@@jossanharper1208ohtani's peak is unreal currently. He is about to have 3 mvps in just 4 years. Only juiced up bonds has more mvps in 4 years. Before that even he couldn't beat this stretch. He legitimately is having one of the craziest peaks in the history of the sport, even if you ignore the countless records he owns. He has set multiple records every single year since 2021. I'm not even kidding. He can still break at least one more record this year he's tied for most games with a hr and sb with rickey henderson at 13. If he does it again he will hold that record too.

Shohei is still early in his career, so it's fair for these people to not crown him as the greatest ever just yet. I think us younger generation people tend to do that too often. We see a player in a major US sport have a spectacular season and we immediately start putting him near the top all-time.

I think you are right. I think he only mentioned 2 black athletes there with Reggie Jackson and Bonds. Pujols did the same thing Jackson did only more recent in the 2011 World Series. Also the McGwire vs Sosa HR race in 98 was bigger (hype wise) than Bonds record season or his all time chase. What about Freese and his phenomenal series and his game 6 in the 2011 WS as well? None of them were to his liking I suppose.

During his career he was ingesting an extract from sheep's testicles in order to get more testosterone into his system. It made him sick once and the New York media covered it up. I heard a stat yesterday that made this even more amazing. There is no single player in MLB history who has had the combination of: going 6-6, hit 3HR, had 2 SB, and had 10 RBI’s in their CAREER. He did this all in 1 game!!! It’s truly amazing. I currently live in Japan and I can’t tell you how proud the Japanese are of Shohei. He is a gentleman as well as the greatest player in MLB history. I used to hesitate to say that b/c I respect the history of baseball and all of Babe Ruth’s accomplishments, but damn, this is pretty ridiculous. We are fortunate to be able to experience this. It’s like watching Michael or Tiger or Jack or Ali in their prime.

The greatest part about this is the fact that….they won. Unlike every time he did something that hadn’t happened since 1920 when he was with the angels.
It is very likely that there will never be another player like Shohei Ohtani. Even when he retires, he will forever be talked about like Babe Ruth. We are lucky to live in the same era and be able to watch him play now. If I lived in the US, I would take time off work to go see him too.

Prime was a beast on special teams and defense in the NFL. Ohtani is a beast on offense and defense in MLB.

But as far as level of performance, Ohtani is light years ahead of Prime. Nevertheless, I still think Bo is the king because even Ohtani has a predecessor (Ruth) who did what he's doing (somewhat). There's absolutely no one else in history who has ever done what Bo did, which is why he's the greatest athlete ever in American team sports, IMHO.

One of the greatest individual accomplishment in one game in modern SPORTS history, when the competition is at it’s highest. It’s like watching Kobe score 81 points, MJ dropping 63 pts in the playoffs, like watching Tiger Woods beating the field at the Masters by 12 strokes… Ohtani 6 for 6, 2 doubles, 2 steals, 3 HR, 10 RBI on a day where he founded the 50-50 club and topped if off by going 51-51.

Agreed. Like many things with Ohtani, that game also flew under the radar. Glad he’s finally getting his due credit this year. It’s funny that it took nice round numbers (50/50) to get the well deserved attention. I’ve been checking his box score every game since 2021, it’s the most fun I’ve had following the regular season since 1998.

This is a great accomplishment. It will probably never be duplicated again. His biggest advantage in today’s game is the diluted pitching because of expansion. There are so many pitchers that would never had made a major league roster when Mantel, Maris, Aaron and many others played.
Underrated comment. Yet very relevant and true to a significant degree.
You also must consider the global nature of the game (Japan, Latin America) that has created a much greater talent pool to draw from than you had in bygone eras of MLB. Also, the specter of racial segregation kept Ruth from facing all the best U.S.-born baseball players. So, these factors mitigate your point to some extent.
Overall though, I've been watching MLB for 50 years and I agree that the general quality of pitching has declined significantly in this current era.

@@DigThugDoug It's not about just the pitching velocity or even movement on those pitches. It's about the changing standards of the game over time. A larger strike zone favors pitchers and a smaller strike zone favors hitters.
The fact is that in 1950 the official strike zone (and the way strikes were actually called) was significantly smaller than it is today and from 1963 until 1988 it the strike zone was super tiny in both respects compared to where it is today. Since 1988 the official strike zone has moved from the top of the knee to just below the knee, and it's moved up from the armpits to the top of the shoulders.
So it's easier to pitch today than it was in 1950, 1963 or 1969 when the strike zone rules changed (prior to 1988). Since 1996 it has been super easy to pitch strikes compared to what pitchers facing Mantle, Mays and Aaron had to deal with. A Gibson, a Blyleven or a Perry would have 400 wins if they played under these rules.
High velocity pitching with movement is MUCH harder to do under the old rules. For example, nowadays Aroldis Chapman (a high-velocity pitcher with a large statistical sample size) is considered great. In 1950 he would be labeled a novelty with control issues.
Also, remember there was a dead ball era in MLB when the ball was softer and didn't carry as well. All of these are real factors. So those old pitchers like Cy Young had an advantage over pitchers in latter eras.
So, yes, Ohtani has historical advantages because the most recent rule changes favor offense (pitch clock, outlawimg the shift, etc.). And in a roundabout way he has a historic advantage as a hitter because the pitching talent pool is diluted (too many teams) and the pitchers are less disciplined today.
But he's still GOAT-great, not just great. Lord help today's pitchers if they had to face Ohtani under the old rules. He'd break the record for total bases for sure on top of everything else.
