I’m an Aussie and was listening to the MLB highlights in the car. when he hit the 50th HR, I had to pull over and sat there with hands on my head in shock, then finished it off with 9th inning HR. Unbelievable.
Ohtani offered the Dodgers a pretty sweet deal, really he’s only taking two million dollars a year in salary. Almost all of his money is deferred-with zero interest! The deferred money still costs LA against the cap, but only partially. Ohtani’s contract costs the dodgers 43 or 46 million dollars a year for cap purposes, which is a lot, but it’s not crippling. Most of the best NBA players make around 40 or 50 million dollars and the NBA cap is a lot harder than baseball’s cap. The ceiling is also a lot lower. It remains to be seen how many great years we get out of Shohei. He turned 24 during his first season & he he’s 30 now. baseball players who perform at an elite level past age 35 or so are pretty bloody rare. There were a bunch of ‘em during the steroid era. Position players tend to age like milk after age 30, however. There have only been four non-juicers to win an MVP aged 35 and older. One of them, Dennis Eckersley, was a relief pitcher. I loved Eck & still do. He’s one of the all-time great closers and watching him go from hero to zero and back to hero after he conquered his addiction issues was amazing. He really shouldn’t have won the MVP in ‘92, however. But he did & God bless him. He wasn’t a position player. Though. The three position players who won MVPs aged 35 & over who weren’t juiced to the moon were Willie Stargell in 1979, Mike Schmidt in 1986 & Hank Sauer in 1952. Stargell was 38. Schmitty was 36 & Sauer was 35. There have been other position players who’ve remained effective into their 30s but they’be always been the exception to the rule. Pitchers, on the other hand, tend to mature a little later than hitters. It’s not nearly as uncommon for a pitcher maintain his dominance in his 30s as it is for hitters. Shohei, of course, is a pretty talented pitcher. He’s top 5-10 in the league when he’s healthy.

Williams’ manager asked him if he wanted to sit out the doubleheader because his average of .3996 would round up to .400. Williams said no he wanted to play both games of the doubleheader. Williams went 6 for 8 that day and raised his average to .406. Last man to hit .400 and what a gutsy way to finish the season off. That’s why Williams is such a legend.
This is what I was thinking as well. I believe it was a last day of the season double header, which how many of those have ever happened. But "technically" that was over 2 games. One day, but 2 games, which might make it more impressive now that I think about it.

Just a footnote here. 138 steals is a record set by Hugh Nicol in 1887, when runners were credited for a stolen base if they took an extra base on a hit by another player (i.e. if they went from 1st to third on a single). Rickey Henderson stole 130 bases in 1982 WITHOUT that rule. If that rule had been in place in 1982, Rickey might have had 200+ steals.
Dan makes the most pertinent point about Belle and doubles: they are just another slugging stat. The reason homeruns and steals are linked is because they showcase different tools in a player's arsenal. To get 50 steals when 50 opportunities are negated by homeruns is mind boggling. For a player to have the speed, awareness, and finesse to steal 50 times is unheard of for a slugger. No one talks about dual slugging milestones, they are essential the same skill.
To me, the closest comp is Wayne Gretzky scoring 5 goals to reach 50 in 39 games. Just like with Shohei, it seemed destined that he was going to reach the milestone, but nobody would have called it that day.
This was, at the very least, ONE of the best games I've ever witnessed in my lifetime in terms of batting. Up there with Shawn Green's 6-6 night with 4 HRs, 19 total bases, 6 runs & 7 RBIs or Mark Whiten's 4 HR, 12 RBI performance or Josh Hamilton going 5 for 5 with 4 HRs, or Tatis hitting 2 grand slams...IN 1 INNING, and of course Ohtani's double-header with the Angels when he pitched a 1-hit shut-out in the first game and followed that up going 2 for 3 with 2 HRs in the second game.

I'd say this game was one of the best, ever. And the Marlins' manager showed both total class and true baseball love/spirit. Most teams would not have pitched to him. In fact, even the crowd getting into it was just phenomenal. The Dodgers' announcer did Vin Scully proud! Baseball has always had heroes. But baseball is AMERICA'S PASTTIME. The reason why 50/50 is more impressive with stolen bases rather than doubles is because doubles and home runs are both power numbers. Stolen base equates to speed, so speed and power are two different attributes.
It was the greatest game I’ve seen since Kerry Wood stuck out 20. That was great. But the Dodgers made the playoffs and that was the deciding game. You can’t write it better than than that.
This is so different all on its own because the guy hit 50 Home runs by batting those in and at the same time he ran to steal 50 stolen bases to execute that. Two different things altogether to reach that magical 50 number in the same game nonetheless within the same year.

They are missing the point. Yes, people have stolen more than 50 bases and people have hit more than 50 homers, BUT to do both in the same season is incredible because most home run hitters can’t run and most runners can’t hit homers. No one else has ever done it in 120+ years of baseball. That would be like someone getting 500 assists and 500 blocks in an NBA season.

You hit a perfect game, made your career, made history, and came in clutch for your team's season. What other dimension could another performance be better?

This is what I was thinking as well. I believe it was a last day of the season double header, which how many of those have ever happened. But "technically" that was over 2 games. One day, but 2 games, which might make it more impressive now that I think about it.

It’s more fun, certainly; and I’m really glad that MLB tweaked to rules to make base-stealing more worthwhile, but 50 doubles & 50 homers is demonstrably more valuable than 50 homers and & 50 steals. There’s only one guy who’s pulled that combo off, too, btw, and that was during baseball’s strike-shortened 144 game 1995 season. (Albert Belle had 52 doubles & 50 homers for Cleveland in 1995.)

If you're going to talk about long balls and hitting prowess like HR and DB, you'd have to talk about total bases. having 50HR/50DB is a humongous feat, no doubt, and I strongly believe Albert Belle should get more ecognition for that. But looking at it TB wise, Belle of 1995 had 377, Judge 2022 had 391, Barry 2001* had 411*. Shohei this year already has 377. Do you see where I'm getting at? Shohei has the same amount of TB as 95 Belle already with 51 steals. Bell 95 had 5 steals.
I was a big Albert Belle fan back then and furious about Mo winning the MVP (I still am), and I appreciate people bringing his name up again, but I don't think his 95 season compares with Ohtani's 2024.

Im really not quite sure why I’ve several people in this thread and Dan P In the clip keep discrediting doubles. The single season record for 2Bs is lower than the the top 7 Home Run seasons. It’s not just this “oh well when you just miss a homer you get a double” you guys keep making it out to be.

For the doubles argument, I'm not discrediting doubles, I'm evaluating them within the context. Players aim for homers, they don't aim for doubles. Doesn't that explain for why the single season record for 2Bs is lower than the the top 7 Home Run seasons?
And for the 50/50 argument, HR & SB require totally opposite skillsets while HR & 2B don't. I'm not saying hitting 2B are easier than SB, it isn't. It just so happens that it's much harder for HR batters to steal bases than to hit doubles. That's my take.
And for the total base stuff, I just gave it for the sake of reference to look at when we're looking just at hitting achievements. I just said Ohtani already has 377, which is a fact, nothing more or less. Judge has more, I presume, and Acuna had more last season. I don't think that takes anything away from Shohei's 50/50 because it's a totally different story. But if you're talking about HR & 2B, it does count doesn' it?
So, I think we could make an argument comparing Aaron Judge's 2022 season with Belle's 1995 season rather than comparing it to Shohei's 2024. Then we could say Belle would've had more total bases had the season been 162 games and so on. The fact that Ohtani has 377 TB in 153 games would only be relevant to the 50/50 conversation if we considered whether Belle would've stole 44 more bases in his 18 games that was lost to the shortened season. That's how different the two feats are.
But, you know, I was a big Albert Belle fan back in the day, and I thank you for bringing his name up. He needs more recognition than he's getting, that's for sure. And as I've already said, I'm still mad about Mo's MVP.

Just a footnote here. 138 steals is a record set by Hugh Nicol in 1887, when runners were credited for a stolen base if they took an extra base on a hit by another player (i.e. if they went from 1st to third on a single). Rickey Henderson stole 130 bases in 1982 WITHOUT that rule. If that rule had been in place in 1982, Rickey might have had 200+ steals.

Dan makes the most pertinent point about Belle and doubles: they are just another slugging stat. The reason homeruns and steals are linked is because they showcase different tools in a player's arsenal. To get 50 steals when 50 opportunities are negated by homeruns is mind boggling. For a player to have the speed, awareness, and finesse to steal 50 times is unheard of for a slugger. No one talks about dual slugging milestones, they are essential the same skill.
To me, the closest comp is Wayne Gretzky scoring 5 goals to reach 50 in 39 games. Just like with Shohei, it seemed destined that he was going to reach the milestone, but nobody would have called it that day.

This was, at the very least, ONE of the best games I've ever witnessed in my lifetime in terms of batting. Up there with Shawn Green's 6-6 night with 4 HRs, 19 total bases, 6 runs & 7 RBIs or Mark Whiten's 4 HR, 12 RBI performance or Josh Hamilton going 5 for 5 with 4 HRs, or Tatis hitting 2 grand slams...IN 1 INNING, and of course Ohtani's double-header with the Angels when he pitched a 1-hit shut-out in the first game and followed that up going 2 for 3 with 2 HRs in the second game.
You could argue other performances were more important, but this was the greatest statistical game for an individual player ever.

Dan, I am glad you brought up Don Larsen's "perfect game", as each generation tends to forget the past in selecting what they feel is the best they have ever seen. I'd say this game was one of the best, ever. And the Marlins' manager showed both total class and true baseball love/spirit. Most teams would not have pitched to him. In fact, even the crowd getting into it was just phenomenal. The Dodgers' announcer did Vin Scully proud! Baseball has always had heroes. But baseball is AMERICA'S PASTTIME. The reason why 50/50 is more impressive with stolen bases rather than doubles is because doubles and home runs are both power numbers. Stolen base equates to speed, so speed and power are two different attributes.
It was the greatest game I’ve seen since Kerry Wood stuck out 20. That was great. But the Dodgers made the playoffs and that was the deciding game. You can’t write it better than than that.
This is so different all on its own because the guy hit 50 Home runs by batting those in and at the same time he ran to steal 50 stolen bases to execute that. Two different things altogether to reach that magical 50 number in the same game nonetheless within the same year.
What does he do for an encore? Maybe pitching in the World Series and winning. That would make this season the greatest season of all time.

Yes, people have stolen more than 50 bases and people have hit more than 50 homers, BUT to do both in the same season is incredible because most home run hitters can’t run and most runners can’t hit homers. No one else has ever done it in 120+ years of baseball. That would be like someone getting 500 assists and 500 blocks in an NBA season.

The problem with the doubles statistic is that all triples could also be doubles. That being said, Albert Belle was a beast in '95, he should have had a better legacy.
