The argument of “well do it for the passion” is one of the most incredibly absurd, idiotic things I’ve heard.
Rog used his time, equipment, gas money, talent, etc to contribute to a piece of media that made a company money, and you have to be unbelievably ignorant to think he doesn’t have every right to compensated for that. It doesn’t matter the profession, Roger’s services helped people make money, and he deserves to be properly compensated, and thats where the discussion ends. Period.
Imagine if Crail Tap told Eldy today “hey we want to pay you in product and maybe $50 here and there to work for us (doing whatever he does for them). You have a ‘passion’ for skateboarding so it shouldn’t matter right?” I highly doubt he would be okay with that.

I am so grateful for people like Roger that are willing to tell it like it is. Skating is obviously fun and we all obviously love it but after that 4 hour session rent needs to get paid. The internet has created an open season type of scenario where it's anyones game. Anyone can monetize anything now and it's amazing (for the most part). It discredits all the gatekeeping too. It is so important that you guys talk about topics like this and I love it. At the end of the day we're all blessed to be able to make any money off of skating but basketball players are blessed to making money off basketball as well. For better or for worse, skating might be at a certain corporate level now but it's not at the same level as major league sports. WE have wiggle room to monetize and make our own living in skating with the current state of the internet.

i disagree, i think skateboarding is a recreational activity and the attempt to profit off of it hasn't been done properly by many people, look at supreme, look at braille skateboarding, look at the berrics, these places are profitable content sources, and profitable companies. Ad revenue goes to those who get the most eyes, sales go to the people that market products the best.

    • @mirraco323
      @mirraco323 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      0. .0 Even though I do find a lot of the stuff that those companies do (Braille, Berrics, etc) cringe worthy, I think most of the hate towards Revive, Braille, or those kind of companies in the industry is because they make way more money than most “core” companies and a lot of people are very bitter and jealous. I hate to mention him because I think he’s a good guy, but when Heath Brinkley came on here and took a shit on Revive. Take away all hatred for Revive one may have, and objectively it came off like he was just sour grapes that they probably sell way more boards and merchandise than his company does. He can paint it all he wants that he doesn’t like them because they “undercut board prices and that’s bad to do to skateboarding” but in reality he just doesn’t like them because they make way more fucking money than he does, end of story. If Revive can make more money by knowing selling their boards for $37 because they will sell so many of them, that’s not their fault! Tough shit if you don’t like it. What are they supposed to do, not make the most money they can? That’s fucking asinine.
And my grand point is I agree, companies that have people who actually know what they’re doing in business are hated on because a lot of “skater” owned companies don’t know what they’re doing with money are extremely envious of these guys.

I definitely feel what Roger's saying. Having worked in the music industry for the last 15 years, I see a lot of parallels there. Filmers are a lot like audio engineers...they are essential to their industries but the least appreciated and often the last to be paid. Yes, do it for the love, earn your place, but know your worth. Justin needs to check himself for a second and let the man air this shit out.

Oh yeah the music industry can be just as fucked up. I don’t have enough fingers to count the amount of bands I know who have been absolutely screwed and robbed by record labels. You have the CEO of the label acting like the label can’t afford to give the band any of their royalties that they’re contractually owed, while he drives around in a fucking Mercedes, because he knows the artists/band don’t have the financial resources to sue the company. It’s absolute robbery.

However, on the other spectrum, I can see where Kelly and Eldy are coming from in explaining that skateboarding is the same as living an artists lifestyle: one where you pursue your passion and you are not meant to live lavishly or even comfortably for that matter. Eldy was being too rough with Roger at times which I didn’t appreciate. Anyone else agree?

Filmers need a guild or union of sorts, one that qualifies them as professionals based on X amount of hours of filming they've done. Once you've gone pro, you get an agent (that works for the guild) that books your jobs. Yes, a cut of what you get paid goes to the "guild" and your agent, but they'll both be making sure you get more money than before.

Its not as easy as walking away and making a lot of money elsewhere. You dedicated your time and your effort to hone a skill that is underpaid. Its funny watching this clip, cause theres another nine club clip thats much more recent where the team is discussing a filmer filming an amazingly captured bowl line and Chris, Eldy, Kelly (and Steez if he was there) were all blown away by the photography/bowl line and as impressive as the bowl line was they were seeminly even more impressed by the talent of the filmer to stay in flow cruising the bowl so perfectly smooth well being focused on filming the riders bowl line... and if memory is correct Rog is pretty silent during the clip just sitting there sipping beer with a giant smile on his face and once there all done speaking in bewilderment over the filmers talent Rog quickly and confidently chimes in with the "pay your filmographers."

Love this - Would love to see and hear more from the filmers and explore more of that. Have a new respect for them again after filming and sending the clips to the homies. Even that can be a lot of work so within the industry must be head melting stuff.

"No one can survive getting paid clip to clip". $35 is BEANS and that's probably above rate for what most companies are willing to pay for a single clip they just want to put in IG. You can't live on that. Filming is almost always part time level work unless you're doing it full time week to week and there's almost always sacrifice involved. Editing is ALWAYS where the money comes into play with video production. Filming doesn't pay the bills by itself without an edit to suit your footage. Internships are bullshit. Treat your content as gold. Don't give out anything for free. If filming's gonna be your hustle, have a price ready (whether that's product or $$$$$) & be personable. FREE ADVERTISING ISN'T PAYMENT. THAT'S A SCAM. I also blame the riders for the "give me free" economy. Too many people taking product as payment.
Eldridge making the typical counterpoint that I've never agreed with. That's the same argument companies make to NOT pay filmers. I demand a "Filmer's grievance" episode.

The "do it for the passion dude" guys on the show don't understand that to even break even from equipment, transport costs, incidentals, and time (vs hours at mcdonalds) requires real cash. They think that just because their wage at 16 was a box of boards shipped to their parents' house that a grown man should accept the same for his professional video work.

I always come back to rewatch these clips when Rog talks about the struggles of being a filmer, like he has went through so much shit and been used by companies and everything. So he is pouring his heart out, he is speaking up for every filmer out there. Chris and Steezus are the ones really trying to understand what Rog speaks about. Meanwhile Kelly and Justin just speak about the love for skateboarding, you can't pay rent and bills with love. Skaters need to be able to look at it from both sides, from the loving side and also from the realistic side.

    Speaking the truth Rog 🙏.
People who don't experience certain situations will never understand the struggle and frustrations involved with it. I'm a "pro" Kiteboarder and shoot videos for various kite companies, it's exactly as you describe it in Skateboarding but 100x worse (maybe more) hahaha.

Skateboarder gets from the wheels/bearings/board, grip, shoes etc all the way up to the beanie/cap makes its helluva lot easier to do it for the love when cameras, lens, lights etc comes out of the filmers pockets and then they don't get paid...
Roge was on point about it all..

I come back to this video occasionally because this is a conversation that every industry. while Eldy really did annoy me during the talk (and I do love Eldy), he isn't alone in his mindset - in the real world, there are people who will perceive value based off the degree of difficulty it is to complete. To a skater, who's body is on the line, the filmer has the easier job because they just have to stand there and be ready, and to the filmer, who's wallet keeps being depleted, the skater has it easier since they just have to do what they love. The reality is that both of these guys are being shortchanged by a multimillion dollar company, because there's no transparency across the board.
Ownership has been and will always be the unspoken conversation that the people in power will casually ignore - there's a reason why record labels own the rights to the music that's going out, and why film studios own the rights to the name and the content in perpetuity and across the universe, because they can pay you one time under market value and they can recoup and profit forever.

I think filmers should profit for being a big part of skaters becoming pros and Roger is absolutely right about that you can't live getting paid per clip. I think filmers can imitate sports agents business model and sign a deal with a skater to promote the skater then get a percentage of the sign on fee when the skater gets sponsored by a bigger company. Imagine if you can promote 10-15 up an coming skaters and get a percentage once a he/she gets a big sponsor/contract. I'm not in the business but l guess 5-10 000 dollars would be no problem for Nike or Adidas if they want the skater to their team. You could also make such deals with companies.

This is a very important discussion that goes beyond skateboarding and I'm happy to see it tackled here. Literally every industry has these types of problems. Companies will always try to take advantage of the fact that you're "doing something you love", as if the only time you should get paid is if you're suffering - which little do they know, we literally suffer for our art and desire to create. I've been skateboarding for 20 years but made the transition early on into taking my photography/ videography to other industries that I also enjoyed, I've seen it all, been through it all including doing work for free early on. The thing that has allowed me to become and now remain successful was understanding my value and ultimately really treating what I do as a business even though I love it. When you set yourself up with this mindset you will gradually burn away the free loaders and "this is great exposure for you" crowd. We live in an age where content is king - every company needs it, everyone is attempting to create it but not many people are good at it. If you're good at it, get paid well for it. Also, set your prices higher than you want to, almost to the point where it makes you uncomfortable, because it's easier to offer someone/company a discount than it is to try to charge more.
