As you heard, Paul's been trying to get the educational knowledge out there for many years. The skate companies rather keep their facade marketing based, keep the tribal knowledge and the other sleazy details with their propeller heads.
why is it dope? not to say it isnt, but like are you watchin skate parts, losing your mind, like "THESE GUYS NEED TO PERFECT THEIR SETUP TO REACH MAX POTENTIAL!!!!"
Why would you not want to see talented dudes being able to display their ultimate by having the best gear possible? Skateboarding is the same as everything else, just less tools. It's better to watch a woodworker go to work with the best equipment rather than trying to watch him make a masterpiece with a hammer and chisel and cheap wood glue. @@joemackenzie7417

Yeah I love the idea behind lithe, but its really different. I think Powell Peralta nailed it. Some dudes I know are 40 plus like me, and skate Vert, pools and bowls mainly. They all love these Powell Peralta flight decks. I found light trucks with my flight deck fucking ruled, I can concentrate more on a higher kickflip or heelflip than trying to do a proper flip. In that I mean, it takes less effort to get my Ollie's , flips and grinds easier. I skate street though, not like my friends. Each to their own my fellow skater

@@BG-fh5me Real decks are one of the best boards along with everything Deluxe makes such as Baker, Deathwish, Anti Hero, never liked powell flight decks they have no stiffness and bend too much for me

i have known paul schmitts name. I HAVE NEVER KNOWN HOW INCREDIBLE PAUL SCHMITT IS. what an incredible guy. i wish he would do world tours and teach skaters this kind of knowledge at the parks and skateshops
My first deck was the RIPSAW followed by many, many decks that have become the stuff of collections since. At 46 I am just glad to be able to ride and enjoy the smooth glide and physical fitness it provides!
I feel like everything he said went in one ear and out the other for Crob. I'd love to hear him talk about this stuff with someone interested.

I am the same way and kind have always seen the science aspect of skateboarding. Ive actually had friends tell me that I tweaked and changed things too much. Skateboarding is simply physics and finding the leverage points. I remember measuring my inseam to see if I needed a longer board or a shorter more compact board. Bushings, trucks, wheels, concave, can all be different relative to your body type. It all makes a difference once you become more advanced.

I've been pressing my own boards from scratch for a few months now and I've taken a lot in from what Paul has to say and it has helped me dramatically!
Great conversation! I wish I thought about this stuff more when I skated daily. That, and foot positioning/shoe shape.

I am one of those "few" people that care way too much about physics and why/how my board is doing what its doing than doing the actual tricks. If only we could all change variables on so on-the-fly, it would be a wonderful learning experience
its not very difficult to make the changes outlined. 5 mins and you can make any single changed noted, granted you planned ahead and have parts. I am in the middle of this right now. Get some asst bushings, washers small and large, a couple sets of trucks etc. dont do more than one change at a time. test move on. super basic
A small wheel base feels really nice, like the board is responsive and easy to control
I'm skating a chocolate 9.25 with a 13.875 wheelbase for my size 14 feet. It is huge but compact and is responsive as hell. Strong as a tank not a chip or dent yet and barely any razor tail 5 months in. Best standard 7 ply Maple deck I've tried so far.

@@californiapoontappa yes it's massive but for my feet it's just right and it flips and spins like nothing. Huge, heavy (Indy titanium 169s), but responsive as fuck.
The people who care are usually older have the fund to experiment with different setups. Alot of people who don't care about the setup are just thankful they have a setup.

Im paying attention here. I am an artist and luthier looking to make my first deck. I have learned so much from Paul. I will definitely be applying what I learned. I know what I want and I know what I want it to do. Paul is the glue for the project. I am definitely going to pay tribute to him. He deserves most of the credit. Thank you guys for the content. This is some golden stuff.

I'd like to hear this guy's take on light trucks vs heavy trucks. Most people usually think lighter trucks let you Ollie higher but I've seen quite a few pro's that prefer standard heavy trucks and think that they allow them to pop it higher.
This is a question of angular momentum... since angular momentum is a linear equation, the weight of the truck remains negligible if velocity is constant. However, the speed of the nose lifting into the air before the tail pops is an acceleration of speed instead of staying a constant velocity, and better skaters master this acceleration motion on the pop. conclusion: Having a heavier truck would result in more upward momentum with proper (and extremely difficult) acceleration of your front truck into the air
They don’t all use the same trucks because they want you to get use to the their number and stay with them. It’s to confuse you into being a loyal consumer

It’s crazy how just few people think about this in skateboarding, whereas in other sports such as, Snowboarding, wakeboarding or surfing each board is completely different and these things make a big difference in how the riding feels.

I’ve always rotated my wheels and I’ve always known what different lengths and steepnesses do but I do mostly skate shaped boards

Wish there was more 8.25 decks with 14.5 wheelbases. I use ace trucks so the offset inwards turns it into a perfect 14.25 wheelbase.

I got one of those lithe carbon fiber boards and they're pretty damn good, they do sound a little funky though...

maybe it's just me but I feel like caring what it sounds like is pretty fucking dumb. I'd care about how it rides.
@@theharvardyard2356 How it sounds is a characteristic of how it rides... You want a board to have a crisp, snappy, popping sound...aka lively sound vs. a dead sound... a snappy board vs. a soggy board, to some people the addition of fiberglasses and carbon fibers deaded the natural crispiness sound of a traditional maple board.
It's mostly a mental thing, if you been skating 20+ years and all you know is 7 ply maple decks you've become vary accustomed to the characteristics of maple decks from the sound, snap/pop, flex/stiffness etc... now switch to a advance tech board and everything youve ever known changes completely, all those characteristics you know of 7ply maple decks are slightly different with advance tech boards.
Just think of it this way, If you play ice hockey and use a composite hockey stick, try playing with a wooden one... there both sticks that shot pucks but the way they feel and play is much different. I beleive nowadays that every pro hockey player uses comp. sticks (a few players held out for years and years but have finally given in or retired by now)
Depending on your age you might not realize this... when comp hockey sticks first hit the market there was many players that didnt accept the tech. as useful/good, nowadays brands have little to no focus on wooden sticks at all.
With each coming skate generation, advance tech boards will become more common place... The retro rippers over 30 likely have little to no experience with advance tech boards but if your under 30 chances are you've tried at least one or two advanced tech board over the years... from the old element featherlight and hellium decks, to darkstar armour lites, almost impact and uber lights, santa cruz vx, and powel flight decks and im sure im leaving out many others as well but the point being that depending on the era you grew up in skating advance tech boards are less of an oddity.
Kelly's point is simply that it would be odd and unnatural to him to skate anything but 7 play maple boards... just like for chris it would feel odd and unnatural for him to skate anything bigger then 7.75.

I’m a pretty big guy 6’5 230lbs sizes so I always try to play around with different setups and shapes
Paul: "Well that deck is 0.45 mm longer so this one is gonna jump shorter than that one. Not to mention that this 7 ply is slightly more compressed. I also noticed that this deck width is perfectly compatible with Indy 139s down to the micrometer. so I'm gonna get this one"

More of this. Crob’s right in that it’s a smaller percentage of people who care about detail like this, but I suspect that is changing.
Back in 98 I got my first board, I didn’t know shit so I ended up get a really wide board and didn’t realize it until a few years ago. Haven’t skated at all much after. But I remember not being able to land anything (besides a front side flip and kick/heel flip). I was always able to get the board to do the trick but never land. I was small so I think I’d do way better now. I’ll probably go with a 8” or 81/4

I'm always intrigued when the talk of a twin tip comes up. I'm part of the small population that prefers a twin nose/tail, along with each truck setup the same. I don't like worrying about which way my board is when setting up for a trick of skating a line.
I always wanted a twin deck, but more for OCD reasons than anything..

Most park snowboards are twin so its the same weight on both sides so its balanced. Wouldnt that make sense for a skateboard too? I never understood why the nose looked smaller on a skateboard when i was a kid

They could even have other skaters come on to dicuss how Schmitt and/or Mullen have help them over the years figuring out the perfect board setups or perfect trick technique etc

Welcome to the world of engineering. There’s often a lot of thought and intent behind the simple things you look at or use on a daily basis.
Been looking for a 7.5" board with hard-core concave for soo long I noticed my flips have been weak with all these 8" boards that feel like they barely have concave
80% of what Roger says I can not understand
Ppl usually don't understand until they have enough freak accident injuries...if you want a long pro career you should want a perfect setup...lot less risk when confident with your setup...all my bad injuries came from small changes, but when i had the right gear for the situation things felt easy...if you find the right setup early you will get really good fast, if you ride bad grip you likely won't last long in skating...another example is you could pop out of grinds better with low trucks, you also don't have to ollie as high with low trucks, each person is diff so find what you like early on...it's a big deal to learn this stuff early and use it to your advantage.

I specifically said examples...those are basic examples of diff ways of thinking about a setup, i was telling lessons i learned early on and it was not about him, i don't speak for him...i learned about things he was talking about because of freak accidents, some of what he says i learned early on and it was obvious to me...btw i tried telling ppl many years ago and they did not understand what i was telling them, they just did not see things the same as i did...i wanted to understand why certain events happened to learn from it...you made it about me when i agree with him, it makes no sense.

Skateboard companies could learn a lot from the snowboarding industry. The tech that goes into snowboards have come a long way, while skateboards have generally stayed the same.
im so confused so is a skateboard's wheelbase from inner truck bolt to inner truck bolt or wheel to wheel or truck axle to truck axle
i have a 32 inseam 5 9 and can ollie from flat to almost 4 ft. its the jump that matters
Just cause you jump high dont mean you'll be able to ollie high... so no its not the jump that matters, its the relationship and synergy between all of your components and your own physcial abilities.
You think you can jump/ollie high on the setup you got now... go ahead and try out a cruiser/shaped board thats 9-10" wide with a 15-16" wheel base, 60mm wheels, 9" trucks and see how drastically your ollie height decreases... if your stilll able to ollie at all.
If you consulted with prof. Schmitt he'd have you olliing 4 1/2-5 ft ;) :P by singling in on your perfect deck shape.
