Matt Ridley | From Science Journalism to Politics, and the Origin of COVID-19

  • The Origins Podcast will appear every other Thursday. Matt Ridley is a veteran journalist and science writer, with a training in genetics. He is also a Conservative member of the House of Lords in the UK. Matt and Lawrence were able to discuss his training, and his move from scientist to journalist, as well as the spectrum of his experiences in his various roles. We then moved on to the centerpiece of our dialogue: His newest book, Viral, written with geneticist Alina Chan. Together they produced what Lawrence Krauss views to be a masterpiece of science writing and detective work, exploring the origins of Covid-19. Our discussion, like the book, allowed us to illustrate a lot of the science related to the virus, and the current pandemic.

What I don't get about the libertarian argument, that philanthropists would jump in and do all the funding, is, that they could already do that. And I do not want a society where the future depends on the generosity of a super rich elite.
We had that system in the middle ages.

Yup. We can see the craziness of this as Exxon spends millions of dollars fuding ACC disinformation. Exxon scientists knewe that CO2 was causing global warming in 1977 (as did many scientists) and were even preparing for it, while publically denying it. Rich corporations do not care and they manipulate the uneducated with their propaganda. While people die in heat events, low-lying countries are drowning, monsoon seasons are disrupted, and wildfires are more common.

Lawrence, this was a great podcast thank you very much Matt for sharing your work. Lawrence, please fix the lighting issue, it's distracting, apparently if you light from the back it will eliminate the shadowing affect. That was a suggestion during the chat, once again thank you for making this available for all the world.

Classical mechanics was so dull in presentation and assignment oriented in our Physics course that I never got that spark and inspiration in physics while I was I school. It was all block on inclined planes and pulleys.

The problem with learning about black holes and intriguing stuff first and getting through inclined planes is that one gets a sense of knowing without understanding. It might be better to make learning inclined plane physics more fun. I know I was seduced by the glamour of physics and didn't unfortunately put in the real work required.

I teach biology to first year universities and know what you mean, I think. It was only in my 40's, through reading histories of science, that I came to undrstand how marvelous it was that we learned that reality had predictable patterns that conform to arithmetic and geomtry and algebra. It is amazing. The ancient Greeks were the furst to understand this. It was so boring rolling balls down inclined planes in first yr university. I ddnt realize we were learning about empirical reality.

Lawrence, you mentioned early on that you're colorblind. Have you tried enchroma glasses? There are many kinds, for various kinds of colorblindness, and apparently, they work great for many colorblind people. I am neither colorblind, nor associated with any glasses company, so this is only a personal comment.

Ridley: “For us, as amateur detectives…”
Exactly, Chan and Ridley are not virologists and know nothing about viruses. Yet, they wrote a book about the origin of SARS-CoV-2 during a pandemic. Grifters.
Please have an actual virologist on next time. You need to correct this mistake.

You call yourself a scientist, why not apply your skills here even if you are out of your lane.
You are aware your question is the same as religious people ask of your Big Bang theory or the theory of evolution?
It took a long time to even realize there was a new virus spreading and you expect to find the actual animal the spillover happened from.
You reject every scientific study pointing at a spillover. Yet you accept the most outrageous speculations on a lab leak. You sound religious.
Zoonotic spillovers happen all the time. It happened in wet markets before. Guano diggers getting sick from unknown viruses happens regularly.
The burden of proving otherwise is on you.

@@TheOriginsPodcast It seems that Elaniago is a Chinese troll. Being a former virologist myself (with a diploma in virology in zoonotic Hantaviruses and and a postdoc in mouse neuroviruses at highly renowned institutions as well as a PhD in immunology), please believe me, it is not too difficult to understand what had been discussed between two scientists who are not virologists (applicable also to equally bright non-scientists, for that matter). Not only virologists are capable of understanding the furin cleavage site issue, to give only one example albeit an important one, if explained properly, as was the case in the podcast conversation and probably also in the book (still need to read it - I am ordering it now). This conversation was extremely interesting! Thank you very much for making it available!
