The closest G4 has ever got to having a villian threatening to remove limbs off someone else was Chrysalis threatening to have Spike's wings plucked off. Can't say that too far from G1 Tirac threatening to decapitate Spike. Poor Spike having to deal with villains threatening to remove his body parts
y'know the original cartoon isn't that bad for an 80s show. Yeah the animation is limited and the voice acting really campy, but that's what it was like in the late 80s. I am surprised how badass Tirek is though.

This is why G1 is the most hardcore TV cartoon of its time. Tirek up front threatens to behead a baby dragon on more than one occasion, and is one of two villains in this show (possibly in all of the 1980s TV cartoons) to be killed off, other being Lavan. MLP had a bad reputation because of G3 but this is how it began. This is literally how My Little Pony began.
Apparently Discord and maybe Nightmare Moon in the first two episodes are the only G4 villains you've seen. At the end of Season 2 we have a creepy and menacing villain Chrysalis who tries to trick Twilight into killing Cadance. Followed immediately by King Sombra, who enslaves ponies, instills fear in them, and licks his lips as he is about to impale Spike. And is unambiguously killed off in the end. And if you want to see G4's Tirek, type in the searchbar "Twilight vs. Tirek"

I liked his designed, but he's supposed to be the pony version of Sauron, yet still, they wasted him. Chrysalis doesn't kill. Like every single villain on FiM. Sombra never showed the guts to do it either, and with Tirek is questionable, but he was a tyrant so he needed alive subjects. Chrysalis is basically Scar from The Lion King with Ursula's(The Little Mermaid) plan. Chrysalis promises food for her subjects, while she also changes shape to seduct a prince and get more power. Shameless obvious rip-off. And as I've mentioned many times, G4 Tirek is also a shameless obvious rip-off, of Arabus from G1, a cloud demon that sucked off the shadows of others with his mouth. And also, they both wear cloaks while being weak. BTW,the diamond dogs are also a rip-off,of Crunch the Rockdog from G1. I've seen all of FiM 4 times trying to find anything the least impressive. Found nothing. Tirek was a decent threat, but still almost an insult to the original.
Chrysalis doesn't kill personally, but she still intended Twilight to kill Cadance and die of starvation in the caves. They never specify what those cocoons were for, whether they are simply a prison or whether they're for eating the victim, or transforming them into a demon. Also, what happened to Princess Amore, the previous ruler of the Crystal Empire? We never see her do we, since Cadance takes the throne after killing Sombra. I think Sombra killed Amore, just like Scar killed Mufasa. I will admit however that this Tirek is creepier than G4's Tirek. Something about the voice. I think G1 Tirek was more like Nightmare Moon (in terms of eternal darkness) and King Sombra (in terms of how murderous he is, since G4 Tirek wants his victims alive). When I saw Arabus for the first time he did remind me of G4 Tirek, but G4 Tirek is more menacing than Arabus.
I love how the first MLP cartoon basically had a Satan centaur in it. Man, i would love for a MLP carton to come out today with the tone the Tirek scenes had. Good ol' 80s cartoon charm.

Still, I found him the most threatening when he was restrained and when he starts hamming everything up he loses some of the menace he had before. But all round this was guy was cool villain, especially for his era considering that well, a lot villains people remember fondly from 1980s cartoons tended to not be all that effective, or even especially threatening.
and rainbow of darkness was a thing and fans wanted the evil elements to be a thing because of that. but nooo that would be to dark to have a element war. is funny that they already shown war over 3 times in the show and say an element battle would be to much? HA! there moments that a bad guy would've won is it wasn't for plot armor. like when Chrysalis 1st showed up. she straight up won the battle and toke over. if there's no plot armor after that. than there would be no way anyone could stop her at that point. even if Tirek toke magic. Chrysalis would already have half of the world's magic to make a difference.
Honestly, thinking of a young Tirek in his prime using the rainbow of darkness to establish his power over the world and then many years later instead talking all magic he could find to established his power sounds like something that a true villain would do " use your enemies strength agaisnt them"

From what I've heard G1 actually isn't a bad generation, I haven't watched it since I was a kid so I won't judge anything, but looking at this I think those people might be correct. This video kinda makes me want to watch it, I like the G1 toys so I'm hoping I'll like the cartoon in the same way. :)
Actually the franchise was even more popular back in the 80's than it is today. It's just that there weren't any male or adult fans back then. But even so, the original MLP was so popular among little girls that all things considered the G! franchise made even more money than the current G4 franchise.

Agree.. but G4 is still written for small girls. They in fact intend to bump up target audience in G5 though it is too early to debate about quality of the show. Still they did imply that lot of that in fact did happened in G4 past and some eldritch stuff still is present in the background.

Tirek came back this season finale, and he was pants-soiling, magical nuke firing, city conquering raging badass amazing. He was clever, intimidating, ruthless and completely brutal. He wasn't an exact transcription of the g1 character, but I think he really did do the original tv special justice. He was the essence of what made Tirek an awesome villain in a tv special that otherwise lacked a lot of character in it's characters. I think g4 Tirek has more attempted murder on his character sheet then any villain so far in MLP:FIM, if you don't count Nightmare Moon's whole apocalypse thing
I agree! I loved Tirek as a kid-Mom said I drew him a lot haha! But I lost it when I saw him again in this new generation. He was so scary, but that's what made him awesome! I hope to see more G1 villains make a come back like Grogar, Crunch the Rock Dog, or The fire demon from the princess ponies episode. Heck, it would be cool if Megan, Molly, Danny, and the Witches came back too.

There are many things that bug me about G4 Tirek. I've always loved G1 Tirek, he was easily the most awesome of villains in the MLP franchise, and still is. But G4 Tirek... -He was way too generic, something that every FiM villain suffer. -They eliminated anything humanoid on his design. They gave him monkey-face and cow ears. That's awful. -Why choose Mark Acheson to voice him? He sounds like a thug, not an evil-doer. -In G1 Tirek was a satanic archetype, and in G4 he's a clichéd power-hungry tyrant. -Why was he called a Lord? A Lord of what? The G1 Tirek was probably the lord of Evil, but this one...? -They ripped off Arabus, another G1 villain. McCarthy probably knew there would be no brony to notice it, but I, a G1 fan did. Arabus in G1 was a shadow.sucking cloud demon. Tirek was basically the same, but less threatening and less insane. -Tirek in G4 grows size for no reason. In Arabus it made sense because he manifested himself into a storm monster. And that's pretty much all my rant.
I would like to imagine a parallel universe where MLP kept with the same style and writing of the pilot. It could have been up there with GI Joe or even Transformers. But in the end, they kiddified it and erased the work put into the pilot. BTW: has anyone noticed the artwork of the G1 pilot looks like the same style as Dungeons and Dragons.
You know what i need to see this. After being in the fandom for this many years i had never the urge to look it up but i might just do that now. I did see this when i was like 3 years old in the 90s but i cant remember anything but the castle.

Tirac already had power, and an army, and whatnot, so he had the ability to kidnap and transform ponies from the beginning. Tirek, on the other hand, needed to restore himself, and then grow stronger from there in order to cement his place as the new ruler. Tirek never really had a chance to turn into the same type of character that Tirac was.

You should(if can find it) :) Also another great villain from G1 is Emperor Grogar(or just Grogar) of Tambelon, he is a demonic goat necromanser(or so they say) that make spell with his horns (that's were G4 Tirek's power were inspired I guess) and which come from the bell on his neck, he ruled Ponyland(that's how the pony world of G1 is called, and the place where they live is called Dream Valley) with an iron fist before he was defeated when the ancient bell was rung, banishing him and the city to the Realm of Darknes for 500 years, and that returned(along side his minion Bray a donkey) but was defeated when the magic bell(the source of his power) was ringed destroying his power source and imprison them in Realm of Darkness by his own spell for ever. He appears in the episode arc "the Return of Tambelon".

Nothing like looking into lord tirek's past. He must have not only missed having powers, but must have missed having big muscles and looking young! If anyone noticed that whenever he takes magic by eating it, the more younger and stronger he looks! Awww he missed the old days!
Got to say, BOTH G1 and G4 versions of Tirek sound incredibly menacing. But I find G4's version to be the most dangerous. Not only does he grow to near god-like size with the magic he absorbed. But he managed to trick AND defeat Discord, the master of mischief and chaos. That right there is true feat of villainy

This is pretty dated for it's time, but it's an interesting piece of how My Little Pony was handled when it began. It's almost like people making it didn't want a complete representation of it's own commercial. Unlike G3 which pretty much covered in disgusting commercial and stereotype. G4 is brilliant as a show and it's nice to see it's origin wasn't as stupid as almost everyone believes it to be.

What did G1 Tirek do again? - Have the awesome G1 Transformers narrator voice, threaten to cut Spikes head off and turn ponies into dragons... I think G4 Tirek has a few extra points - No competition here!
I think G1 Tirak was more intimidating *because* he did less and was more of a mysterious, shadowy figure. Like, G4 Tirek would be Darth Maal, and G1 Tirek is like classic trilogy Darth Vader. When I think of Darth Maal I think of awesome lightsaber fights--but when I think of Darth Vader I think of him striding along to the Imperial March, intimidating even when he's doing nothing but walking off a shuttle.

I really think you have your Star wars comparisons confused - When I think of G4 Tirek, I think his silver tongue, his epic theme music, his revenge fuelled rage and conflicting emotions towards his brother - He is a full fledged character just like the original Darth Vader - G1 Tirek was just...a cool voice and a threatening presence - Like Darth Maul minus the cool voice as he only has one line in the entire movie - G1 Tirek has a REALLY cool voice but honestly he's not much else and all these people saying "OH G1 Tirek is so much more interesting then just the non-stop action of G4 Tirek!" just sound like wanna-be intellectuals who claim the original is always better because modern is terrible - Which it is for the most part but trying to make out that G4 Tirek is just a simplistic action villain is just plain lying - He's like a perfect cross between G1 Starscream and G1 Megatron from the original Transformers.

I found the huge size he got at the end to be more over the top and ridiculous then scary. To be honest, I have a hard time finding anything drawn in g4 artstyle to be scary or intimidating. and rainbow of darkness was a thing and fans wanted the evil elements to be a thing because of that. but nooo that would be to dark to have a element war. is funny that they already shown war over 3 times in the show and say an element battle would be to much? HA! there moments that a bad guy would've won is it wasn't for plot armor. like when Chrysalis 1st showed up. she straight up won the battle and toke over. if there's no plot armor after that. than there would be no way anyone could stop her at that point. even if Tirek toke magic. Chrysalis would already have half of the world's magic to make a difference.
Honestly, thinking of a young Tirek in his prime using the rainbow of darkness to establish his power over the world and then many years later instead talking all magic he could find to established his power sounds like something that a true villain would do " use your enemies strength agaisnt them"

From what I've heard G1 actually isn't a bad generation, I haven't watched it since I was a kid so I won't judge anything, but looking at this I think those people might be correct. This video kinda makes me want to watch it, I like the G1 toys so I'm hoping I'll like the cartoon in the same way. :)

Actually the franchise was even more popular back in the 80's than it is today. It's just that there weren't any male or adult fans back then. But even so, the original MLP was so popular among little girls that all things considered the G! franchise made even more money than the current G4 franchise.

Agree.. but G4 is still written for small girls. They in fact intend to bump up target audience in G5 though it is too early to debate about quality of the show. Still they did imply that lot of that in fact did happened in G4 past and some eldritch stuff still is present in the background.

Technically, G4 Tirek didn't die. He was simply returned to Tartarus. In Seasons 8 and 9, he is shown to be alive and well.

Tirek came back this season finale, and he was pants-soiling, magical nuke firing, city conquering raging badass amazing. He was clever, intimidating, ruthless and completely brutal. He wasn't an exact transcription of the g1 character, but I think he really did do the original tv special justice. He was the essence of what made Tirek an awesome villain in a tv special that otherwise lacked a lot of character in it's characters.
I think g4 Tirek has more attempted murder on his character sheet then any villain so far in MLP:FIM, if you don't count Nightmare Moon's whole apocalypse thing
I agree! I loved Tirek as a kid-Mom said I drew him a lot haha! But I lost it when I saw him again in this new generation. He was so scary, but that's what made him awesome! I hope to see more G1 villains make a come back like Grogar, Crunch the Rock Dog, or The fire demon from the princess ponies episode. Heck, it would be cool if Megan, Molly, Danny, and the Witches came back too.

There are many things that bug me about G4 Tirek. I've always loved G1 Tirek, he was easily the most awesome of villains in the MLP franchise, and still is.
But G4 Tirek...
-He was way too generic, something that every FiM villain suffer.
-They eliminated anything humanoid on his design. They gave him monkey-face and cow ears. That's awful.
-Why choose Mark Acheson to voice him? He sounds like a thug, not an evil-doer.
-In G1 Tirek was a satanic archetype, and in G4 he's a clichéd power-hungry tyrant.
-Why was he called a Lord? A Lord of what? The G1 Tirek was probably the lord of Evil, but this one...?
-They ripped off Arabus, another G1 villain. McCarthy probably knew there would be no brony to notice it, but I, a G1 fan did. Arabus in G1 was a shadow.sucking cloud demon. Tirek was basically the same, but less threatening and less insane.
-Tirek in G4 grows size for no reason. In Arabus it made sense because he manifested himself into a storm monster.
And that's pretty much all my rant.
I love the G4 version of Tirek and all.
But holy crap, is this version absolutely terrifying.

I would like to imagine a parallel universe where MLP kept with the same style and writing of the pilot. It could have been up there with GI Joe or even Transformers. But in the end, they kiddified it and erased the work put into the pilot. BTW: has anyone noticed the artwork of the G1 pilot looks like the same style as Dungeons and Dragons.

The mlp villain comparison is more situational. Tirac already had power, and an army, and whatnot, so he had the ability to kidnap and transform ponies from the beginning. Tirek, on the other hand, needed to restore himself, and then grow stronger from there in order to cement his place as the new ruler. Tirek never really had a chance to turn into the same type of character that Tirac was.

Well, G1 Tirac has several servants, and a dark rainbow that pretty much does everything for him, while G4 Tirek had just escaped a prison designed to keep In the worst threats that had ever been defeated in Equestria, after a LONG time, and needed to become more powerful to rise up again. Of course one would look more threatening than another.

Also another great villain from G1 is Emperor Grogar(or just Grogar) of Tambelon, he is a demonic goat necromanser(or so they say) that make spell with his horns (that's were G4 Tirek's power were inspired I guess) and which come from the bell on his neck, he ruled Ponyland(that's how the pony world of G1 is called, and the place where they live is called Dream Valley) with an iron fist before he was defeated when the ancient bell was rung, banishing him and the city to the Realm of Darknes for 500 years, and that returned(along side his minion Bray a donkey) but was defeated when the magic bell(the source of his power) was ringed destroying his power source and imprison them in Realm of Darkness by his own spell for ever.
He appears in the episode arc "the Return of Tambelon".

This is pretty dated for it's time, but it's an interesting piece of how My Little Pony was handled when it began. It's almost like people making it didn't want a complete representation of it's own commercial. Unlike G3 which pretty much covered in disgusting commercial and stereotype.
G4 is brilliant as a show and it's nice to see it's origin wasn't as stupid as almost everyone believes it to be.

I think G1 Tirak was more intimidating *because* he did less and was more of a mysterious, shadowy figure.
Like, G4 Tirek would be Darth Maal, and G1 Tirek is like classic trilogy Darth Vader. When I think of Darth Maal I think of awesome lightsaber fights--but when I think of Darth Vader I think of him striding along to the Imperial March, intimidating even when he's doing nothing but walking off a shuttle.

I really think you have your Star wars comparisons confused - When I think of G4 Tirek, I think his silver tongue, his epic theme music, his revenge fuelled rage and conflicting emotions towards his brother - He is a full fledged character just like the original Darth Vader - G1 Tirek was just...a cool voice and a threatening presence - Like Darth Maul minus the cool voice as he only has one line in the entire movie - G1 Tirek has a REALLY cool voice but honestly he's not much else and all these people saying "OH G1 Tirek is so much more interesting then just the non-stop action of G4 Tirek!" just sound like wanna-be intellectuals who claim the original is always better because modern is terrible - Which it is for the most part but trying to make out that G4 Tirek is just a simplistic action villain is just plain lying - He's like a perfect cross between G1 Starscream and G1 Megatron from the original Transformers.

I found the huge size he got at the end to be more over the top and ridiculous then scary. To be honest, I have a hard time finding anything drawn in g4 artstyle to be scary or intimidating.
