"What really changes the world is not coming up with a new device, but making that device available to everybody. And that's a much harder job often than coming up with the new device in the first place. And yet we often don't recognize that. We don't reward it."

The most important thing about failure is to admit to yourself what you are trying has failed. Many innovators are too proud or to enamored whit there idea to let it go and try something else. A great TV show that demonstrates this in almost every episode is The Profit.

What an extraordinary interview. It's enjoyable watching two intellectuals speak together. I love the look of total enjoyment that I see on Yaron's face as he listens to Matt's ideas. This is obviously an important book; I will not only pre-order it, but will promote it.

I invented a method of making a very specialized membrane about 6 years ago and it worked but was only a side line and not very important. I just got an order for as many as i can make because it is being used in a device that makes disinfectant. My original use had nothing to do with disinfectant but i put it out in the market and someone came up with this machine because my product was available. Last month his machine was just a side line for him and now he has orders for every testing clinic in the US to decontaminate the workers and the equipment.
His machine would allow the clinic to make as much disinfectant as they need on site .

Let's hope you get to keep your profits and continue your production. I see all sorts of calls for "profiteering" to be outlawed.

Very very interesting. Coming up with a new device (invention) is easier than making it available widely in an entrepreneurial way (innovation). It's good to hear a nuanced yet strong defense of Thomas Edison (part inventor, mostly innovator) and other innovators by implication. Coolio.

Thanks for this very good interview. Matt Ridley brings some convincing points, not like when he talks about climate; is this the return of the great Matt Ridley ?

There are some inspiring books about capitalism poking up amidst the statist weeds in primitive economies in Africa, rural China and South America, eg, Stealth Of Nations.

Consider that the money invested into government innovation was taken from private industry, limiting its potential to innovate.
    There's no free lunch.
Furthermore consider that government agencies don't often have incentive structures as powerful as the private investor's economic profit motive.
