As a biology major I am glad you did this. All dinosaurs were just giant birds. They had feathers and were probably intelligent. The movies give them no justice. They were probably insanely beautiful.

@@ProntoLamatic It is true, both of the things they said, not all dinosaurs were like birds and not all of them had feathers. Not that I am saying the biology major is wrong, they just need to phrase what they said a bit better. The thing you have to understand is that dinosaurs lived for about 3 times the amount of time it has been since they disappeared, and so they were very bio-diverse. Humans and whales are more closely related than something like tyrannosaurus and triceratops are.

I don't really cry at sad movies, stories or books despite being an emotional person... And yet this brought me to tears. At how much information has been lost, how many species there are to mourn as completely dead, at how amazing life is, and how important it is to preserve. Amazing video- I never had much of an interest in dinosaurs before now!

Love how he describes the human body: it’s mainly squishy, gooey, soft stuff which does not preserve well.
Hes very right, which is why we're constantly changing our view of past species. Just a little bit of difference can completely change things like how scaly skin samples were all we had but then we discovered traces of feathers on dinosaurs.
The human body actually does preserve very well, actually. Granted it be alive of course.

Imagining dinosaurs with bright colours and unique pallets is far far more interesting and heartwarming than the usual drab colours
It would also be quite inaccurate for the large carnivores, for which bright colors would impare its ability to hunt prey.
@@Why79-dx4rf I meant in a creative sense. Realistically yes, they would almost definitely not have these vibrant colours. But in illustrations or artworks, I think it makes them more fun to look at. Like in this video for example!

Well, some would have been feathered. But large dinosaurs like your namesake, would’ve not had feathers. Supported by the lack of feathers is skin fossils of tyrannosaur, and the fact that feathers are a negative trait in any large animal.

Paleontologist here, since I was a child I have always been fascinated by dinosaurs, all the books I read, toys I bought, documentaries I watched, etc. EVERYTHING was related to dinosaurs. It seemed incredible to me that millions of years ago such creatures existed. Since that age I knew that my passion was paleontology, I never was a model student, I spent 2 years in a career that I did not like because I could not enter the biology degree, I repeated the university entrance exam and after 7 years since after finishing school, I was able to graduate as a biologist and ended up being a paleontologist. From the books I read as a child with lanky dinosaurs looking like giant lizards until I first collaborated in the excavation of a dinosaur many years have passed, I try my best every day trying to find out how these magnificent creatures looked like. Great video as always, greetings!

It’s weird to think that there could have been different fruits and food that existed when dinosaurs did. We will never know how they taste or what they were
The animators went above and beyond for this video. They animated living animals, extinct animals (that we can only make educated guesses as to what they looked like), and animals that we can literally only imagine. All done beautifully. This video should get an award for its animation.

You're joking, but the coloration is entirely artistic license to make a nice looking video. Think about it; why would either predator or prey develop coloration that works against them being able to survive and breed longer? Birds that are extremely colorful usually live in environments that suit their coloration and have an advantage of being able to quickly flee by flying away. Exotic bird coloration also is usually more prominent in males, where the range of genetic variation is greater in almost all species. That coloration is also frequently used as distraction away from females that have eggs or hatchlings just as much as in mating rituals. Most mammals, reptiles, insects, and slower birds are earth or plant toned or at least suited to their environment/role in the food chain.
Even the idea that dinosaurs had feathers is based on the presumption that the marks of soft tissue are the same as modern birds; they could just as easily have been quills like in a porcupine or some chitinous formations like in insects or keratin like hair and nails in mammals. Taking this video to its own conclusions of randomly adding more soft tissue because animals have it now would lead to thinking an animal like a tiger had huge wing flaps like flying squirrels and that they glided down from trees to get prey. They use an example of of making a sea lion look like a four legged land animal, but it can just as easily go the other direction.
@Horamberg I'd say they mostly died out due to a big cataclysm and reduced in size thanks to ever lowering oxygen levels in the atmosphere. We have reptiles and birds as the survivors, though.
@Horamberg no, i didn't say evolution only produces better results. It's a result of environmental pressure. It's far more likely mass extinctions occurred because of cyclical imbalance in carbon levels causing plant explosions which put so much oxygen in the air fires last longer and burn wider. Volcanic activity was higher then and until humans started deforesting wide swaths of land, most forests were on fire yearly.
You should learn to use the correct form of they are before trying to drop knowledge.

This video basically nailed the reason I went into Zoology instead of Paleontology despite my passion for both. There's just such a diversity of life around today that it feels tragic to ignore that in favour of yearning for a past we'll never fully understand.

The reason I went into Palaeontology instead of Zoology is because studying extinct animals makes you truly cherish the diversity of life today, because you study exactly how life evolved over time.

2nd: Carboniferous Devonian
Between 380 and 360 million years ago, the Devonian extinction, which includes several phases of extinction, eliminated 19% of families and 35 to 50% of genera of marine animals11 and an estimate of 75% at the species level 14. Repeated and significant variations in sea level and climate, as well as the appearance of significant vegetation cover on the continents, could be the cause of ocean anoxia and major biological crises. The causes of these changes are still debated.
3rd:Permian-Triassic
Between 252 and 245 Ma ago, the Permian-Triassic extinction was the most massive. Almost 95% of marine life disappears as well as 70% of land species (plants, animals). This extinction was preceded by two smaller events, the extinction of Olson (−273 Ma) and that of the Capitanian (in) (−260 Ma)
4: Jurassic Triassic
201 Ma ago, the Triassic-Jurassic extinction marked the disappearance of 75% of marine species, and 35% of animal families, including most of the diapsids and the last of the large amphibians.
5th: Cretaceous Paleocene
66 Ma ago, the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction killed 50% of species, including non-avian dinosaurs.
We are not living through a mass extinction nor the "biggest"
"In 2007, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature estimated that one in eight bird species, one in four mammals and one in three amphibians"
It does 20% we are far faaaaar away from the 80%(or even 50), so don't worry we are not living through the "biggest mass extinction event".
I'm not denying a lot of species are dying out there that shouldn't tho and it is a problem.
Another point to make is dinosaurs seemingly have to be “cool” and “badass”. People for some reason seem to shrug these prehistoric creatures off if they are portrayed to be feathered, colorful, and realistic. Just like a lot of modern animals don’t appear that intimidating, the same thing can be applied to dinosaurs.
There are a couple of animated videos on TH-cam that show this.
People always say animals aren’t intimidating until they actually see one, it doesn’t matter how fluffy and colourful they are, once one starts chasing you down that’s when they are actually scary.
I reckon there’s quite the amount of modern animals that do appear intimidating though
I don't even get what about having feathers and colors make them less cool. I've never gotten the argument. For one, dinosaurs aren't fiction or made up. They really existed. So you can't just be a designer and DECIDE how they looked based on how much you like it. For two, having feathers doesn't make them look less cool?? I think it actually makes them look COOLER. The intricate designs and interesting mechanisms you get from feathers can't be replicated by flat skin with scales. Have you seen birds of paradise? If they were the size of a t-rex and frilled their feathers, you'd be WAY more scared of them than any rex.

As someone who was obsessed with dinosaurs as a child, watching this video feels a little bit like coming full-circle. Huge props to C.M. Kosemen for his "skinwrapping" illustrations of living animals given the same treatment we used on depictions of dinosaurs. He is seldom mentioned as one of the most important paleoartists of our time.

I call it a win , people tend to fantasize about a lot of things and have misconceptions about different situation , I'll put it this way imagine a dog as large as you are that's faster has bigger teeth , can out climb you outrun you and outswim and is impossible to domesticate and that's not even 25% of how dangerous it would be with dinosaurs alive today , there would be nowhere you could run or hide ,and each time you sleep could possibly be the last time , even going outside for food would mean death because of "death from above"(I'll let you guess what I'm talking about)

This got me weirdly emotional, when I was a kid I was a massive fan of dinosaurs and even wanted to be an archeologist at some point, I was incredibly interested in dinosaurs and when I discovered that what I knew about dinosaurs was almost entirely wrong (for example, the fact that they're more like birds than lizards) sparked my curiosity again when I got older, and this video made me feel like a kid again, imagining how amazing dinosaurs must've been and seeing them first hand is a thought that makes me really happy and nostalgic, amazing video as always.
Archeologists don't study dinosaurs lol. Paleontologists do.

It just breaks my heart and I haven't come to terms with it for almost 20 years.
It has taken me until my late 30s. I am finding myself shocked at just how fast time seems to be going by. I used to think, “hooray, it’s Friday night but Monday morning is just around the corner”. Now it’s, “it’ll be another Friday night three weeks later in a minute”. And I know it is only going to accelerate. At some point, it’ll hit you too. Maybe sooner, maybe later. You just have to make sure you do what you can to get the things you want out of life as quickly as possible before it’s too late. Go all in and make the most of what you’re able to. Or just sit back, relax, and watch the show. Whatever is right for you.
Maybe existentialist writers will make you feel like you have someone to talk to about it?

Human history has the same story where there are still some parts of our history that end up getting forgotten and never to be learned or discovered or even have different believes and have parts be discovered and imagined differently from how it may have actually happened. Same thing applies with the many prehistoric creatures in the world. Sounds like a sad tale where there are parts of the past that will never be discovered or never learn the truth of, but it's part of history.
