I'm pretty sure it's the fact that the set only uses cold color shades and no warm colors. If you compare it to something like 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol you'll notice what I'm talking about. Using those warm colors (different browns) really makes the ruin feel more alive and less bland. I reeeally like many things in this set based on this video, but I'd have to order a huge bunch of replacement parts to liven up the colors a bit and maybe modify some parts to make it more "play worthy" with features. For me the pricing on the site is 330€ which is already more expensive than the $290 for US based people, and then adding in maybe 50+€ worth of replacements (or more?) the total price will be quite high. Really got to think about it the next few days.
@@JessicaKeldark I did a recolor on Mountain Fortress and added interior details and I am super glad I kept my copy instead of reselling it. I like the idea and aesthetic, but there isn't really much going on? Like, it would've been cool if there were hidden compartments and areas with treasures to find
@@Nphen Yes, that is exactly what we can do. But we are giving critique to this set and the most important part that nearly everyone mentions is that it is a very well built building, with lots of detail .. but it is basically empty and lifeless. For a set this expensive, needing more to bring it to life is not exactly ideal.
IMO the biggest problem is the ground. It looks odd floating on gray plates - it needed green plates to make it feel like it was actually on the ground, and it would tie into the other vegetation. The scale also feels very off. The roof in the middle feels hugely oversized, especially in scale to the tower, which almost reads like a chimney in a house built for giants... it's a headscratcher
Now that part is true and probably it's biggest asset. It is a blank canvas where you can add a ton and make it look quite cool. On it's own, I think it is lacking a lot, but you saw in the video that even just a few minifigures can add a lot of life to it.
Yeah the architecture is wonky as heck. It's like they were going for the South East Asia temple look then randomly slapped in a roof from North West Europe. I don't like the set for that reason. Also the price, of course.
I definitely want this set. Loved how you used Star Wars, Indy, D&D, and Lord of the Rings for the set. Great ideas that work. I plan to use it with Chima figures. And I can have it be an ancient fortress for this anthropomorphic society.
Love the comparisons and bringing in the various minifigs etc. This and the forestman are top of my list, will get them both.. maybe the others too, but these are my favs
Thanks for your review. You helped me make up my mind and I will be getting this set :) it truly is beautiful and I like what you said how it’s a detailed canvas I can add to how I want
Really good review! Love the fact you brought in different mini figures that showed what this set could look like and how much colour they add. As you mentioned this is a blank canvas.
I love the design for the looks of the model it is beautiful! But totally lame in every other area. Interior is lame, figs lame, no real play features, nothing unique because of BL. It’s really cool when you put all the other figures from themes in there but then you are paying a very hefty extra fee where you could just get smthn better. Still tempting as a display piece but really a let down
Made me go from "maybe" on this to "order 2 of them and tell my local BAM" in hopes it makes the threshold. You showed why no need for minifigs; this is a bring-your-own theme set. I already have the D&D set & figs and other Castle builds. This will go in the same forest as my Forestmen Tree House & Forest Stronghold. Should look amazing with proper landscaping. To critics: yes, there is hidden treasure in this set, and there are easy places to MOC your own treasure into. There are over 100 *more* parts than Forest Stronghold for $10 less. We should all have enough minis to populate this!
I wasn't considering this set, but I changed my mind after seeing the Review, although I do agree it lacks some playability. Traps and some kind of devices would be neat to see here
Hi, As soon as I saw this set, I thought the same thing as you. We will have the opportunity to accompany it with many themes but I, I chose to buy it to... enlarge Rivendell. I would change the colors of the trees and the texture of the roofs to match the Rivendell set but I will pair them to redo
It feels too empty. I was originally hoping this would win to pick it up day 1, but I found myself skipping it since it feels hollow. "Hollow" is a perfect word for it. I would have loved to see an undead, ancient king and hidden treasure behind a series of traps to give it story potential. Instead of this set and the not-Forestman Boring Stronghold, I bought The Art of Chocolate since that's essentially a me-set and it's very nice and unique. You don't see many chocolatier anything, anywhere. And the designer did a wonderful job not just with the Lego detail, but with their Canva-created graphics.
While I much appreciate the stuff you did with it, using all kinds of minifigures and themes to fill the place up, I think the set should stand on his own and already be worth it. It definitely looks quite special, but there is very little substance to it, very little play function or hidden detail. Basically there isn't anything but a ruined building with walls, some water and a lot of plants. It is absolutely a display set, not a play set and it is awfully empty for a display set at that. At least with a set like Rivendell or LKC, there is incredibly much to see, a ton of color and detail .. it feels alive and vibrant. For sure this set has an absolute ton of useful pieces, tons of useful grey for your own buildings, a few other tones to add to that and a ton of greenery that will help any custom MOC. But paying close to $300 for a parts package is just too much. If you buy this, it should be to display the Lost City set itself and maybe use it in a way similar to what is shown in the video. I can't help but feel a litle let down by this, or any of the current BDP sets. The only set I am seriously considering is the Caravan, as it is reasonably priced and still looks like a good quality display piece. I'm afraid it will sell out extremely quickly, as the incredibly low supply for these sets is still an issue that they are unwilling to step away from. This is certainly not worth it's price and I don't think it will sell out completely.
I can't wait to get this one. I'm buying this set solely for my old islander figures. I'm putting that nice Achu figure right up at the top of the stairs. 😁
I'd kinda like this set to display the Wild era Link and Zelda since I wanted to do the OOT Deku Tree...but seeing it in 'action' just feels a bit like its too much for the price. might still look to build it with the instructions and a few bulk piece buys instead at some point though. It still looks good, but it doesn't really feel like it justifies the price compared to something more exciting like Art of Chocolate or the Harbormaster Office. Thank you for the review.
For real. The whole series seems way too expensive. For example the caravan is basically a 30€ set (and even then quite expensive) but somehow they priced it at 50€. Same with the other sets: Harbourmaster house feels like half the size of a modular buidling, chocolate house has tiny rooms in which some a minifigure barely can stand etc. Not saying that some of the sets dont look nice, but they are all way too expensive. I will pass completely on this series, I hope the prices for series 5 will get better as I really like some sets there
It is certainly expensive. I don't know where all the budget went, but it doesn't feel like enough value is in it. Maybe it is because you get a ton of the same few colorshades and not much else.
