This should have been priced at 300 at most. Here is the thing. A lot of these really big expensive sets get a 50 euro discount at some point. This tells me that Lego knows the sets are overpriced. So if you look at the price without the 50 euro discount, then you end up with 310 euro. 310 euro is somewhat acceptable, but it should have been without stickers at that point. This set just isn't worth it, but it won't stop people from not being able to resist the fomo and buy the set anyways.
It'll stop me. I have a long history with D&D and love Lego--more accurately, I love building-brick sets since I'm in no way a Lego purist or fanboy and buy the other brands' products frequently--but Lego's pricing is so out of line most of the time that I buy little from them at this point, sadly. I'm not impressed with this set and don't think D&D benefits from the Lego "kiddifying" treatment.
A reason you could justify the price is the fact that this set isn't just a Lego set. It's a full-on D&D one-shot campaign. For those who want to play the campaign as players, this review spoils a lot of the plot details without realizing it (and it's perfectly fine, you said yourself that you are reviewing the set as a Lego product not a D&D one). A mention could've been nice tho. Also the price per piece ratio is a lot better than many other IP'ed Lego set. Anyway, that's my two cents! Great review!
Yeah I haven't seen a lot of people mention it comes with a $20 module for free. I feel like lego should've played it up as being a nexus of dnd and lego instead of sidelining the dnd elements
I have played D&D for years, and I was so excited to year about the collaboration with LEGO. I want this set. My friends who I play D&D with will love it, as would my wife. $360 is a stretch and I'll probably use up my Insiders points to get it.
I thought it was a lot too, but then I put it in perspective of how much money I’ve spent on all my other DnD stuff and you know what… it’s not to bad 😅
I AM a big D&D fan, have been one for decades and I thank you for your review and lego-based opinion. I was already thinking it too expensive (more for Mexico, here it's priced at 546 usd). I don't think I"ll buy it, even though I already own 3 colosal dragons and 1 Tiamat. This is too scavenger.
I think the set is just a big let down from the original design. Instead of a more unique, larger, and detailed dark green dragon that wraps his body around the tower, there's just the most generic, bright red, four legged dragon that can only wrap his tail partly around it. The tower itself looks worse and doesn't blend into the terrain as well, the bridge to the side tower became as basic as humanly possible instead of being uniquely shaped. The Inn's roof is a more cartoony color, and the Inn itself is shrunken down and loses most of it's detail and visual appeal from the outside, looking more like a tall shack now than an Inn. The cave underneath the tower has most of the rockwork around the side completely gone and made more bare-bones, not even resembling a cave well anymore. Even something as simple as the beholder is made into a goofier design, with a pastel purple color that makes him look like he spent too much time in the sun, rather than the deeper purple. And then it's $360. I would've gladly paid $400 for a larger version more like the original, but all these factors make me not even sure if I'll get the set anymore.
You mentioned the IP, and it's worth noting that D&D's IP is EXPENSIVE, especially after 5th edition's phenomenal success and Baldur's Gate 3's success. My guess is at least 50-60$ for the set is just for the use of the IP, which is A LOT.
I appreciate that they brick-built the dragon. Though this would be a great time to introduce a tighter higher strength mixel joint like we have with the CCBS, I'd love those for building more dense models.
I enjoyed the review but i would have greatly appreciated if you actually went more into details into those easter eggs. I don’t know about D&D either but i was greatly intrigued. It just didn’t come off so great saying so many times “i don’t know what this is but you can figure it out”. Anyways thank you for the input. Very interesting to see the set
this set seems so insanely fun that it might be oversold through a lot of weeks. It will be huge success as DnD fanbase is like got to audience of lego + modularity + role play with figs. It all add up and considering other buildings from lego in fantasy style are already there and wating for whole fantasy set up to be made for Dnd players. Not mentioning plenty of Dnd upcoming in next bricklink designer auctions.
Awesome you can make your own mimic chest.......i had one, but unfortunately had to trash it because i was moving. I don't think I'll be able to buy another one because it took up too much space and i prefer to travel/ live light. I have a few games and books, and that's about it otherwise i have no need for it.
As a huge dnd fan, I believe there were small nods to things like magic items (the cloak on the skeleton, the green dagger, the book- to name a few), and all these things weren’t just put there to be Easter eggs- I think they were put there because they believe people may actually want to use this set as terrain/ set piece to an actual dnd session! While it may be a little cramped, you could definitely use this set as a map for PCs to explore- and there’s definitely a story that dungeon masters could piece together. However, while I think they placed more value in the set for dnd fans, seeing it next to other fantasy/ medieval sets I still don’t believe its price tag is worth it! Awesome review, the set is GORGEOUS, especially all the small details (my favourite is the missing cat poster in the tavern)
@Lux-rg4wv It's all personal opinion, and I'm just giving my perspective. For instance, I'd rather spend $500 buying multiple dinosaur 3 in 1 sets instead of one Rivendell.
@@MrMcSnuffyFluffy It is and it is not. I got you and that's the beauty - everybody can find their piece of cake in the lego world :) But it's like in football, anybody can play, anybody can support their favorite team, but there is no doubt Messi and C. Ronaldo are the two best players, unquestionably. Same here with LKC and Rivendell. They are milestones in terms of design and technical pioniers, instant staples in history of Lego. Opinion shared both by fans and experts.
I like fantasy games / books ect and I like medieval builds so when I saw this, I really wanted to get this but price was very steep. But I got good black Friday deal and got this set for 260€ which is much reasonable price tag than 360€. Now I'm waiting it to arrive 🙂
DnD set introduced 1974 contains the "Monster & Treasure" guide: There are six varieties of Dragons, each with separate characteristics in particular and other things in common. Green (gas), Red (fire), White (cold), Black (acid), Blue (light), and Gold (fire or gas).
I love the Red since it's D&D, but i think it was a cost saving measure on LEGO so they wouldn't have to mold dark green in so many curved shapes that don't already exist.
Yeah, the original green dragon of the fan contest submission looks cool but it's not really a D&D chromatic green dragon. It's an homage to the classic Lego Castle and Kingdom theme green dragon mold with the red wings and yellow underbelly, and didn't really look like a D&D chromatic green dragon (which has more fins running along its head and back). Agreed that the red dragon is much more iconic for D&D and representative of their brand though.
As a castle and somewhat of a DND fan this is a must buy. But be smart about it. Wait for a 2x point day for your big purchases. I believe this will be sold at other stores like target, Walmart, kohl’s maybe…and wait for sales. It may take awhile for this to go on sale but worth the wait.
I have not gotten the set at time of writing, but I think it is worth it, for me. I will build the set and display it for sure, but I'll also get to play the adventure with my group, which makes it so worth it in my mind.
My favorite part of the set tour was how he fumbled through the D&D parts 😅. I just got it for xmas and yes, as a D&D player I love it and it's worth it for sure but I guess that's bc I'm planning on using LEGO to run D&D instead of minis (I primarily focus on digital) so for me the other castle sets are amazing and relatively cheaper!
I really enjoyed your review of the D&D set, but I humbly disagree with the pricing critique. While $360 might seem high, I believe sets like this one, with its incredible level of detail and narrative potential, deserve a bit more appreciation. For instance, comparing it to the AT-AT, which is a huge vehicle with a relatively simple interior, the D&D set offers far more in terms of storytelling and hidden surprises. Every step in the build felt like uncovering part of a bigger adventure, much like with the Rivendell set, but even more interactive in some ways. I also want to mention that, unfortunately, we don’t get the same experience here in Brazil. Not only do we pay a significantly higher price (about $643.08 or BRL 3600), but we also miss out on bonuses like "The Red Dragon’s Tale" magazine and the mimic gift, which weren’t released here. We just get the box, and that’s it. I know pricing issues in Brazil don’t matter much to people abroad, but I just wanted to point out how lucky you are to enjoy sets without such barriers.
Insane, cool and awesome looking set, I’m not a D&D fan by any means but I do love this 👌🏼Will I be getting it, probably not at the price point here in Oz, would love too but the thing with Lego in Australia it’s just so expensive 😢
that displaced beast is recognisable as such from a distance but man is it fugly. would be cool if they came out with a larger more detailed one in the future. i would probably buy that. its honestly one of my favorite monsters in D&D also gelatenous cubes (my other favorite monster) are basically 10x10x10 foot basically invisible cubes of living but uninteligent acidic ooze that wanders the halls of dungeons consuming organic mater. mad wizards and the like will sometimes keep several around to keep their dunegons clean and to gather any magical trinkets that fallen adventurers may have had on them. TL:DR gelatinous cubes are massive and hard to spot dungeon Roombas.
Prices are still holding (at least at B&M retail stores) - I think that even around the $310 ($10 for just about every set over $60 these days) it would be a buy for people who are in to both D&D and Lego. I haven't played in many years but my daughter does and I still have a few different editions of the manuals. Again, at $300 it would be on my list just not at the top. at $360 it moves down several positions on my list.
I think one other thing to mention is that when comparing to those other sets it may look smaller due to the dragon. But I still agree that 360$ is crazy.
I've been playing D&D all my life and it's a huge part of my social circle. I agree with you, it's too expensive. Essepilly considering D&D's eventual price points.
I mean you're already spending 300 what's another 60, and you also get a D&D campaign with the set, so if you want to play that specifically designed campaign I think it makes up for the extra cost
@@julienholef6026 Good for you, but this means nothing for people who buy it today, as the mimic is gone. By the way, you only got the book because you already had enough points - does not matter for anyone buying just this set. As I've said, it should all be in this one set.
Damn... I was thinking about getting two and expinding them together, but now I'm not sure if I'll even get one. It's great set, don't get me wrong, and there is a lot of amazing things in it.... But that price when compared to other big sets next to it... Damn
I know I’m late, but i honestly think this could’ve easily been split into 3 sets, the tavern, the dragon, and a castle/fortress with the beholder. It would’ve been great to have an “encounter” per set, especially to make things more affordable to kids since they are getting into d&d more, thanks to media like Stranger Things, and especially the young adventurer books that they’ve semi-recently released.
Within D&D there are different dragons Red being the worst/most deadly, if not Tiamat, so it's on par imo. The ability to separate the dragon from the tower unlike the fan sub is much better. Luckily, I just picked up this set at my work place, we got the exclusive aside from Lego and it was roughly £220 with my discount, I felt that it's a fair price.
Its just SUCH an aggressive asking price for people to buy into the theme. Why not do a wave of 5 or so mid-range priced LEGO sets. I would have LOVED to buy individual sets to give out to my D&D group. I would have arguably spent MORE had that been an option. If it wasnt a GWP I would be buying a BUNCH of those mimics for everyone to store their dice/minis!
Just realized that skeleton fancy cap doesnt belong to that skeleton, meaning its probably intended for you to kill the skeleton and nab the most definitely magical cape after :D same w the skeleton helm and probably the rest of the stuff scattered everywhere. That idea just brings about a different area to be creative at, simple and overused elements can now have stat blocks that makes it more appealing. People probably already have done that before, but wotc and lego tying it together officially is just magical. Still not gonna be able to afford this, but just my thoughts. The prison could also hold a kindnapped player who needs to spend turns trying to get out :D
As a custom builder, I am very particular about what sets I buy these days. Even though I am a huge castle fan. This set does not have enough value for the price.
Yes it’s a franchise and it costs more because WOTC et al must get their cut…the set is cool and should retail for about $60-80 less. Very cool though!
If they ever do a Warcraft thing from when it was at it's peak they won't even have a enough plastic to supply. Because quite a few of those 2005 kids are at their peek in their career now. This makes me dream about mocks of legendary events in that world. Ragnaros fight or whatever. Like a diorama in the form of the recent Indiana Jones diorama.
Thank you for your honesty on a given review set! I feel like i would love the build and dragon, but since it will be mainly a display set, i agree with you on price. Lego should have budgeted the designers at 250-300 dollars, get the build in, scale the dragon down 20% and reduce it's parts usage, and then fill in the builds external details up to the budget point. All the internal details and easter eggs are great during building, but after that they are memories and lost to all other beholders except the builder. I rather have a cool set for a cool price with less detail, then paying ridiculous much for an overdetailed cool set. Which in this case i have degraded off my must-have list to my fun-to-have list. MIght be that i am from the 80's where Lego did not detail much at all and i learned to love the freedom to create or even just play within the structures Lego thaught us to build.
I think your absolutely correct! I am a dnd fan but 360$ seems a little much. I guess I can always hope they make smaller more affordable sets in the future.
Anyone else relies that he added a piece mid-review? It is on the ruined tower on some shots you can see the full small roof, and on others it is missing a dark green cheese slope.
I am happy to see it's not just me that dislikes the price. Love the set though. Everything is perfection. I don't think I would change anything in this - maybe the inn sign could have been a print, but the other stickers are really fair given their narrow use. Must buy for me, but will wait for a discount.
I am really surprised how playing Baldurs Gate 3 made me notice all these different little things in this set. But yeah if I had 360$ to drop on a LEGO set now I would pick something else. This seems great to get when on sale maybe dunno

I have played D&D for years, and I was so excited to year about the collaboration with LEGO. I want this set. My friends who I play D&D with will love it, as would my wife. $360 is a stretch and I'll probably use up my Insiders points to get it.
I thought it was a lot too, but then I put it in perspective of how much money I’ve spent on all my other DnD stuff and you know what… it’s not to bad 😅
also i agree, the price shoulda been 299
..with prints only.
How on earth did you get this already
My exact reaction
I believe he’s part of a Lego program which means they send him stuff for free so he can review it
Lego sends out sets early for review. Some other Lego TH-camrs got them too!
He's in the LAN
The lego ambassador program i presume?
Congrats ! 600‘000 Subscriber ! Amazing ! 🎉🎉👍👍
Awesome set, very expensive perhaps a little too expensive but I'll definitely be picking it up at some point.
Congrats on 600K!!!!!!
Great looking set, but yes expensive! Will be further down in our “wish” list but overall it’s looks like a great build! 😊
Considering how much Wizards of the Coast charge for paper and cardboard... This price really comes as no surprise based on that license.
This looks epic I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get it but now I’m def gonna get it
Omg I love the Sauron sticker 😂
Love the content and ure fast uploads, congrats for 600k,1million loading👍
wspanialy model , gratulacje dla LEGO ,dzieki za prezentacje👍
the dragon head mold isnt new but the paint style is
D&D?! Let’s freakin go!!!
You mentioned the IP, and it's worth noting that D&D's IP is EXPENSIVE, especially after 5th edition's phenomenal success and Baldur's Gate 3's success. My guess is at least 50-60$ for the set is just for the use of the IP, which is A LOT.
Honestly, I just want only the dragon more than the set. It looks so cool!
Lego, please make ball joints and hinges in other colors than grey! Please
“Don’t care how I want it now!”
this set seems so insanely fun that it might be oversold through a lot of weeks.
I just won a contest and I’m getting this set with the medieval town square so for free, I’m so excited!
This DandD set looks fantastic love the dragon and minifigs looks awesome great review
As a non dnd player, I think I'd still buy this before the Lion Knights Castle.
Noooooooo way. Lion Knights Castle and Rivendell are the best sets ever released. This is not even in the top 20.
No.
Personal opinion of course, but this doesn't even come close to how well designed LKC is.
@Lux-rg4wv It's all personal opinion, and I'm just giving my perspective. For instance, I'd rather spend $500 buying multiple dinosaur 3 in 1 sets instead of one Rivendell.
@@MrMcSnuffyFluffy It is and it is not. I got you and that's the beauty - everybody can find their piece of cake in the lego world :)
But it's like in football, anybody can play, anybody can support their favorite team, but there is no doubt Messi and C. Ronaldo are the two best players, unquestionably.
Same here with LKC and Rivendell. They are milestones in terms of design and technical pioniers, instant staples in history of Lego. Opinion shared both by fans and experts.
This was a great review. I love the set and it was great comparing it to other sets to see where it fits in.
This set is awesome and I love the customizable characters but I don't see $360 for this. Rivendell gives so much more value for only $140 more.
I like fantasy games / books ect and I like medieval builds so when I saw this, I really wanted to get this but price was very steep. But I got good black Friday deal and got this set for 260€ which is much reasonable price tag than 360€. Now I'm waiting it to arrive 🙂
1:17 I agree the Red dragon is more D&D while green is more Lego.
D&D has a whole range of chromatic and Metallic Dragons, it could have worked
DnD set introduced 1974 contains the "Monster & Treasure" guide: There are six varieties of Dragons, each with separate characteristics
in particular and other things in common. Green (gas), Red (fire), White (cold), Black (acid), Blue (light), and Gold (fire or gas).
There are so many more dragons in DnD now. Even gem dragons. But the red one still is the most infamous.
Food is a must buy
I was going to pick it up at release, but seeing the comparison to other sets think I’ll wait till it’s on sale
I have not gotten the set at time of writing, but I think it is worth it, for me. I will build the set and display it for sure, but I'll also get to play the adventure with my group, which makes it so worth it in my mind.
Congrats on 600k subs, it's deserved. Been watching the channel since the Kashyyyk days. 1 mil is on the way, keep up the good work.
You have a point about the lionitss castle set, it really cant be justified how expensive this one it
My favorite part of the set tour was how he fumbled through the D&D parts 😅. I just got it for xmas and yes, as a D&D player I love it and it's worth it for sure but I guess that's bc I'm planning on using LEGO to run D&D instead of minis (I primarily focus on digital) so for me the other castle sets are amazing and relatively cheaper!
That...was fast hahaha
Would be weird if those were Alex Jadescale's parents at 12:10, when neither of them have jade coloured scales haha
Every single review I’ve seen nobody has purchased the set themselves
that displaced beast is recognisable as such from a distance but man is it fugly. would be cool if they came out with a larger more detailed one in the future. i would probably buy that. its honestly one of my favorite monsters in D&D
also gelatenous cubes (my other favorite monster) are basically 10x10x10 foot basically invisible cubes of living but uninteligent acidic ooze that wanders the halls of dungeons consuming organic mater. mad wizards and the like will sometimes keep several around to keep their dunegons clean and to gather any magical trinkets that fallen adventurers may have had on them.
TL:DR gelatinous cubes are massive and hard to spot dungeon Roombas.
Would they dissolve bones? I'm just wondering if the skull inside the one in this set is accurate or not
@@prons_gaming5083 they take a long time to digest organic mater. the bones would remain for quite some time.
Fair play to LEGO for ensuring the dragon has 4 legs, as dragons should, and not making it a wyvern with only 2 legs
I think one other thing to mention is that when comparing to those other sets it may look smaller due to the dragon. But I still agree that 360$ is crazy.
Great review
ok that dragon and owlbear (stupid idea tbh) look epic. They should paint something on the wings, they are to plain (no dmg, no dirt, no nothing).
If everything was in the set (including the book and the mimic) and everything was printed, maybe then it'ld be worth 360 bucks..
I got the book AND the Mimic AND a flower set for 360. Seems fair.
I must say... it's a talent how the LEGO designers can turn an adult collectable set into a kid's playset...
Those other sets didn’t have a giant Dragon and sweet beholder. The level of detail and playability is insane.
Do you still hang out with Javier? Just remember him from some old videos of yours!
Glad to see I'm not the only one surprised but the price. this was going to be a day one buy for me but now I think I am going to pass on it.
As a custom builder, I am very particular about what sets I buy these days. Even though I am a huge castle fan. This set does not have enough value for the price.
I think it’s awesome! Yes the price is messed up, but I do plan on buying it for my 10th anniversary for my bone marrow transplant cause I love DnD
Yes it’s a franchise and it costs more because WOTC et al must get their cut…the set is cool and should retail for about $60-80 less. Very cool though!
I adore it and if I was irresponsible with my spending and space habits I would be buying it.
Thank you for your review! I love this set; I want this set. Alas, I am poor, and will wait for a discounted price.
