be done with the 2mm bit. That's pretty much the standard. Some bits might be for dimple keys. The 1.5mm bits are a good standard as well but take longer to cut. Make sure the tracer you use matches the bit. For instance 2mm tracer with a 2mm bit otherwise cut will be off.

      Milton Hernandez it depends on the radii in the key. You can check them with the tracer. Or check them with a radius gauge. So if the tracer or radius gauge 'indicates'/fits a 1,5 or 2 mm radius that is the cutter (or bit) you'll choose to mill the new key.

      transponder in the key has to match the code in the immobilizer. on some cars you can program with a simple sequence like putting the original in, turning to on position for X seconds, then off and put the new one in and turn to on for X seconds and it writes the code. On some cars you have to hook up a dealer level scantool to run the key programming sequence from the ECU. And on more annoying cars, like my BMW, you have to take the EWS module out from under the dash, take the circuit board out of the box and hook a plug on it from a programmer box and use your computer to write the key values to the key and the EWS module at the same time... fun stuff. in the last case, its cheaper to buy one of these key cutters, and the programmer, and do it yourself than it is to take it to someone and get key copies made... which is why im here watching this video. haha.

      Blair Middleton you need to shim the keys up. I went on Amazon and bought two 1/4 feeler gauges for $11. I put shims under the original key until the deepest part of the key sits flush with the clamp. Match the same amount of shims from the second feeler gauge set and put them under the new key. It's a little difficult to understand without seeing it so I try to post a video explaining it asap.

    • @michaellapierre1244
      @michaellapierre1244 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably figured this out by now.... The cutting tool is an end mill. It can cut sideways unlike a drill. As the end mill rotates each flute (or tooth) should shave off only a very small chip. The chip is really just a very, very thin sliver of the metal. The thickness of the chip should be about 1/4 the thickness of an ordinary piece of paper. That's about .001 inch thick or less, no more! Try to gently blow the chips away as they are being cut. You don't want to recut chips over and over again. A slow, steady pace is the best. If the bit tends to pull itself into the work, look up climb milling vs conventional milling.

You can set the depth if you buy the honda mounting shim kit that actually holds the key above the clamp but that's not made by them and it's $143. If you have ever made a honda key on this low budget machine you would know exactly what i mean. Try dropping the keys in the machine next time. Set your depth and let me know how it works out. I made probably a couple hundred honda keys on this machine this way before i bought my keyline ninja laser and they all worked except the first few i dropped in and "set the depth". It doesnt work like that for this particular key. Lol

    • @michaellapierre1244
      @michaellapierre1244 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use the largest diameter cutting tool that will fit into the smallest radius on the key you are copying. Use the tracing tool bit to see if it will do the job. For example, if you are trying to cut a Honda Fit key with a 3mm diameter cutting tool. Try to trace out the cuts on the original key using the 3mm diameter tracing tool as if it were the cutting tool. If the tracing tool reaches into all the small radii on the original, then the cutting tool will do it as well. The tracing tool and cutting tool should always be the same diameter when cutting. If the tool cannot get all the way into the corners then use a smaller diameter tool. You want to use the largest diameter tool that you can because it will chatter less. Chatter ruins the finish and breaks the cutting tool. These cutters are just end mills used by machinist every day. A couple drops of WD-40 will help the tool last longer as well. Keep brushing or blowing the chips away as you cut. Re-cutting the same chips over and over will wear the bit faster, and decrease the quality of the surface finish. The goal is to push the key into the end mill such that each flute on the cutter shaves off about .0005 inch on each revolution that is spins. .0005 inch is like 1/8 the thickness of a piece of paper. Push slower and steady rather than faster and jerky. Start from the outside and work your way in. Don't make full radial depth of cuts, especially with the thinner cutting tools. You will be more likely to break them. Expect razor sharp edges where you have cut.
